No, you should definitely update your Chromium. (You may want to
switch to Chrome to get the automatic updates)

In general, for web browsers it is very important to use the latest
version for security.

And do not be fooled by the fact that GMail still works (until the end of 2017), this is very insecure.
See https://gsuiteupdates.googleblog.com/2017/02/gmail-no-longer-supporting-chrome-v53.html. Chrome and Chromium are interchangeable in this regard.

FYI, this email thread (chromium-dev) is for browser developers, not a support site. You shouldn't ask user-support questions here. But anyway...

It looks like Ubuntu 14.04's Chromium package didn't get updated past 53 (Ubuntu 16.04 is on 55, still not the latest but better).

I'm not sure what their policy is on updates (and I'm aware that we officially dropped support for 32-bit Linux at some point), but unfortunately, this doesn't make it secure. Using Chromium 53 is just as bad as using an outdated Chrome 53, and you need to update to remain safe. You can install the latest Google Chrome on Ubuntu 14.04, or otherwise you have to find a Chromium package that is up to date (perhaps update your Ubuntu).

Note that Chromium means two things: the open source project (which we develop on chromium-dev) and the name of unofficial versions of Chrome that distros like Ubuntu distribute. We are not responsible for the latter; keeping it up to date is the responsibility of Ubuntu, not us. Google only keeps Google Chrome up to date.

Can't you install Chrome from
https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/desktop/index.html ? Assuming
you have a 64-bit system.

Just note that the security of the browser is completely unrelated to a specific website.
(Insecure websites basically just make it easier to steal data that is related to related websites, they do not compromise the browser itself)
Non-latest Chrome and Chromium simply have known security vulnerabilities that can be used to exploit it and get through to your system and using operating system level exploits, even gain completely control of your system.

The (constantly) latest Chrome defends the user from known (to Google, anyway) security vulnerabilities and makes it much harder for bad code to reach a stage where it can exploit the operating system level security vulnerabilities.

I have the same message on my gmail ('This version of Chrome...') but have never used Chromium. I also infrequently get logged out of my account - any insight as to why that's the case?

Thanks,

Eugene

Just keep your Chrome up to date. We can't provide any support if you are using a version of Chrome that's older than the current stable (at the time of writing, version 58).

Click the three dots icon on the top-right -> Help -> About Google Chrome. That will tell you the version and if it's too old, provide an update button.

To answer this old question from February:
I suppose you can't really be sure if a link telling you to update your browser is legitimate or if it's malware. Don't click links in web pages to update your browser. If Gmail is telling you Chrome is out of date, just follow the steps I mention above to update Chrome (i.e., update it through the browser menus itself, not through a web page).

thx,

Steve

I get the chrome wrong version error but there is something else going on.  I uninstall, reboot and reinstall.  However, whatever icon I use to launch chrome, I actually load chromium.  I find no directories for chromium and it is not an option to unistall.  Anyone have any ideas?

Thank you

The Chromium binaries that the Chromium project makes available online (for testing only) do not update, install or launch automatically.
You are probably infected with some malware that use some customized Chromium binaries as one of its malicious mechanisms. :(
See this thread for at least removing that rogue Chromium -
