Why is compiling WebKit so slow?

This may be an odd question. When compiling Chromium on a 32 vCPU GCE instance it zips through the first ~19000 files quickly (with a minor slowdown on V8), but slows down significantly when it gets to WebKit. The counter for those ~3000 files increases only slowly. Thats true for both gcc (Android) and clang (Linux). Is that expected or a bug?

This has been discussed before; if you search for "chromium-dev blink slow bratell" you'll probably find the old thread.

Daniel, did you take another shot at the PCH patch now that we've been on MSVC 2015 for awhile?

I assume this is old news to most here, but I want to mention this was solved through jumbo builds, which accelerates building WebKit significantly. It's really slow without it, in comparison. It has been getting worse since too.
