Chromoting with CentOS host

I'm trying to use Chrome Remote Desktop on a CentOS 8 host.  I installed the package from epel repo, then generate a code from https://remotedesktop.google.com/headless, but trying to run 'start-host' with this code fails with "OAuth error".

I found this bug report from 2 years ago which says the only solution is to use the official binary.  Is that still true, so there is no way to make it work on non-Debian distros? https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=1039016#c5
