Not sure how widespread this failure is, but it appears to be recent, and a few others have seen it:
crbug.com/799419
mv ~/.vpython ~/.vpython.bak seemed to 'fix' it for me.
Looks like there's a real
fix
that should land soon.

You may in fact just remove .vpython dir, and i'm kicking rolls to deploy the fix where necessary.

This will affect developers who have their checkout somewhere under ~. It's a latent bug in vpython that was revealed by
https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/tools/depot_tools/+/1adc91f99fe0aa7675dac6a44f2f320be3ea036f
. The fixed version of vpython was landed in
https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/tools/depot_tools/+/df27bf6f0034ac718433f8c745f9229514aca960
~/.vpython is, indeed, safe to delete. The current version of vpython puts its stuff in ~/.vpython-root
This should be resolved for everyone; please comment on the bug (
crbug.com/799419
) if it's still not working.
Sorry about that,
Robbie I
