Hello Fellow Developers!

This email is a PSA on Chrome support for Android Nougat OS.

What?

  • Support for Android Nougat (up to and including API level 25) in the Chromium code base is deprecated.

Why?

  • Nougat OS was last updated in 2019.

  • We value our users and want to keep them safe on the web, but maintaining Chrome on operating systems that are no longer supported reduces our ability to move the rest of Chrome forward. As other apps have done, we have decided to deprecate Nougat now that 7 years have passed since its initial release.

When?

  • Chrome M119 is the last release that will support Android Nougat. M120 will not be shipped to Nougat.

  • M120 is the first release which sets the minimum Android SDK version to Android Oreo (API level 26). M120 will roll out to Chrome stable channel December 2023.

Next Steps

  • We can now start cleanup since M120 has branched.

  • Meta cleanup tracking bug: crbug.com/1497004

  • For things you know you want to clean up, you can file bugs blocking the meta bug, or use the meta-bug directly for smaller efforts.

  • For questions or concerns, please reach out on this mail-thread.

Hi folks,

We are glad to share the news that Android Nougat has been deprecated on Chromium CQ since early October, and replaced by the following trybots:

And the minimum Android SDK version has been bumped to Oreo (API 26) on the main branch.

Also, we have completed the migration for the following CI builders.

Next steps will include:

  • Set up new GPU CI builders on Android Pie.

We expect cleanup to start in earnest. For details, please check all the open tickets in the "BlockedOn" field of the meta bug.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to reply to this email or create blocking bugs.

Thanks,

The Chrome team at Google.
