New issue 46852 by s...@chromium.org: Remove phantom tabs
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=46852

After living with phantom tabs we've decided that while we love pinned
tabs, we still want to close pinned tabs like normal tabs and not have them
go phantom.

Ok,please tell me phantom tabs will be added back in another way? Maybe
right click options for adding a single tab as phantom or tabs to the left
or right? Also having the phantom tabs persist on browser restarts would be
great(the tabs reload into memory after restarts currently). The phantom
tabs are key to my daily browsing as chromium gets memory hungry with all
those extra tabs. If this isnt going to be readded into chromium at some
point(seriously, why wouldnt it be,google phantom tabs and youll see alot of
people like this feature),is the extension api sufficient enough to make a
phantom tab extension? Sorry to have droned on and on,and thanks in advance
for your response.

I know.Still, there are alot of people with laptops that dont want to deal
with that high memory usage,so i wish they can reconsider putting this back
in. I do have a more powerful desktop but i still like my apps to be mean
and clean as far as ram usage, and that also allows much more multitasking
with other programs as well. Sad,i just hope it will be brought back

Yes, please bring them back! It's THE feature I love on chrome. I can't
even use pinned tabs anymore b/c all of the pages will be loaded into
memory now.

What about just adding a right click option to "close & keep" ? Set the
default to close completely, but allow the people that use them to keep
this awesome feature.

Maybe you guys could add a switch to enable phantom tabs. That way the
people who want them to close can close them, and the people who want to
make them phantom tabs can add the switch and it will be the same as it
used to be.

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=46852

I found phantom tabs to be a really nice feature.
Not because of the memory issues, but because I always had my favorite apps
right were I expected them to be, even if I quickly ctrl+w them, which is
my favorite way to get rid of the app I am not using any more. (I had to
pin my gmail and calendar for a countless times in the last few days!)
It also makes sense that if someone spent the time to "pin" a tab, which is
considered a power user feature, he can spend two more clicks to "unpin"
them.

+1 for bringing them back.

I'm actually going to weigh in on this one and piggy back off gvg.fede
(#11).

For me, I'm at an internship most of the day, but I get to use my own
machine. I don't want to have my personal email, etc., up, but I also
don't want to change my pinned tabs <i>every</i> time I come and go from
work.

Please bring back ghost/phantom tabs. These were incredibly useful for
sites you are going to get to that have flash video, so you don't have to
have it playing in the background. How about a right click menu, or a
special option.

Also, if you bring back ghost tabs, it would be great if tabs remained
ghosts even after closing/reopening the browser.

Comment #19 on issue 46852 by Hunnter: Remove phantom tabs
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=46852

Please add this back in, this is such an incredibly useful feature on lower
end machines like netbooks, and more so for whenever you finally launch
Chrome OS hardware.
Ideally i would love for it to be in options, or at least exposed through a
command that allows extensions to switch it on and off for a tab, this way
we can have timer extensions to terminate tabs after set periods of
inactivity and similar things like that. (or terminate tabs running
plugins, etc.)

There is no reason not to have this in Chromium. Why was it removed in the
first place?
Surely it shouldn't be causing much problems to actually require removal?
If so, it isn't being done correctly, IMO. (tab management, that is)

"Phantom tabs" is a extremely good idea and nice feature, plz add it back.
It can save a lot of keyboard and mouse clicks while accessing frequently
used websites, such as social platforms or web mails.

I personally "phantom" a pinned tab when I want to free some resources,
meanwhile keep the tab on the tab bar until my next visit. Phantom tabs
works for me as much quicker bookmarks. Very useful, very convenient, and
it'll be nice to have phantom tabs as a chrome-specific feature.

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=46852

sky,

I've been watching this issue and have wanted phantom tabs back ever since
they left. I didn't comment, because I wanted to be sure I wasn't going to
change my mind once I got used to pinned tabs closing. I definitely still
agree with everyone who's been posting here.

If pinned tabs don't stick around after closing them, what's the point of
pinned tabs? Giving more space to the titles of unpinned tabs? Seems like a
marginal benefit. Even its name "pinned" suggests that it should be stuck
there. Phantom tabs are what make pinned tabs useful, in my eyes.

I'd be happy to work with the chromium team on writing a patch to support
both methods of closing pinned tabs. My suggestion would be to have Close
Tab turn a pinned tab into a phantom tab like pinned tabs used to act, and
add a new menu item Close and Unpin Tab with its own shortcut keys. This
way we solve the original problem of the tedium of closing pinned tabs, and
keep the functionality that everyone loves.

What do you all think?

It's very easy to change the way pinned tabs behave, there's a flag in
defaults.cc, but it's a pain to set up your workspace.

@Nibus, I think it would make more sense to have an option in the settings
panel to chose how pinned tabs behave, rather than cluttering up the
right-click menu.

I vote for an option that says:

Closing pin tabs:
- close the tab
OR
- make it phantom
Closing being the default option.

+ It would be nice to consider keeping phantom tabs phantom when reopening
browser so that we don't have to quickly close all pinned tabs we want to
phantomize before it loads for nothing

I usaly use the phantom tabs as, "tabs i like to save to later use",
or "tabs I don't want to have open right now and want to have easy access
to..."

And it's very, very annoying that Pinned tabs dissapears when I close them!
A pinned tab is important, it's pinned becouse I love a bit more. And then
It just dies :(

The removal of this function brings up a couple of issues - not least of
which is the removal of very good functionality.

This highlights the problem of a piece of a software that automatically
updates itself - great for security, but can make user experience very bad.

I think that once a feature has made it past beta then it should not be
removed from production - perhaps this will make experimenters more careful
and mean that experimental features remain in beta for longer.

If you are going to remove a feature then you should give users some notice
- perhaps a page telling them what is new when an update happens, and that
some features will be removed in the near future - and giving them a place
to comment or look at other options.

For every google service I use I normally get a prompt about what is new
changed etc - this just doesn't happen with Chrome and needs to be
addressed.

Is there a bug (or maybe earlier posts in this one that I can't see?) that
actually explains the reasoning behind the removal of this feature? The
change seems similar to the removal of tabs-on-top from Safari 4: a
bewildering sacrifice of a standout feature that probably brought in many
user converts in the first place, for the sake of not being confusing.

The behavior of pinned tabs was made more consistent in sensible ways
(reordering within the pinned group was not possible before if I remember
right), but I don't see how this particular change actually clarifies
usage. Create tab and pin takes the same number of actions as close and
unpin.

Certainly the minor simplification is not worth the loss of both conceptual
(use in place of Fluid/app shortcuts) and performance (particularly with
still-memory leaking flash) benefits.

The other polarizing

Well I'm pissed off about this... Chromium could easily add a new right
click option a tab to turn it to phantom tab without affecting anything
else. I just HATE it when companies introduce new and original features
only to just strip them away after a few versions. It SUCKS!

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=46852

Just wanted to weigh in as one of the recent converts parkan speaks of.
This was definitely one of the top reasons I switched to Chrome for all day
use. I, like most people I'm sure, use a lot of web apps every day but not
ALL day. Phantom tabs made Chrome the best browser for this, allowing me to
get into the app with one click any time.

I never found them confusing. In fact, the behavior is entirely consistent
with both the OSX dock and the Windows 7 taskbar, allowing a single click
in the same spot to "launch" an application. Even if this were an option,
either globally for all pinned tabs or on a per-pinned-tab basis, that
would be infinitely better than just removing the feature altogether.

I fully agree. Completely harmonious with the behaviour of OS X's dock and
Windows 7's so-called Superbar (do they still call the taskbar that?). In
fact, this paradigm is so good it completely pushes bookmark bars into
obsolescence. I'd say it would make more sense to rip that one out than
Phantom Tabs.

Comment #55 on issue 46852 by Daniel.W...@gmail.com: Remove phantom tabs
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=46852

@mr.8b

To be candid, I'm rather put out about your two comments.

#53. It sounds to me like you think Sky, who I believe is the, or at least
one of the, Chromium devs responsible for initiating phantom tabs, marked
phantom tabs as a bug, in order to get rid of the feature . . . My
interpretation is that the Chromium devs simply decided the feature fails
to make sense as a built-in option, and so I'm very unconcerned that this
issue is labeled "bug." Finally, I'm disturbed at how you switched to all
caps, condemning anyone who's starred this issue.

Which brings me to comment #54.

#54. I get the sense you believe anyone who starred "this loser's pit" must
want to abolish phantom tabs. I personally starred the issue for two
reasons: a. to show my interest in it and b. to receive (relevant)
notifications about it.

I give you credit for establishing one solid reason to maintain phantom
tabs. On the other hand, I'm upset with how your comment then digressed
into shouting and was surprised to see you call phantom tabs your "way of
life." I therefore visited Issue 49523 and, applauding what I consider a
thorough monologue, now concede phantom tabs well may be your way of life.

At the end of the day, I'm concerned that you apparently feel the need to
go through phantom tab issues, shouting "Shame! Shame!" and labeling
people "scums" because (you think) they disagree with you. I'm frankly
less than thrilled when I get one million "+1" comments in my inbox, yet I
often find them at least tangentially relevant. In fact, I imagine many of
us have various issues we'd like to +1 and see go our way (in Chrome and in
life). To that end, I feel the code community benefits when we present
on-point, respectful, and logical arguments to advance our views. On the
other hand, I'm deeply concerned about how harmful comments like #53 and
#54 could be on a larger scale.

In conclusion, I invite you to discover new and exciting aspects of life
beyond phantom tabs and am very confident that, in the future, you will
post respectful, issue-centered arguments.

All the best.

#59. Please re-read #55. Also, I'm very uncomfortable with the language
in your opening line. Would you please try to avoid that type of language
in the future? Thanks.

@Sky, I appreciate all you've done on phantom tabs, so please remember
there are people out there who are very grateful for your efforts. To be
candid, I've been pondering something like phantom tabs, recently, because
I've been disappointed with the performance on my Cr-48, and I assume at
least a good deal of the results come from the device's hardware specs,
rather than Chrome OS software only.

I get the impression from #59 that phantom tabs are currently available as
an in-line flag command. Is that correct? If so, how can I implement
them? On the other hand, what alternatives do you suggest to help achieve
a similar conservation of system resources?

Thanks again for everything.
