New issue 407902 by w...@chromium.org: widevine cdm not installing on 64-bit
stable 37.0.2062.94 unknown-m
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=407902

Version: 37.0.2062.94 unknown-m (64-bit)
OS: Windows 8.1

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install Chrome x64 M37 stable
2. Go to chrome://components
3. Click on 'update' next to "WidevineCdm"

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Expected: widevinecdm installs and it appears in chrome://plugins
Seen: it says 'Component not updated' and widevine cdm doesn't appear in
chrome://plugins

This only happens on stable (unknown-m) - it works fine on beta (beta-m) on
same version 37.0.2062.94 64-bit, so I'm pretty sure it's to do with issue
407204. Also, other components update fine, so I think it's specific to
widevine.

I manually updated to build 37.0.2062.115 m 64-bit (which has issue 407204
fixed) and the widevine component installs correctly in this build. This
is definitely some interaction between "unknown-m" channel string, and

Actually, for some reason 37.0.2062.115 does contain the unknown-m fix so
the testing performed in #1 is valid, and the bug is fixed.

Aysha.imran79, what version of Chrome are you running? You can find out by
going to chrome://version/ and pasting here what is listed under version
(for example
Google Chrome 38.0.2125.101 (Official Build 290379) beta).

If you are running 37.0.2062.94 or lower, please go to chrome://chrome/ and
Chrome should update, and this should work.

If you are running something newer, we may have to file a new bug.

@bernarda.maia : per your comment, you already have the CDM if it says it's
got version 1.4.6.703. Can you also check chrome://plugins to make sure
that the "Widevine Content Decryption Module" shows up and is NOT disabled?

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=407902

There is an issue with version 1.4.6.703
(at least when Netflix is trying to use it)

My settings: Windows 8.1 x64 Chrome...

When I delete the NEW version and copy the old verion 1.4.5.671 IT WORKS
AGAIN.
Located at: %upserprifile%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\WidevineCDM

The problem I'm still facing - even when I disable Google updates (through
plugins) it still upgrading to 1.4.6.703 so it get screwed up all over
again...

Any suggestions?

installing on 64-bit stable 37.0.2062.94 unknown-m
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=407902

sorry you have had problems with this. There are a few things to check :
1. chrome://components should show "WidevineCDM" as version 1.4.5.671 for
the previous stable release (M37), or 1.4.6.703 for the current stable
release (M38).
--if you see "Component not updated" and you're version is one listed above
(not 0.0.0.0), you've got the most recent update & there's no additional
update.
--if you have 0.0.0.0 && still says "Component not updated", let us know.
that may be a separate bug.

2. chrome://plugins should show the "Widevine Content Decryption Module" as
enabled & not disabled.

if both of the above check out, and NFLX still isn't working, your issue
could be that your AntiVirus is blocking "widevinecdmadapter.dll"
or "widevinecdm.dll". We have seen a few cases where user AV software was
incorrectly flagging either of the 2 above dll's as "bad". In those cases,
checking your AV software for alerts/warnings for "widevinecdmadapter.dll"
or "widevinecdm.dll" and allowing or enabling/permitting these dll's to
load. these are the binaries that represent the Widevine content
decryption module & its adapter.

I've just installed the latest stable chrome x64 on my windows 8.1 system
from http://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/?platform=win64. I have
the CDM (1.4.6.703) downloaded & have been able to play Netflix movies.

to address individual comments above :
#10 : Yovav... I wonder if you are getting the wrong architecture? can you
check the ...WidevineCDM\1.4.6.703\_platform_specific directory and tell me
if the directory is win_x64? it should be if you've got 64bit browser.

#11 : shortgir... what issue do you see? can you tell me the results of 1)
& 2) above? your issue w/youtube videos though might be a separate bug
since YT doesn't use CDM for its free videos. Please file a separate bug
for that issue and we'll take a look!

#12 : mccart... you shouldn't need another update if you've got 1.4.6.703
CDM. Can you look at 1) & 2) and let us know if it's been disabled at
all? Then check to see if your antivirus might be blocking it.

#13 : ashleigh... your problem might be antivirus blocking it. do you have
an Antivirus suite on your computer that could be blocking this?

For those w/AV issues, can you check chrome://histograms about 2min after
you repro the issue on Netflix, and copy/paste what you see in the
histogram for "Plugin.PpapiPluginLoadErrorCode_widevinecdmadapter.dll" that
would help us. if you see 5, chances are it's an AntiVirus issue.

@eri

I just had the same problem with WideVine and Netflix, and I wanted to tell
you that deleting my user profile directory did continue to fix the problem
(after using the tempuser workaround).
Also, I am using Microsoft Security Essentials as my antivirus suite, so I
doubt that caused the problem (though it could have).

Hiya,

Managed to run chrome through the temp user profile, updated the Widevine

If it is my antivirus (Avast at the moment) is there a way to get around it?

@Cammoted (per #26) : Do I understand that using the temporary user profile
directory worked for you?

@ashleigh : hrm, I just installed the Avast Internet Security 2015 (with
Chrome), on a Windows XP system, and netflix content plays (the CDM loads,
no issues). A few questions for you Ashleigh if you don't mind :
1) what version of avast! do you have installed?
2) if you temporarily disable avast! (right click the avast! icon in your
status pane & select "Avast shields control"->Disable for 1 hour, then kill
all chrome.exe processes (in task manager -> CTRL-SHIFT-ESC and find
chrome.exe, then kill process), then relaunch chrome, does it work for
Netflix?
3) I'm assuming you're on Windows XP, can you confirm?
4) what other extensions do you have installed for Chrome? can you goto
chrome://extensions and list what you've got installed?
5) do you have any other antivirus software installed?

@ashleigh : thanks..are you an admin on the system? Can you right click
the Chrome icon (or shortcut) on your desktop & select "Run as
administrator"? Wonder if it's a permissions problem (though I'm concerned
that using a different user directory & launching with the command line to
use it didn't work)?

Can you also check to see if any DENY checkbox are ticked for any of the
users or groups on the following files:
c:\users\<yourusername>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User
Data\WidevineCDM\1.4.6.703\_platform_specific\win_x86\ :
--widevinecdm.dll
--widevinecdmadapter.dll
by r-clicking the file and selecting the security tab. Check the
permissions for each of the users defined (e.g. "Ashleigh" and "SYSTEM"
and "Administrators") to see if there's a Deny checkbox ticked. I know you
checked for your user name, I wonder if there's a group you're a member of
on that PC that is being denied.

Thanks @ashleigh, I want to get you up and running as quickly as possible.

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=407902

I've had this problem on my newly installed PC when trying to watch Netflix.
Re-installing Chrome did not work.

OS: Windows 8.1 Pro (64-bit)
Chrome version: 38.0.2125.122 m (64-bit)
Widevine Content Decryption Module version: 1.4.6.703 (and enabled)
Anti-virus: The default OS one (Microsoft Defender I guess)

After trying out a lot of the things here in the posts it suddenly worked
without me doing anything.
I was about to check for the security permissons when I noticed they where
fine and I wanted to reproduce the error and check the histograms. When I
tried to reproduce the error it simply worked.

I'm also experiencing this. I did an uninstall / wipe Chrome data /

I can confirm that running Chrome as admin, Netflix playback works (e.g.

does not work (e.g. Widevine is not working).
