New issue 466027 by pcpl...@gmail.com: CrystalHD is not supported in Chrome
40 Flash player and HTML5 video codecs
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=466027

Chrome Version : Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1) AppleWebKit/537.36
(KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/40.0.2214.115 Safari/537.36 OPR/27.0.1689.76
URLs (if applicable) : youtube.com or other flash/html5 videos
Other browsers tested:
Add OK or FAIL after other browsers where you have tested this issue:
Safari 6:
Firefox 20: OK
IE 7/8: OK

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install a Broadcom Crystal HD 70015
2. Go on an HTML5 or Flash video website like youtube
3. The Broadcom Crystal HD is not supported in any of Chrome 'PPAPI' or
HTML5 video playback

What is the expected result?

Videos should run very smoothly, and the Broadcom CrystalHD monitor
software should mark, while Flash PPAPI video playback, that it is enabled.

What happens instead?

No playback, very sluggish video with no activation of the CrystalHD video
decoder.

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if
possible.

in Chrome 40 Flash player and HTML5 video codecs
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=466027

Here is more information on the problem. To be able to see this issue you
must use an external DSP, the Broadcom Crystal HD 70015 media processor.

The main problem is that this DSP or video accelerator is not supported for
video playback with Flash Player and HTML5 in Chrome 40, so the videos are
sluggish on Chrome.

In the same way Chrome (maybe) supports Nvidia or AMD GPU acceleration,
Chrome is not supporting the Broadcom Crystal HD 70015.

On Broadcom's website, there is an open source software.

No that's just for Linux sorry. It still doesn't enable CrystalHD support
in Chrome, but I thought it might help the Chrome devs to have working
drivers.

Than you Gomez; there is no binary for Windows, and I don't really know if
someone can make it possible with the drivers that it becomes enable on the
latest Chrome but it should be possible

I got flash working in youtube and every other site I've used so far. No go
on HTML5 though, not sure if Crystal HD even supports it? I'm using SRWARE
IRON Version 44.0.2350.0 (64-bit). I made a few changes in chrome://flags
and chrome://plugins and added an extension. What I did to get it to work:

chrome://flags
-Enabled "Override software rendering list"
-Enabled "NPAPI"

chrome://plugins - under Adobe Flash Player (if you don't have them just
download and install)
-Disabled PPAPI (Pepperflash) - Version is 19,0,0,188 , File is
pepflashplayer64_19_0_0_188.dll
-Enabled NPAPI - Version is 19,0,0,188 , File is NPSWF64_19_0_0_188.dll

Extension-
Flash Player for Youtube - enabled

Other extensions I have installed in case anyone is curious, though I don't
think it's a factor.
-Adblock Plus
-HTTPS Everywhere
-Ublock Origin
-uMatrix

It is not possible anymore to use NPAPI plugins in Chrome and SRIRON since
the 1st of September. And the flag chrome://flags is not existing. How did
you do ?

Use 44 version, probably won't be able to use it on any Chronium 45 build
or after until PPAPI somehow recognizes Crystal HD. NPAPI has been disable
in them for good. I'm using SRIRON 44.0.2350.0 64bit. You can download it
on SRIRON Forums.

Thank you, I will try it.
- Chrome adds CrystalHD in its HTML5 player, best choice
- Or PPAPI flash gets support for the CrystalHD, worse choice because Flash
is dying
Also, seems that you have Linux, on Windows on my system, CrystalHD support
has been disabled starting on NPAPI Flash 15.x...

I'm not on Linux, I use Windows 7.

It hasn't been disabled, I'm using NPAPI 19 and it supports Crystal HD just
fine. Just make sure NPAPI fule installs into your flash folder. If it
doesn't just manually copy it in.

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=466027

With your tip, I tested it and it is working great (SRIRON + NPAPI Flash,
the CrystalHD is working). In fact I was using Opera 12 and I saw that on
flash 14+ the CrystalHD was not working anymore but on SRIRON it is working
so everything is OK. To bad NPAPI is not supported anymore and the PPAPI
don't have the good code to support the CrystalHD.

I hope that they will implement the Crystal HD for HTML5 videos now as
Flash is less and less used.

Is HTML5 support dependent on Crystal HD drivers or the browser supporting
it?

BTW, I'm using the extension "Flash player for youtube" to force it to play
flash and not HTML5.

What laptop are you using this on, I'm just curious. I'm using a Thinkpad
X120e.

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=466027

From what I understand HTML5 is just text sending a video link to the
browser in .mp4 (just like an .jpg image), and it is the browser to decode
the video (the browser plays the role of the video player), it is just like
VLC decoding mp4. So it is the browser to use the correct filters on the OS
(Windows) so it can decode correctly the video. Before, it was Flash that
was the decoder (for whatever reason), now it is the browser itself.

Chrome doesn't use the Broadcom filters. I'm using a HP Mini.

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=466027

I'm very much interested in this as well. I have an Acer Aspire One D250
(KAV60), which in stock form is an N270 (single core Atom CPU), 1Gb RAM and
160Gb HD. Mine's got 2Gb RAM and an SSD though. The machine is sluggish but
more than usable.

Where it all falls apart is video, Youtube is super laggy. These CrystalHD
decoders were MEANT to fix all this, but the software is really really
lagging.

Here's the decoder card:

http://www.amazon.com/Broadcom-BCM70015-Crystal-Hardware-DecoderHardware/dp/B008D96Z8Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1446969682&sr=8-1&keywords=broadcom+crystal+hd

I also want this supported in Chrome, I'd love to have things like YouTube,
Netflix (etc) all working smoothly - this chip is capable of it, but
without software support, it's useless.

webbiega...@gmail.com

You are exactly right ! What Chrome must have is a simple small code to
support the DirectShow filter of the BC to use it when it is present
instead of relying solely on software decoding which is unusable without a
Quad Core 3.0 Ghz CPU.

This issue has been ongoing for years now with nobody really willing or
wanting to fix it, by the looks of it.

i.e.

https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/youtube/Il055Eodlks

Probably because netbooks are old and slow, but I'd LOVE to see support for
the chip added somehow.
