New issue 460379 by sotong...@gmail.com: Option to "Always open with system
viewer" for PDFs cannot be undone
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=460379

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_8_5)
AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/40.0.2214.111 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Download PDF
2. Click on arrow next to file in download bar to get additional options
3. Select "Always open with system viewer"
4. PDFs now open immediately after downloading in system viewer (in
this case, Preview). Downloads bar does not appear after PDFs are
downloaded so "Always open with system viewer" cannot be unchecked.

What is the expected behavior?

What went wrong?
Well, was I happy to see the "Always open with system viewer" option
appear! I checked it and rejoiced! For about 2 seconds. Now, the downloads
bar does not appear for pdfs anymore and every single pdf opens in
Preview. I cannot uncheck "Always open with system viewer" because the
downloads bar is not appearing for pdfs and so I cannot access the option
at all. This is incredibly annoying as I often have to download multiple
pdfs in one sitting and I have to keep switching apps back to Chrome.
Please resolve this asap.

I believe what most people in the other threads previously dealing with
this issue want is not for pdfs to open in the system viewer immediately
after downloading, but if we choose to open a pdf by clicking it on the
downloads bar, it should default to opening in the system viewer without us
needing to take any extra actions like having to select "Open with system
viewer". This used to be the case before Chrome PDF Viewer was made the
default... can we just have this arrangement back please?

Posting here because all other threads I found relating to the addition of
the "Always open with system viewer" option to the downloads bar were
closed.

Did this work before? Yes Before Chrome defaulted to opening PDFs in Chrome
PDF Viewer instead of system viewer

Chrome version: 40.0.2214.111 Channel: n/a
OS Version: OS X 10.8.5
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 16.0 r0

Couldn't reproduce the issue with chrome 40.0.2214.111 stable and
42.0.2309.2 canary on MacBook Air 10.9.5.

sotongpok@, Click on the arrow of downloaded pdf to see "Always open with
system viewer" option. And click on it again to see third option i.e, "open
with system viewer".
The same has been shown in attached video.

Would you mind take a look at the video and suggest if I am understanding
the issue correctly.

I don't know why you can't reproduce it, but this is what happens for me.

As you can see in the video attached, the downloads bar doesn't even appear
anymore and the pdf just opens in Preview immediately. This happens whether
I'm saving from Chrome PDF Viewer or right-click --> "Save Link As..."

Forgot to add: Right after I initially checked "Always open with system
viewer", pdf opened in Preview, downloads bar disappeared, so I was unable
to even access the arrow of that initial pdf to uncheck the option

Seems like you have some extensions installed on chrome like ABP etc ..
Would you mind try with disabling extensions and with a new profile.

Please update with your findings.

Tried out your suggestions - extensions disabled, new profile of Person 2
(only extensions are the default: Drive, Docs, Sheets and Slides). Problem
is reproduced: After I checked "Always open with system viewer", opened the
pdf in Preview and closed the downloads bar, subsequent attempts to
download pdfs resulted in immediate opening in Preview without downloads
bar appearing.

Note: I believe I am probably mistaken in my recollection of actions taken
after initial download as per comment #3 - description in above paragraph
is my usual procedure.

I also tried individually disabling each extension while using my own
profile (Person 1) to see if that would have any effect on this bug,
unfortunately that was not the case.

Tested this issue on windows 7, Linux Ubuntu 14.04 and Mac 10.10.3 using
chrome latest stable 42.0.2311.90 with the below steps

1. Go to http://ga.berkeley.edu/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/pdf-sample.pdf
2.Save the PDF
3.Click on arrow right side of the downloaded file
4.Able to select/Unselect Always open with system viewer

Not able to reproduce the issue on ALL OS.Please find the attached screen
cast and confirm if anything missed here.
Could you please try to upgrade the chrome to latest stable version and
check the issue on fresh profile. Please update the thread if you are still
seeing the issue on latest stable.

I had the exact same issue (very annoying).
I found a way of undoing the "Always open with system viewer" option.

Download a large enough PDF file so that the download status appears in the
download bar. (Too small a file, and the download bar won't appear.)

Before it finishes downloading, click on the arrow next to the file, and
de-select the "Always open with system viewer" option.

Voila.

No option to "clear auto-opening settings2 in chrome 46.0.2490.86 m, has
this been added recently?

I worked around the issue by starting the download of a very large pdf
file. This meant the download bar was visible long enough to allow me to
untick "Always open with system viewer"

This setting should not auto-open the system viewer upon completion of a
download in all cases (especially when the "save link as" context menu item
has been used). Instead it should result in the system viewer being called
when a pdf file on the downloads bar is clicked.
