New issue 584562 by JWS.F...@gmail.com: html5 audio tag 'currentTime' still
always 0
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=584562

Example URL:
http://p.subfireplayer.net/

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. go to that url
2. click a playlist that has files
3. try to play

What is the expected behavior?
the current time adjusts.

What went wrong?
currentTime is always 0. there is no feedback events sent. the code has no
way to know when the file has stopped playing.

Did this work before? Yes chrome 39

Is it a problem with Flash or HTML5? HTML5

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

Chrome version: 48.0.2564.95 Channel: stable
OS Version: 4.4.2, 5.1.1
Flash Version:

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=327425 says this was
resolved, but it is most definitely not. at least 2 others have reported
this on stack-overflow.

Additional details: the "stalled" event fires almost immediately after
playback starts, although the file continues to play. The "ended" event
never fires. For an app playing a playlist, there is no way to know when
the file is done playing in order to 'next' to the next file.

Doesn't matter if mp3 or ogg.

I can't repro this issue on 48.0.2564.95 / 4.4.2 and 5.0 as well with the
steps mentioned in #1. Time adjusts as the audio plays. Can you provide bug
report and video or screenshot if possible for further triaging.

nothing is different at the request/response header protocol level, so i'll
presume that the new beta changed something the transcoding (maybe in not
applying it if it isn't necessary).

In fact, I just triggered it.

Try this. Continue to log into the app page with the generic credentials.
Click the settings icon in the upper left. Change the bitrate from
Unlimited to 80.

That turns on the ffmpeg transcoding to downsample. At that point, I no
longer see the time update, even though I do see it still work on Chrome
desktop.

Following up on this, I'm getting similar problems now with the updated
webkit-based web container for Amazon's Fire Tablet 5.1.1. At this point,
I'm discovering it is specific to the *file*, because when i find one that
works on it, it works on the Chrome Android as well. None of these gave me
problems in 4.4 on the Fire.

Files that I personally ripped from CDs on iTunes (usually fixed-rate 192)
or older 128 files ripped by grip on Linux: those do not work. I get 0's
every time. Doesn't seem to matter if the iTunes rip came from a Mac or a
Windows box.

Files that I purchased as mp3s from another party (in particular, Amazon -
usually variable rate, average 225) work perfectly. I get currentTime and
duration as i expect to.

I am going to see what i can do with mp3diags to figure out what the core
differences between the files are and will follow-up here.

Whatever version is used in the Crosswalk plug-in for phonegap/cordova also
has the same problem, same files. This is fun.
