After deleting user profile directories and removing the registry keys
mentioned above failed to resolve the error, I eventually managed to get
the MSI installer working by also deleting the registry key group
HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Uninstall/Google
Chrome/.

Background:

I ended up with this same (or a substantially similar) issue when I
attempted to install Chrome 10 from an MSI on a Windows XP system where the
non-administrative user had previously installed Chrome 10 Beta from the
normal non-MSI installer, and then subsequently uninstalled it.

My installation log (%TEMP%\chrome_installer.log) was giving the
error "Already installed version [version number] conflicts with the
current install mode." I did a Ctrl-F find in regedit.exe for that
particular version number and found it in the path mentioned above. (I
believe there may have been one other registry group as well, which I
neglected to write down.) Deleting all of the Google-related folders
allowed the MSI installer to work.

Currently you can't install the MSI while running as a user who has non-MSI
Chrome installed.

It looks like we left behind the uninstall key which made the MSI installer
think non-MSI Chrome was still present. We fixed a bug along these lines
recently, so this shouldn't happen with future releases of non-MSI Chrome.
Keeping this bug open to track until the fix gets pushed out.
