Currently running Linux Mint 13, and the same problem occurred after
MintUpdate installed 20.0.1132.43. No errors, just nothing. System
Monitor shows two chrome processes are Sleeping and, when I kill them, they
go into Zombie mode.

Anantha/Vivian, are there logs that we can have users help capture to

At least one report says that removing the Flash plugin allows Chrome to
start. If you are experiencing this, can you try:

sudo mv /opt/google/chrome/PepperFlash /opt/google/chrome/PepperFlash.bak
google-chrome

If that doesn't work, does this print anything:

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/opt/google/chrome ldd
/opt/google/chrome/chrome | grep "not found"

OK, "sudo mv /opt/google/chrome/PepperFlash

loaded webpages. Obviously, there is no Flash though.

I added the following in the groups section:

I had the same problem on my Kubuntu 12.04. Chrome would not start at
all. I have isolated the problem to the pepflashplayer. I changed the
name of libpepflashplayer.so to "libpepflashplayerXX.so", then copied the
adobe flash player (libflashplayer.so)file to the PepperFlash directory.
Chrome will now start, of course the flash player doesn't work.

I have had trouble with adobe flash player in any version, whether from the
Ubuntu repository, or downloaded from Adobe to work in any browser (FF,
Opera, Chromium, and now Chrome).

As an aside, when I did get the repository Adobe flash player (v.
11.2.202.236 ubuntu 0.12.04.1)to work at all in Chromium, it would not work
in Google Maps street view, with the error to upgrade to version 10 or
greater.

Based on the details so far, it's looking like an issue with older CPUs,
possibly ones that don't support sse2 instructions. The Pepper Flash plugin
probably won't support such systems, and we may just have to disable it if
the necessary CPU capabilities aren't detected. For now, users who are
experiencing this problem should run with
the "--disable-bundled-ppapi-flash" flag.

Ok, if that's the case then we need a retro version available, prior to the

Same issue here in Fedora 17.
We users of old Athlon XP CPU's couldn't use the latest Flash plugin
(version 10 they made available with security patches worked).
I (maybe others too) was relying on Chrome for Flash. It would be great if
we could have our old timers supported in some way.
Otherwise we probably will have to resort to that legacy Flash 10 I
mentioned.

BTW, if anyone's interested, Flash player's version are available at
http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html
I think version 10.3.183.20 will work with our CPU's (but if Chrome manages
to have a workaround for us, better ;-)

I have a HP / AMD Athlon XP 2600+ CPU.

"sudo mv /opt/google/chrome/PepperFlash /opt/google/chrome/PepperFlash.bak

However, installing Flash player after the sudo command from
http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html
did not.

At #22 and others, while this isn't fixed (either by Chrome automatically
disabling the plugin or else) you have to install that Flash player version
from Adobe and start Chrome with:
google-chrome --disable-bundled-ppapi-flash

Maybe for us Chrome would have to detect the full Flash player version
(e.g. 10.3.183.20 instead of just 10.3.183) so it would know it's a
security patched version and won't offer to update it (the latest version
doesn't work for us).

OS: Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid)
cpu: is AMD Athlon XP3000+
gpu: VIA UniChrome.

I'm also having the same problem. I try to run chrome and nothing happen.
System monitor says it's "sleeping".

This may be irrelevant, but this is what I got when I ran "google-chrome
--disable-bundled-ppapi-flash", though I should note that chrome did start
up (with flash not working)

Kind of stinks that I have to disable flash to get it up and running,
because Flash is the only reason I started using chrome in the first place.

Hope you get this worked out. In the meantime, thankfully I have a copy of
version 19 in my apt archives. Time to regress... and create a new profile
since apparently profiles aren't backward compatible.

non-working version to update to.

Weird that after I rebooted I can start google-chrome without problem
(without any options). The last time I rebooted my computer was 23 days
ago, and during this time the kernel has been upgraded (but not yet
rebooted to use the new one) so maybe there is something to do with it.

Adobe Flash Player (libflashplayer.so) version 11.2 does not work

Versions "10.3 r183" and "11.1 r102" work fine in all browsers.

google-chrome 19.0.1084.56-r140965 with included Flash Player "11.2 r202"
(libgcflashplayer.so) also works in 19.0, but does not load in version 20.0

Version 20.0.1132.47, Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE amd64), had to
disable pepper flash in chrome//:plugins, and enable old outdated adobe
flash. no matter where, I was unable to watch movies. It was very very bad
on justin.tv but also on youtube.

due to the old flash version I have to manually allow each time I use it. I
hate it!!!

Hi everyone,

+1 (me too)

Google Chrome version 20.0.1132.47 refuses to start on my system unless I
use the "--disable-bundled-ppapi-flash" flag.

That means no more Flash player at ALL on my system, as Google Chrome was
the only working solution I had to play Flash. Isn't there any way to
downgrade to fix this regression?

While this problem is being worked out, does anyone know where I can find
chrome 18 or 19 for FC14 so I can revert?

For those who do not want to do the full revert to a previous version.

On kubuntu 12.04 I just extracted the 19 version deb file (linked to in
comment 54) then copied 'libgcflashplayer.so' over
to '/opt/google/chrome/'. I still run with ppapi flash disabled to avoid
issues and flash is working fine.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH philswyett!!! (comment 60)

Your solution works great on my Lubuntu 12.04 system, and it indeed allows
me to play Flash on the very latest Chrome version (after disabling
PepperFlash)!!!

I hope the dev team will keep the working libgcflashplayer.so from Chrome
19 in the next versions of Chrome.

viettrungluu,
Thank you for your trouble.
When will be this changes applied to a stable release?
or
Could you give us the non-official binary patch?
It would be a something like pre-release test.

@dharani: Could I merge this (r145632 and r145639) to M20? It's low-risk,
and the only verification that should be needed is that Pepper Flash still
loads on modern Linux systems (32- and 64-bit).

@kareng: Ditto for M21.

It seems that most of these issues are being generated by SSE2 unsupported
cpus.
Intel Pentium III Coppermine
Intel Pentium III Tualatin
Intel Celeron Mendocino
Intel Celeron Coppermine-128
Intel Celeron Tualatin-256
Intel Pentium M
AMD Athlon XP
Does Chrome have any intentions of fixing this and will we be informed of
when it will be available so people with these cpu's don't aren't forced to
use unsecure old versions of flash?

In reality these are two different issues. This thread was started because
Google Chrome 20 would crash upon startup for some people. It turned out to
be a Linux only, Flash plugin issue. So in order to solve the crashing
issue, the Flash plugin had to be disabled. This bug was reported here:
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=134940 and is marked
as "fixed".

The broken Flash plugin for pre-SSE2 processors is a separate bug. That has
been reported here
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=134940 and is marked
as "unconfirmed". The last comment from thestig does not sound hopeful that
a solution is a priority.
