Hi,

I've helped debugging this. It seems to be a relatively common issue with
Windows and Helvetica Neue, see e.g.
http://www.mroughton.net/blog/helvetica-neue-chrome-bug-fix/

I put together a page that tests this issue specifically:
http://home.samfundet.no/~sesse/font.html -- on the machine in question,
only the third line (the one in Helvetica Neue) shows the character set
issues. Uninstalling Helvetica Neue fixes the problem.

The machine in question is running Windows 7.

Uninstalling Helvetica Neue, while a valid solution to this problem for
anyone who is not a professional designer, is virtually impossible for any
professional graphic designer, as the typeface family is so commonly used
and useful. Is there any known solution for this on Mac OS 10.6 which does
not involve uninstalling Helvetica Neue?

The only application on my computer for which this is a problem is Google
Chrome, and it has rendered Chrome utterly useless, as nearly all headlines
and much text on virtually any website is just a garbled mess of
incomprehensible symbols. I've been searching for a solution, but finally
had to give up and just no longer use Chrome (sad, because it seems to be a
more efficient browser).
