23.0.1271.97 m on windows7 64bit machine. I had this issue for about a
month whenever I would pull up http://memebase.cheezburger.com It would
freeze for about 30sec and recover after a reboot but every time after that
it would be fine. Now it freezes and never recovers, I have to do a hard
shutdown to recover. Whats going on with this? Im running AdBlock 2.5.51.
I am not having this problem on 2 other windows7/xp machines with current
chrome build/AdBlock.

There are two modes: old Disqus and new Disqus 2012 (v 2.74) (that uses
ajax and other cool technologies). Chrome issues appear only in new Disqus
2012 (v 2.74) mode.

Previous Disqus versions

- Chrome versions where the latest version of Disqus started
hanging/freezing
Google Chrome 23 and 24

- Does the issue occur in other browsers.
No. We tested Chromium 18 and IE 9 and could not reproduce this behaviour.
We are not aware of any issues on Linux or Mac or other browsers like
Firefox, Opera, IE.

Additional information:

- Visiting any website that contains the Disqus comment system embedded
enough to freeze Chrome
- Chrome freezes only when the page is opened for the first time. After
10-20 sec it would recover.

I had the same problem, my laptop froze on any browsers(Chrome, IE, Safari,
Opera, Firefox). I did some research and solved my problem by removing old
version nvidia drivers. My laptop is Sony VAIO and downloaded the new
version nvidia drivers and install it. After that, It runs smooth as before.

One user said that at moment of freezing, Google Chrome something does with
Windows/System32/catroot folder. Look at screenshot.

User replaced this folder and freezes stoped.

Maybe it will be useful info.

mig3008@, i am NOT able to reproduce this issue on reported version of
chrome#23.0.1271.64 as well as on Latest Canary#27.0.1418.2 on Win7 (64
bit).

Could you please try with clean installation of chrome (By deleting
UserData from C:\Users\XXXXXXXXX\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data)?
and also by disabling any specific extensions (through chrome://extensions)?

Also please let us know, the issue is existing with latest stable version
of chrome#24.0.1312.57 as well?

NOTE: We have tested this issue with four Win7 64 bit machines (Both
Desktops & Laptops), but unable to reproduce.

I'm now thinking it isn't the Disqus code, but the Facebook Connect module
that it contains that is causing this.

On this page:

there is no Disqus but there is a Facebook Connect, and it froze my whole
computer (not just the browser) for a full 30 seconds as the hard drive
chucked away.

Couldn't move the mouse, couldn't hit Ctrl Alt Delete, nothing. Total hang.

I have the problem too, with firefox.
I also checked with procmon.exe what was written on the disk during those
20secs :
The freeze starts when firefox reads c:\windows\system32\atmfd.dll which is
Adobe Type Manager, a windows system file used to render fonts.
Then firefox uses the 20secs of freeze to access many many files inside
c:\windows\system32\catroot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE} which is
a place where windows stores his system files signatures, used in case of
system file overwrite caused by a bad program, to restore original windows
file.

I'm sorry to say that 46 hours later, the problem has returned.

Obliterating the Chrome directory every 48 hours doesn't seem like such a
great workaround.

Google Chrome freeze's my PC for 10-30 sec sometimes (can't move mouse) and
then go back normal, on sites like dailymotion.com or theverge.com. Seems
problem in a webkit, because Origin from EA, have same freezes (Origin
use's also webkit) This problem continues like a two months. Please fix!

Issue continues to happen with build "Version 27.0.1453.116 m" and on what
is a seemingly random array of sites and pages. I run the very same version
on multiple machines, but this only occurs on my Dell Latitude D630,
running Windows 7 32-bit.

I don't think they are ever going to fix this.

They've just closed Issue 116739
(https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=116739) with "won't
fix" and that's been open far longer than this one.

Time to start cutting the apron strings. If they are not going to fix
this, then my Nexus 4 will be replaced with a Windows Phone. I have Chrome
on that too but if they aren't going to fix a critical bug in the desktop
version of Chrome then it affects my Nexus 4 too.

I've had this hang issue for many months, especially often when opening
theverge.com but also other sites such as giantbomb.com. It was driving me
crazy and I'm on the verge of switching browsers, despite being in love
with a lot of stuff in chrome (Especially the dev tools since i do web
development).

After reading through this thread and especially seeing the screenshots
from mig3008, I bravely decided to move the
{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE} folder from
Windows/System32/catroot/ despite reading that one shouldn't mess with
catroot.

Well what'cha know, it fixed the problem entirely (See below before you do
it too!). It really seems like Chrome is doing a *.cat file search
operation in there or something and for people running older instances of
windows (many updates over the years, windows update creates these cat
files when doing updates as far as i can tell) there's like 3000+ .cat
files in that folder. Searching through all of these is probably what's
hanging up chrome, it looks like to me anyway.

Well before you all go on and move that folder, after 2 days of no problems
and no hangs, my Win7 gave a bluescreen at boot this morning and wouldn't
boot at all. I could fix it by booting into Linux and moving the
{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}, which I wisely kept backed up
elsewhere, back into catroot, enabling windows to boot fine again.

Googling more info on catroot and if one can clean it up sadly didn't turn
up many results. Microsoft just says one shouldn't remove the folder and
others seem to now know to which extent you can clean it up without
breaking windows; and I'm not about to go trial and error here too much.
Seems to me Windows Update needs these files.

Please chrome dev team, fix this! These hangs drive me and probably tens of
thousands of others nuts on a daily basis. Hate nothing more than a 40sec
system-wide freeze when I'm in a hurry to check the weather before i miss
the tube.

Running Windows 7, ATI GPU (Radeon 4890), Intel Q6600 CPU.

Again, it has nothing to do with Disqus. In Windows, the entire computer
hangs for more than 30 seconds (no input possible of any kind) when Chrome
attempts to load a web page that has custom fonts. The hang is caused when
Chrome attempts to read through the security catalog files (.cat) as they
relate to fonts. The more fonts a user has installed on their computer,
the worse the problem and the longer the hang. Chrome needs to cease this
action, or otherwise detect the hang and interrupt it.

Here is a page that this occurs on in Win 7, newest version of Chrome, with
more than 100 fonts installed on the machine. This hang will typically
happen early in a day's session (shortly after boot).

This problem is getting worse for me. It first occurred 2 weeks ago. now
it happens just about every day. (I'm on fresh Windows 8 install).

I don't know if it's coincidence or not but, 2 weeks ago, I had moved the
Chrome User Data folder to a RAM drive (another shortcoming in chrome that
should be fixed is the excessive writing data to disk).

I'm just going to start pasting the URL of every page that causes this
system hang every time it happens. Sooner or later Google developers will
look at the code of all those pages, learn what they have in common, and
fix Chrome so that it stops hanging the WHOLE COMPUTER. If it just crashed
Chrome, that would be fine. But that's not what's happening. THE WHOLE
COMPUTER HANGS. Do you people get it?

I've had this problem for a couple of years, and only on certain machines.
Drives me crazy. Certain pages repeatedly and consistently cause it. It
will happen only once during a browser session, then you're good after
that. But it usually causes a solid 30 seconds of entire machine freeze.
I've poured through the html of the offending page, but no success yet.

I'm another who only encounters this total freeze when using Disqus on
Chrome - and I'm on a lot of different sites that use it, so it happens to
me several times a day.
Once mine locks up, it never moves again, and I cannot even shutdown or
restart via the start button - I have to literally pull the plug on the
computer and plug it back in and start over. WTF?!?
I read the other comments here and cannot believe Google cannot resolve
this after all these years!!

I have the same problem on Chrome 16.0.912.63 and Firefox 33.1.1.
The fix on Firefox is to go into "about:config" and
turn "gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled" to false.

It has a custom font embedded in one of the CSS files.

I think I have found the reason on Win7 SP1 with Firefox & Chrome for this
problem.
The "Windows Font Cache Service" was set to Manual.

I changed it to Automatic and I can now load these problem links without a

@CIDDI I no longer have this problem on my new machine, but I think you
found the fix. I tried to turn off the windows font cache service, I
stopped it and set it to manual. then I went to the two links you provided
and when I checked the windows font cache service started on it own (even
with the manual start option).

Disabling "gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled" in Firefox is a remedy but
doesn't solve the underlying problem.

The full solution for me was to delete the Windows fontcache:
http://www.ehow.com/how_7197467_rebuild-font-cache.html This webpage tells
you to delete a file and reboot your computer.

Interestingly, it didn't work the first time I deleted the file and
rebooted, I had to repeat the procedure 2-3 times. But since then no
browser freezes, even with "gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled" turned on. :-)
