Bumping priority based on increased volume of user feedback since our
release of M22 to Stable.

@Ganesh, the Feedback cluster (http://goto.google.com/3558974), contains
reports from users who appear to be on the latest Stable version
(22.0.1229.79 (Build: 158531)). Some reports contain screenshots that
reflect specific error codes for error 3.

Hello.
Im having the same problem when trying to update Chrome.
"Update failed (error: 3)An error occurred while checking for updates:
Update check failed to start (error code 3: 0x80070003 -- system level)"
I have tried uninstalling and installing Chrome again to no avail.
Running on Win XP.
Hopefully it gets resolved soon.

Comment #52 on issue 137915 by jneib...@gmail.com: Update failed (error:3)
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=137915

I've suddenly started having this problem on the latest stable release,
Version 23.0.1271.64 m on Windows Vista 64-bit. I get the following error
message:

Update failed (error: 3)An error occurred while checking for updates:
Update check failed to start (error code 3: 0x80070312 -- system level).

I don't recall ever seeing this before. I tried downloading and running a
new installer, but it didn't help. I suppose I can try uninstalling and
reinstalling, but that doesn't appear to have worked for others with the
same issue.

Comment #54 on issue 137915 by so...@chromium.org: Update failed (error:3)
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=137915

@jneiberger, is this still broken for you?

Thank you for sharing the Sawbuck log. It does not tell us why is it
failing but it does raise a couple of questions. First, do you have a
per-machine install of Chrome? We can see that Chrome is running from
the "Program Files", which indicates a per-machine install. And the error
that it is showing also indicates a per-machine, system-level install.
However the update task that you had run and captured the Sawbuck log is
for an Omaha per-user install. We see this is running for your
Administrator user profile.

I assume you've manually run the scheduled task for Google Update. Do you
see a GoogleUpdateTask for the machine as well? If yes, can you please run
that instead and send us the Sawbuck log.

There is also something of interest in this Sawbuck log. It's the line that
says "[IsElevatedWithEnableLUAOn][1]" That means that a user instance of
Google Update is running with Admin privileges. We don't know how this got
installed this way but it is a mode that we don't support well although
we've done our best to make it work. This user instance is not causing the
issue you've reported but it could be related to it.

In conclusion, if the problem still exists, please run the Google Update
machine tasks and send the log results.

I meant to mention that I am still having this issue and I'm also not sure
how it got installed this way. I've been using Chrome for a long time. I
don't recall doing anything out of the ordinary during the installation
process, although I think I have switched back and forth between the
mainline and beta releases a couple of times. I'm thinking of switching to
the latest beta to solve an unrelated Silverlight plugin problem.

I just noticed that even though About Chrome reports that it is not able to

Comment #58 on issue 137915 by bino...@gmail.com: Update failed (error:3)

it is related i think to the change in location of chrome install. I am not
sure why Chrome decided to start installing in program files now. that is
also breaking a number of tooling code i had built around the previous
assumption, and also breaks the ability to easily run another chrome
version using the --chrome-version switch which I have been doing routinely.

The Chrome organic download from www.google.com/chrome has a preference to
install per-machine, in program files, when run by a user that is an
adminstrator for the machine. If the user consent for elevation is not
granted, the installation will be per-user, in the user profile. I am sorry
to hear it is breaking existing tools. Chrome can still install in the user
profile.

I have no explanation for this, but after rebooting my PC today, Chrome
says it is now up to date and is not complaining about not being able to
check for updates. Very odd. It will be interesting to see if the problem
returns. For now, it appears to have disappeared as mysteriously as it
arrived.

In some cases, there is something that breaks the GoogleUpdate COM
registration. When that happens, some COM classes that Chrome manual
updates needs can't be found, and so, the manual update feature stops
working. I am thinking that in some cases, when GoogleUpdate itself gets a
silent update, the registration is restored, and Chrome manual updates
start working again. It's likely we have a bug somewhere, but we don't know
where.

I tried upgrading to the beta just to see if that would help, but it
didn't. Then I uninstalled and reinstalled Chrome and it's still broken. So
frustrating.

I agree this is frustrating. Upgrading Chrome itself is not likely to help
(and the evidence so far indicates it does not help). Manually checking for
updates in Chrome requires a couple of COM classes to work. These classes
are registered by Google Update. In some cases, for reasons we don't
understand yet, these COM classes are not registered, and thus, the Chrome
feature is broken. An update to Google Update is likely to fix the issue,
as these classes might get registered again. Longer term, we need a more
robust implementation of this feature.

I have hit this error. Attempts to reinstall Chrome to fix it lead to it
ALWAYS being installed under Program Files (x86), even if I delete all
registry and disk files pertaining to Chrome and Google Updater before
installed. Are installs in AppData no longer supported?

It also wipes my profile every time.

Hi megazzt, is there a particular reason you want to install under AppData?
You can use this URL: http://www.google.com/chrome/eula.html?system=false.
Or if you want the dev channel:
http://www.google.com/chrome/eula.html?system=false&extra=devchannel.

Interesting. I rebooted my PC and that allowed Chrome to update:

Version 25.0.1364.36 beta-m
Google Chrome is up to date.

I'm don't know why rebooting the PC suddenly allowed the update to
complete, but that seems to have done the trick. Maybe something is
breaking with the background updater that requires it to be restarted.

I'm having this issue on my work installation - but as stated above, it's
caused by running as admin. However, my Chrome does not seem to function
*without* running as admin. Tabs often won't load, and I can't open any of
the 'chrome://' pages (including settings).

I think it might require a full profile reset as I've been having non-stop
issues with freezing, crashing etc. I can't seem to debug it, and I just
don't want to start from scratch :@

Comment #91 on issue 137915 by jaredwilli: Update failed (error:3)
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=137915

I'm running Windows 7, and I'm also having this same issue in Canary:

Version 27.0.1429.0 canary
Update failed (error: 3)An error occurred while checking for updates:
Update check failed to start (error code 3: 0x80080005).

Note:
I should also point out that this has been the case for a while now I
believe, and I haven't been able to install production release of Chrome
for even longer, after something happened to my program files for Chrome
and Chrome Canary where I ended up needing to uninstall both and reinstall
them, which I had tried at that time, and also just now to try and use
Sawbuck for logging out what might be the cause.

I was eventually able to at least get Canary reinstalled, but I never have
been able to install the production Chrome again since way back then.

When I try to reinstall prod Chrome I get the following:
* Failed to cache the downloaded installer. Error 0x80070005

When trying to install Sawbuck I get this message first:
* The system cannot open the device or file specified.

Once cancelling that dialog since Try again doesn't work, I get this:
* The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this
package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is
2755.

I want to say that when both of my working installs of Chrome were somehow
initially corrupted or otherwise screwed up due to having some experimental
feature or flag enabled which was not fully functional, though I'm not sure
how to back up that theory. I imagine that there must be some Windows
registry key that exists somewhere which is preventing Chrome prod and
Sawbuck from installing and Canary from updating that I could remove but I
wouldn't know where such a key would exist.

I'm more than willing to work with you guys on trying to fix this issue,
however I am unable to get Sawbuck to install, and I doubt there's a
program to debug the debugging program.

If you want to discuss with me further I can be found as jaredwilli
anywhere on google and online.

Comment #92 on issue 137915 by so...@chromium.org: Update failed (error:3)
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=137915

Sorry to hear about this issue.

0x80080005 means that the Omaha service, which is the underlying client
infrastructure to handle the Chrome updates could not start. The error is
CO_E_SERVER_EXEC_FAILURE. This makes me believe that the installation of
Google Update is not working for whatever reason.

Re: not being able to install the stable versions. 0x80070005 means
E_ACCESSDENIED. The error you are getting indicates that the download of
the Chrome installer succeeded but it could not be copied to a directory on
the file system where Google Update maintains a file cache of these
installers. Most likely, you have attempted to install Chrome per-machine.
A possible work around would be to install Chrome per-user. The installer
will ask for elevation and if you cancel the elevation prompt, you will be
able to install Chrome for your user only.

I don't know why Sawbuck is not installing. Could be a permissions issue
too.

Re: The error code is 2755. That message that comes with 2755 comes from
MSI. The error code does not make sense for me. I wonder what I you trying
to install since the production version of Chrome is not an MSI. We have a
business installer that is packaged as an MSI but you should not be
installing that.

Please tell me what are you trying to install from where.

I hope this helps.

Try this one time. start Google Chrome in administrator mode and then try
to check for update again. A lot of times windows blocks the update even
though you allowed to previously and even if it has previously worked. just
try that and see what happens.

Also, Windows is the only operating system that checks for updates in this
manner and it's kind of annoying. Hey Google, you need to implement a
administrator mode access based UAC bypass. It grants admin access to the
update program without prompting the user for user access control
questions. You'll find that Piriform CCleaner has this function as well.
This will solve 90 percent of the problems

Well that's odd. That usually solves most problems. I suggest checking your
computer for errors. You may have some messed up registry settings, or
maybe some system files are messed up. I spoke of CCleaner earlier. I
recommend downloading that program and using its registry cleaner and then
try to update again. If that also fails, uninstall Google Chrome and runner
registry cleaner again to remove any traces of Google Chrome in the
registry.

If that fails, then run this command in the command prompt and start as the
administrator :

SFC /scannow

SFC stands for system file checker and will scan your computer for
corrupted system files. the likeliness of corrupt system files is less but
it's not impossible and might be the cause so I would try everything in
that order. now obviously I can't actually physically help you with
computer.

I am a computer technician, who happens to hang out on the forums to help
people. Without actually being there I can't help as much. I hope that my
suggestions will fix this problem

I haven't used Comodo in a long while,
I only use Windows 8.1 Pro x64 's built-in AV (which is MSSE under lower
versions)

The last time I got this error and had this issue was on a 2x.beta and the
only way I could fix it was to do a reinstall because the GoogleUpdate.exe
was flagged as malware, hope this helps and I am willing to help solve this
if you need anything.

What's going on with this thread?
I get a notification by email that someone has contributed another comment
and it's #114, but when I get here, it doesn't exist.

WTF!!??

It would be good if we had a way to force an update via the command line so
that we could watch each step of the process and see what's happening (and
also force the update). When Chrome doesn't update I just download the full
standalone version and reinstall.

Comment #122 on issue 137915 by so...@chromium.org: Update failed (error:3)

The error at #120 is:

# for hex 0x80080005 / decimal -2146959355 :
CO_E_SERVER_EXEC_FAILURE winerror.h
# Server execution failed

In addition to the advice given at #121, please try again after restarting
the computer. If it still does not work, there may be an issue with the
GoogleUpdate.

This error is generated by the COM runtime in several cases, including:

1) The machine has a high CPU load and the process takes a long time to
start and execute the CoRegisterClassObjects() in less than 120 seconds.
2) The COM server doesn't register for the right class IDs.
3) The COM server is currently stopping and there is a race condition
between CoCreateInstance and the COM server stopping part.
4) There is a security problem in the way the COM server is started

damned PC software (and providers)! Either make your products compatible,
or sunset them! Better yet, we'll simply uninstall and stop using them.
There are now ZILLIONS of suitable alternatives...

After following the suggested remedies, with NO SUCCESS, my solution ended
up being a complete UNINSTALL of Google Chrome AND all registry entries
related to Chrome, then a REINSTALL of the latest and greatest version of
Chrome. At this point I was able to update Adobe with no errors
whatsoever! *** I would like to add this to my comment, I also use Firefox
from time to time and do not have these types of issues with that software.
I am leaning towards a complete UNINSTALL and ABANDONMENT of Google Chrome
should I ever have to go through this tedium of problem solving with
Google's web browser because of having to update add-ons or extensions
again.***

re: #127, I understand that the solution in this case was an uninstall
followed by a reinstall. Did you try an overinstall of Chrome, which is a
download of a latest Chrome installer, followed by running it?

Per response to #127,...#128, I made several attempts to do
an "over-install". Each time I received "error 7". I attempted following
the "solutions" to this error also, with no joy in any case, hence my
compounded frustration from trying to resolve this "update" issue.
***Note: Since the successful re-installation and patch, I have had no
negative issues.***

Holben.James: I'd like to understand why an overinstall didn't help. Could
you look for a file named chrome_installer.log in both %TEMP% (your user
account's temp directory) and in C:\Windows\Temp? If so, please either
attach them to this issue or send them directly to me (grt at chromium dot
org). Thanks!

Problem Solved. Ok thing to do is go to C:\Program Files
(x86)\Google\Update\1.2.37.5
then run GoogleUpdateBroker.exe , GoogleUpdate.exe,
GoogleUpdateComRegisterShell64.exe, GoogleUpdateHelper.msi,
GoogleUpdateOnDemand.exe, GoogleUpdateSetup.exe, GoogleUpdateWebPlugin.exe
or some combination there of. I ran them all and it worked like a charm.
That should solve the problem.

Was getting this error on an old Vista x86 install. Tried a few of the
earlier obvious suggestions without success.

Followed the advice on comment #131 (after closing Chrome) and it finally
came good - now running 45.0.2454.85 m. Would be good to know which
executable rebuilds the GoogleUpdate service (or whichever part thereof is
likely broken) and thereby refine suggestion #131 to be a bit more
professional. :)

It would be good if google had a command line tool that we could use to
force an update and view verbose output. Like
GoogleUpdate --force Chrome
Downloading chrome... done.
Installing chrome... done.

The error at #137 is ERROR_SERVICE_REQUEST_TIMEOUT. That means that the
Chrome update client can't talk with the Google Update service. It is
possible that the issue can be resolved after a reboot, otherwise,
something prevents the gupdate or gupdatem services from starting.
