Oh dear. I just noticed that too. What seems to be repeatedly happening,
is that I set my default to google, but then it gets changed (without
anyone on my end doing it) to V9. I just re-set the default to google and
re-did a search from the search bar and the results populated with no
problem the first time. I tried a few days ago to get that V9 thing off by
removing programs, but it doesn't show up in there.

From the second screenshot in #1, it looks like we're trying to load the
search base page over HTTP. But the Emebedded Search API will never bind
unless without a secure connection. I suspect that's the issue -- we
should never try to do search base page prerendering over HTTP.

I've also asked Sarah to try navigating to https://www.google.com, and she
says Chrome keeps silently redirecting her to http://www.google.com. Also,
when she tries to navigate to https://encrypted.google.com, "the loading
circle just keeps spinning".

That appears to be the nosslsearch address. So maybe the embedded search
API isn't interoperating correctly with nosslsearch?

Also, I told Sarah that she can go home for the day, since that seems like
enough information that we should be able to reproduce now. She'll be
available to provide more information on Monday. (During summer break,
she's only in the office one day a week.)

When google is my default search engine, all of my google
search 'shortcuts'(images, books,imfeelinglucky) are redirected to a
standard google search result page. Noticing the 'sourceid=chrome-instant',
I turned off the instant search, and it is replaced
by 'sourceid=chrome-psyapi2' and shows the standard google search result
page. the URL string I use for my image search
is 'https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&tbm=isch'
when I type this into the omnibox directly(my query instead of %s), it goes
to the proper google result page. In-site searching behaves normally and
when I change the default search engine to another site, I get the correct
result pages with these attempts.

Comment #37 on issue 387175 by robert.s...@gmail.com: Chrome Omnibox Not
This issue was a MAJOR problem for me until I started using this workaround:
Add a new default search provider with something like this for the three
visible fields:
Anyname
Anyname.somename
https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=%s
This makes the omnibox work, as well as any google-referencing 'shortcuts'
(search macros) used from the omnibox. I did this months ago, but I seem
to remember that to achieve this I had to jimmy up the contents of
the "Secure Preferences" file in one of the Chrome configuration
directories while Chrome was not running. It got rid of the problems,
which I suspect is related to Google's search javascript use
of "{google:baseURL}" on way too much when the normal Google entry is the
default search engine.

Comment #39 on issue 387175 by dbl...@google.com: Chrome Omnibox Not
I've been seeing this, but only occasionally, for months.

Observations:
- I'm seeing it on Windows, not Mac or Linux.
- I see this on Google's internal network.
- The URL I get directed to is
https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&es_th=1&ie=UTF-8 ,
not
https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8
as reported above (has addition &es_th=1). BTW, you can find additional
reports of this problem by searching for either of those URLs.
- A subsequent search always succeeds. The URL then is
https://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome-psyapi2&ion=1&espv=2&es_th=1&ie=UTF-8&q=<query>

Dan, the next time this happens, can you try waiting for a few minutes to
see if the results eventually load? One problem here is that the current
UI has no loading indication if the results are taking a long time to fetch
from the network. So a slow search can look like a stuck page.
