kathrelkeld@ - could you point us at the thread where A11y users are
discussing this feature? I'd like to better understand their needs before
we go implementing something.

In many instances the Chromebook/chromebox is hooked up to a TV a few feet
away and many operations can be done with a mouse with minimal data entry
through a virtual keyboard. When we have to do some heavy data entry(like
this or typing an email) we grab the physical keyboard to type. However
now we have to disable the virtual keyboard which pops up each time.

In other instances on the C720p which we also use in the bedroom at night
and if one of us is sleeping we trying to not have the clacking of the
keyboard so calling the virtual keyboard is useful again if all you need is
to write a quick message in the midst of watching some video etc.

The problem is the virtual keyboard does not support dual use cases
simultaneously or intermittent usage of virtual/real. Picking one conflicts
with the ability to use the other.

Right, that's because the virtual keyboard is actually designed to be used
on devices like the Lenovo n20p in its touch-only mode.

However your use cases are interesting and we have some work in progress
that may make that virtual+physical keyboard experience a bit nicer.

Comment #18 on issue 398954 by blitzkov: No way to enable Virtual Keyboard
Hello,

I use a HP 11 Chromebook
(http://www.google.com/intl/en-US/chrome/devices/hp-chromebook-11/#full-specs-content)
and would like to share my input on the vitual keyboard (accessibility
keyboard).

There should be a flag (chrome://flags) where when you have the keyboard
enabled, instead of clicking on the something you're just about to type
(like, I have the keyboard enabled, and try to do a quick Google search, it
automatically pop ups). I think that you should have to click on the icon
in the lower right corner to make it popup.

We're resolved the related issue
(https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=373402)

We're not going to get around to addressing this specific issue. It's a
solution to a niche use case that we're not going to address for the touch
friendly keyboard. Note that the Accessibility On-Screen keyboard already
has the desired button.

Comment #22 on issue 398954 by chpaton: No way to enable Virtual Keyboard
There seems to be a missing usecase here... The virtual keyboard is really
handy for entering emoji or other characters (e.g. accents, other
languages) that aren't on physical keyboard. Without a virtual keyboard
you're reduced to Googling the character you're looking for, which is
extremely tedious.

Thus it's desirable to have a button (e.g. a keyboard icon in the tray)
that can activate the virtual keyboard when desired, but not have it popup
all the time. At the moment it's not possible to do this on Chrome OS as
enabling the virtual keyboard causes it to popup every time any text field
receives focus.

Would you consider removing the WontFix given this additional use case?
With the increasing popularity of emoji I think it's a reasonable one.
