New issue 375238 by ak...@chromium.org: Reset printer cache to force Chrome
browser to select OS default printer.
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=375238

Chrome Version: 34.0.1847.116 (Official Build 260972)

Steps To Reproduce:
- Print a page using Chrome and a network printer
- When network printer is no more available, and it is replaced by other
printer, print another page using Chrome: either old printer is displayed
to end user or option "Save as PDF"

Expected Result: Have the option to get the default OS printer to use
instead of the old/missing one.

Actual Result: Old printer is displayed to end user or option "Save as PDF".

How frequently does this problem reproduce? Always

What is the impact to the user, and is there a workaround? If so, what is
it? When you need to replace printers in a network environment, there's no
way to flush out the printers 'cache' of registered printers at Chrome
browser.

Possible workaround are either use the DisablePrintPreview policy to force
Chrome to use the OS default printer or re-deploy Chrome using
master_preference file with printing.print_preview_sticky_settings (This
one haven't been tested)

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screen shot or
log if possible:

Some Chrome builds ago there was a Chrome flag called Printer Reset that
use to do exactly that, but is no longer available. I've attached a
screenshot of that flag. A setting to just flush cache would be also an
option.

akeel, the Hotlist-GoogleApps label is reserved for bugs that Google Apps
teams (Gmail, Calendar, Docs, etc) have asked us to fast track. Can you
please indicate which Google Apps this affects and why it's a priority to
be fixed?

This FR it's a priority to be added since there's an urgent need from
customer side to change the printer network and the users won't be able to
print unless they do it through ctrl+shift+P and use the OS default printer
instead of the old/missing one.

It's affect all Google Apps core services with the ability to print using
Chrome Browser (Mostly Docs and Gmail).

is this acceptable if we we just select new default OS printer when printer
from print_preview_sticky_settings is gone?

Sure, that would be a viable option since it would act, more or less, as
the former Chrome flag (Printer reset) as far as I understand, choosing the
default OS printer if the old one is missing.

Hi,
in my opinion Chrome should not save the last used printer at all. This is
very uncommon. Every other Windows application by default uses the default
printer as given by windows. Why does Chrome always saves the last-used
printer?

The problem is a bad user experience. People with Laptops often use the
Windows 7+ default option to change the default printer based on network
settings (WLAN). I do this. Windows automatically changes the default
printer from my office to my home printer if changing networks. All other
windows Apps automatically recognize this option.

But chrome ignores this and always chosses the last used printer. This
leads to the fact that you accidentally print to wrong printer. So you have
to delete print job, restart printing and so on.

Choosing a default printer is the responsibility of the Windows Operating
system, not the programs like browsers. Please change this.

At least make it behave like that: If Chrome recognizes that the underlying
default printer was changed by Windows itsself also do this change. If the
printer did not change, you can keep the current behaviour.

This "feature/bug" is driving me and my users crazy.

Chrome should absolutely not store the last used printer, and use the
system default.

That is why system defaults were created, right? So every application
DOESN'T store their own random setting with potential to cause more errors.

Or at least give us a flag to change this behavior. There used to be
the "Printer Reset" flag that fixed this bug, but that was removed and
the "feature/bug" remains.

Please make chrome honor the default printer and always select that as the
first selection.

I work at a law firm with two offices we have attorneys that move between
the offices. With Chrome when they change office they have to set their
default OS printer and then go into Chrome and change thier printer. The
extra step is a pain not a feature. Internet Explorer and FireFox select
the current OS default printer when launched and do not cache the recent
printer. Why was Chrome set up this way and what possible benefit comes
from this falsely perceived feature.

Please reinstate the "Printer Reset" flag so that old, invalid, or
changed-Windows-default-printer issues will not be an issue.

As mentioned above, a possible solution is to modify the
default "Preferences" file and completely remove
the "print_preview_sticky_settings" section. I've tested it and this does
work.

Is this ever going to be fixed? Or at least an option in Group Policy to
set the default printers on Chrome? Ignoring the native OS default printer
is not nice.
