New issue 580899 by
jholmer...@gmail.com: Chrome OS does not downmix
5.1/7.1 channel audio over HDMI
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=580899
Chrome Version: 47.0.2526.110 (64-bit)
Chrome OS Version: Platform 7520.67.0
Chrome OS Platform: Asus Chromebox CN60
Network info: Not applicable
Label: Cr-Internals-Media-Audio
Steps To Reproduce:
1. Plug Chromebox into TV with stereo speakers via HDMI
2. Load a video file with 5.1 or 7.1 channel audio in Google Chrome.
- Example:
http://falcon479.startdedicated.com/files/Hotel-Transylvania-2.mp4
- (For legal reasons, please do not share the above file for purposes
other than investigating this bug.)
3. Attempt to watch the video through Chrome's HTML5 video player
Expected Result:
Surround sound audio should be downmixed to 2.0 stereo so all channels are
audible
Actual Result:
Only the left and right channels are audible, the rest of the channels are
lost
How frequently does this problem reproduce?
Always reproducible with AAC 5.1 or 7.1 channel audio. Reproduced on two
different TVs, with multiple video files. Not tested with other audio
codecs.
I tested on a Macbook Pro via HDMI on one of the above TVs, with same video
file linked above, in Chrome 47 and 48. The audio was downmixed properly on
Chrome on OS X 10.11.
What is the impact to the user, and is there a workaround? If so, what is
it?
Movies with 5.1 or 7.1 channel audio are not watchable on a Chromebox
connected to a TV with stereo speakers (most of the dialogue is lost since
it is on the center channel). Workaround is to use a TV with surround sound
speakers (this is an expensive workaround).
