New issue 577533 by term...@gmail.com: Chrome standalone installer
(2016-01-12) returns "Unknown Installer Error"
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=577533

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:38.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/38.0

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. In Windows 7 x64 run the most recent ChromeStandaloneSetup.exe as admin
2. Message box shows 'Unknown Installer Error'

What is the expected behavior?

What went wrong?
I was able to reproduce this issue in a Windows 7 x64 VM. The installer was
downloaded from:
https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/desktop/index.html?system=true&standalone=1#eula
Both Google Inc. digital signatures are valid.

Did this work before? Yes Last installer .106 worked fine

Chrome version: <Copy from: 'about:version'> Channel: n/a

It doesn't seem limited to Windows 7 (x64). We're experiencing this issue
on multiple operating systems, including Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows
Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2012 R2.. All of
which are x64 variants.

Something for the devs:
The reason for the error is that, inside the executable file,
the "Gact2.0Omaha" signature (AFFILIATE_ID_MAGIC) is followed by a WORD
with the value zero. In this case, the error message is shown in the end.
However, this value is also zero with the previous installer version, but
maybe the check has changed.

In addition, the error number 0x80040750 is invovled. According to
https://github.com/google/omaha/blob/master/omaha/base/error.h
it means GOOPDATE_E_UNTAGGED_METAINSTALLER.

I think the installer is bad and they made a mistake somewhere. I've tried
it on several computers, from XP and up, some 32-bit and some 64-bit and it
doesn't work on any of them.

Problem solved in version 48.0.2564.82. Tried 32 bits version only.

I agree, I've also installed 48.0.2564.82 without a problem. This can be
closed, but I can't find a way to do that myself.
