New issue 518170 by bsm...@varrow.com: jnlp files are now showing with "
Always Open Files of This Type" grayed out
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=518170

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML,
like Gecko) Chrome/44.0.2403.130 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Access any JNLP file
2. Chrome downloads JNLP file as if any other resource
3. Chrome does not start Java
4. User must click on JNLP file to start Java and associated app

What is the expected behavior?
jnlp files should open automatically after choosing "Always open files of
this type"

What went wrong?
I was previously able to skip the "This type of file can harm your
computer" message after selecting the "Always open files of this type".

After the update on or around July 21, 2015 that did not work anymore.

Did this work before? Yes The previous version, before July 21, 2015

Chrome version: 44.0.2403.130 Channel: stable
OS Version: 10.0
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 18.0 r0

OK, so it is not just me. I am seeing the same lack of automatic behavior
as well. This started about 2-3 weeks ago , or so .

Having the same problem with UCS manager and Unisphere (EMC). Also with a
third party we use for RDP sessions.

Using Java 7.65, 32bit. It doesn't matter what version of Java and a
reinstall hasn't helped.

This happens in both Window 8.1 and 10.

Depending on Cisco and EMC we're limited with what version of Java will run
UCS Manager or Unisphere.

Hope that info helps ssamano!

Hi this is a big issue in our company. Is it a bug or wanted "feature"?
Thanks

previously i did not observe the "Save As" dialog box for downloading and
opening JNLP files. chrome used to auto download JNLP files without the
save as dialog.

Yes, a flag to let the user choose what they want would be a great option.
I searched for it but i didn't found anything.

This problem seems to get worse now that all jnlps are considered unsafe
(Keep/Discard prompt) and the AlwaysOpen option is disabled. uuhg. So
here is a workaround I wrote:

A site whitelist should be provided to allow auto start.

Seeing the similar behavior on the latest canary(49.0.2593.0) on Windows-7,
Mac OS 10.10.5 & Linux Ubuntu 14.04.

Assigning to asanka@ for more inputs and related work on Issue 461858.

It would be nice if browser vendors stop deciding for users what is or is
not safe. Users should ALWAYS have a choice as to whether or not they want
to open or save something. If a user is so inexperienced that they
foolishly decide to open something they should not have, that becomes their
problem. Hopefully they have a good virus scanner installed. In the case
of jnlp, which is an application, there should be an option to ALWAYS open
if that's what the user wants.

So in the latest production version (as of today), 47.0.2526.106m this bad
behavior continues to reproduce. Is Google considering this a bug or
expected behavior???

If this is expected behavior, I would like to know how to formally submit
an enhancement request to get this behavior changes ASAP.

Same behavior with the Avocent UMG 4000 IP KVM software that I have to
click about 70 times per day, It forces me to select "Keep Malware" so I
can download and run my Enterprise application manually instead of having
it automatically open like before.

On an air-gapped system with no internet connectivity at all. I wish the
developers would get their head around the fact that not everyone needs
protection from hack.com and much as they need to be able to use the
software on their Intranet.

You should never remove the users ability to make the software do what they
need - I am in the best position to decide what my security posture looks
like and what functionality I need. Maybe you should just fork the project
for Enterprise users and give us more granular options for our individual
needs.

We also need to have the possibility to autostart JNLP files! FireFox and
IE have no problem with this :-(

WTF, Google?!
Impossible to use Chrome in business environment anymore as Java is still
used everywhere! jnlp files is officially supported way of starting Java
apps, so why users must approve it every time?!

Since javaws already has a "Do you really want to run this" dialog, with
code-signing support so the user can verify the creator of the program
before running it, I can't imagine what threat scenario Google is thinking
of in which their devoid-of-useful-information "harm your computer" warning
is actually helping anybody.
