http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=309362

the automatic update process was failing for me completely. i then stupidly
uninstalled, and then did a fresh re-install of chrome. but it still didnt
solve the problem, as well as losing all bookmarks and extensions by
uninstalling and reinstalling, the automatic update process is still not
working, i am getting the same issue as the original poster.

every time i go to the "about" page, it says
"Nearly up to date! Relaunch Google Chrome to finish updating" whether i
click the relaunch button or just close chrome completely and restart it, i
always get the same message showing up on the "About" page...

Version 31.0.1650.63 m

i also tried creating a fresh profile via the instructions at

message

@kfserhan: Disable all your extensions & create a new profile and give a
try.

Also, could you please re-insall and do a fresh installation, let us know
the behavior. Also, if issue is still repro, please provide screen-cast.

Press the menu button (a stack of three horizontal lines) in the upper
right corner of the browser. > "Relaunch Chrome in windows 8 mode" > In the
bottom right corner is the status window with a message... click that >
update and relaunch

That worked for me. Maybe it will for you too.

Unable to repro the issue on win8 chrome version 33.0.1750.149 and
35.0.1891.2 canary. After clicking on "Nearly up to date, relaunch google

Not going to do a uninstall-reinstall anytime soon.
Still having this problem as of 33.0.1750.154 m.

Some thing unique to my system:
- I have the Cache and Media Cache symlinked to ramdisk
- I run portable versions of Stable, Beta and Dev to test extensions,
keeping the installed Chrome for non-dev activities
- I see 2 entries of "Google Chrome" in the 'Open with..' menu on
right-click of html file. On digging in to registry
(HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.htm\OpenWithProgids)
I found that theres 'ChromeHTML'
and 'ChromiumHTM.P2W3PO2WGHOLJQJ2EW7HNJLTPE'. Also littered around the
registry theres Chrome and Chromium stuff.

The problem disappeared!

Gone away with the problems I'm having with some Windows 8 Modern apps.
Highly possible that the cause is the RAM disk.

The RAM disk needs to emulate a hard drive completely for all to go
smoothly.

I got the clue here:
http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/38691-WARNING-Placing-Temporary-Internet-Files-on-RAM-disk-causes-some-Metro-apps-to-fail

Fixed the modern apps problem and also Chrome's problem.

This usually happens when you have other chrome windows or chrome apps
open. make sure you have all ties e.g external processes to chrome
terminated before you do a relaunch.

this fixed it for me anyways

Comment #20 on issue 309362 by megazzt: "Nearly up-to-date! Relaunch Google
Chrome to finish updating." message is not going away
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=309362

I have seen this problem twice, both times it happened under the following
circumstances:

1. The update came with a new chrome.exe.
2. A non-Google process had a handle open on chrome.exe such that it could
not be renamed to old_chrome.exe

When this happens the update process silently fails and the old version is
relaunched.

In both cases the culprit was SteamService.exe, the service helper process
for Steam which should be running as long as Steam is running (you might
have to kick off a game install if it is not running to force it to launch,
or just start the service). Not sure what it is doing, probably is a Steam
bug.

Still, Chrome should at least alert the user that another program is
blocking the Chrome update, and that a reboot should fix it (SteamService
does not appear to immediately open handles to chrome.exe on launch... not
sure what prompts it to do this).

@megazzt: if you have seen this recently, or if you see it again in the
future, could you locate your %TEMP$\chrome_installer.log file and attach
it to the bug? (If Chrome is installed under Program Files, the log file
will be found at C:\Windows\Temp\chrome_installer.log instead).

@robertsh I have not seen this recently but the file specified seems to
cover multiple installation logs (at least, the errors from them) and it
has errors indicating old_chrome.exe could not be removed on multiple
occasions. I have attached the full file.

bland.life: Chrome Portable is unsupported and is known to cause problems
with Google Chrome installations. Chrome Portable isn't distributed or
supported by Google, so there's not much we can do to help with problems it
causes.

My latest build of Chrome Portable (I'm the one who made it) removes the
need to hack the version number into the registry, but I don't think that
ever made it into the build PortableApps.com maintains. :(

So yeah, don't run Chrome and Chrome Portable at once. That setup is not
supported, only run one at once.

Chrome has built-in "profiles" support if you need to run two separate
Chrome profiles at once.
