Comment #56 on issue 196452 by
kingenko...@gmail.com: ARM Chromebook won't
I just bought my first Chromebook today, a Samsung series 3. I'm loving it
so far, but I wasn't happy to find out that it doesn't work very well with
my TV. Apart from surfing the web and bringing it on business trips I was
planning to use it for YouTube documentary's on my TV.
My TV is a LG 37LB2R, I have tried it with numerous other units (including
laptops) and haven't experienced any issues before. It's a 720p TV but it
does support higher resolutions (which of course will be down-scaled).
When I connect the CB to the TV with just a plain HDMI cable I get the
duplicated background picture. As told in this thread I can use ALT+F4
(full screen) to move the GUI to that screen. Dragging the minimized window
doesn't seem to work though. CTRL+F4 reports the "no matching resolution"
error. After removing the HDMI cable the CB crash and I have to turn it off
with the power button. I can also get the GUI on the TV by opening settings
and choosing it as the primary screen. This would be quite ok if it wasn't
for the following issues:
* Most of the bottom bar and other parts of the screen is shown outside the
TV boundaries, so I can't see the controls in YouTube fullscreen for
instance.
* The crashing is of course annoying.
* If I go to screen settings the resolution of the TV is reported as
1920x1080, though I guess it should be 1280x720? At least that's the native
resolution of the TV.
I also tried to hook up an active HDMI switch between the TV and the CB. It
works, if it's connected before boot (otherwise the CB won't notice the
connected TV at all). The reported resolution in the screen settings is
very uncommon though, I think it was 1280x960!? This switch works great and
I have used it with DVD-players, bluray-players, HTPC's, computers,
set-topboxes, XBox 360 etc. Less of the screen borders are hidden with the
switch though so over-all the result is better.
Final thoughts:
Why would anyone want to use both screens at the same time? I would prefer
if the screen on the CB would be turned off in order to save battery when I
use the TV. I would also like to be able to choose resolution myself in
order to get the best possible picture since the CB doesn't seem to get the
right resolution.
