Same problem for me. Used to run projector, now just the wall paper.
Ctrl+Maximize and same resolution mismatch error. Was planning to use
several chromebooks at tradeshows this summer and now that won't work...
fix please!

The Chromebook panel only supports one resolution, so it's usually not
possible to do mirroring unless your hdmi monitor happens to be the exact
same resolution. It's not something we can fix unless we do some sort of
software mirroring.

I see the wallpaper on the TV and I cannot move anything to the external
display. Before the beginning of March I would plug in the external display
and my Chromebook display would go dark and I could see m screen only on
the external display.

Now when I plug in I see only wallpaper on the external display and the
full screen on my Chromebook. I cannot move anything onto the external
display and the only thing that gets me a reaction on the external display
is when I try to use the setting menu to adjust resolution. When I play
with these settings I get the error message of no matching resolution.
Otherwise I get nothing.

I have tried rebooting with the connection in place and no change in
behavior.

Same thing for me as the person above. I tried to first boot up with the CB
connected and still only got the wallpaper. Then i tried to move the window
over to the TV screen and nothing happened. And anything I try also results
in the "no matching resolution" error. This is a problem that needs an
immediate fix

Just saying "doesn't work" won't give us much information. Please us
provide more information
such as

- Chrome/ChromeOS versions
- TV model and resolution it accepts. 1080p or 720p?
- How it's connected. Plain HDMI cable or through HDMI->DVI, etc.
- How it's not working. Can you move a mouse to another display? Or
does it freeze when you connect display?

Extended Desktop does work for TVs that I tested at least. However, we know
that there
are two separate but related issues:
a) Certain monitors whose native resolution isn't supported may not work
(screen stays blank)
b) ARM chromebook may freeze when you plug/unplug several times.

There is a workaround for a). Boot with your monitor connected.

Lastly, if you've got wallpaper on external display, but you still can't
use it,
please try ALT-Fullscreen. It'll swap the display and launcher will be
moved to the
external display/TV. If this still doesn't work, please let me know (with
all above information)

I attached the video what should happen when you have TV/external display.

Okay fair enough

Google Chrome version 25.0.1364.126
Platform 3428.193.0 (official build) stable-channel display
Firmware Google_snow.2695.114.0

TV model and resolution Sharp resolution it needs: 1024 x 768

Connected via HDMI VGA adapter with the USB connector

How it is not working. All I see is wallpaper on the external display. No
mouse. No windows. Only wallpaper. The only time I see anything is when I
play with the resolution settings and then I can see the box that comes up
telling me no resolution match.

Prior to the beginning of March all I had to do was connect and it worked.
If this never worked before that would be a different problem, but it was
working and now it does not.

I have booted with the monitor connected and I get the same result. Prior
to March sometimes when I would disconnect the Chromebook screen would
remain dark and I would have to reboot to get it back, but I could connect
to the external display.

I have tried the Alt-Fullscreen and I don't have any luck with that either.

I work in Cambridge, MA down the road from the Google offices. I would be
happy to show you in person what is happening if you would like to come by.

I cannot view the video. It is private and it won't let me log in.

Comment #29 on issue 196452 by j...@johara.net: ARM Chromebook won't mirror
For all of us who are not IT specialists, here is how to get around the
problem, at least on a Samsung Series 3 Chromebook. (Hopefully once
oshima's video is public, it will show this.)

When in you are in dual screen mode, with the wallpaper appearing on the
external screen, the external screen is to the left of the internal
screen. The way you move your browser "window" to that screen is by first
reducing the "window" from the default maximized size. You do this with
the square box near the top right corner of the screen and selecting either
the right or left "restore". Then move the browser window onto the
external screen by clicking on the top bar and dragging the window to the
left. If you only want to move one tab to the external screen you can just
click and drag the tab. This works when the browser "window" is maximized,
as long as more than one tab is open. Note that this only moves the browser
window to the other screen. The icons for apps and the time and control
stuff will remain at the bottom of the internal screen. Also the pointer
will move from one screen to the other, just remember the external screen
is to the left of the internal screen.

For the IT specialists:
I don't believe mirroring ever worked on my Samsung Series 3 (Model
XE303C12-A01US). The dual screen behavior changed with the stable channel
install of Google_Snow.2695.114.0 The difference is that previously when
an external display was attached it triggered dual display with the
external display as the primary so what was on the internal screen "jumped"
there and the wallpaper was all that was left on the secondary internal
display. Now the internal display remains primary. It showed be trivial to
restore this functionality.

There is a bug that frequently crashes the system when you try to switch a
display to primary from chrome://settings/display but it does not do it all
the time. It doesn't matter which display is the one being switched.

Thank you all for reports, and apologies for trouble. I also made change to
video settings, so
you should be able to see the video.

First of all, whether or not it's easy to fix depends on the cause of this
problem, and we're still
investigating it.

#28
> TV model and resolution Sharp resolution it needs: 1024 x 768
> Connected via HDMI VGA adapter with the USB connector

Thank you. this is really useful. We'll try to reproduce the issue with
similar settings.

A few more questions:
Can you still use internal display?
Does your mouse stuck in internal display? or can you move your mouse to
external display?
If you drag a window, do you see "phantom window" on external display like
in my video?

> #30 jo...@johara.net
> The way you move your browser "window" to that screen is by first
> reducing the "window" from the default maximized size.

You cannot drag/move window that is in maximized/fullscreen state.
You first need to "unmaximize" in order to be able to move the window. This
isn't specific to dual dislay, nor
chrome/chromeos. This is same for most of operating system.
(mac/windows/inux).

I can see how this can be confusing for some people. +kuscher for his
opinion about UI.

That's being said, from your description, this seems to be working as
expected, except

> There is a bug that frequently crashes the system when you try to switch
> a display to primary from chrome://settings/display

I assume by "crash", did you mean freeze? (sorry I forgot to include this
case in my #26)
This is clearly a bug and we will investigate it.

Once external display is set to be primary, it will become primary when you
connect your external display.

> I don't believe mirroring ever worked on my Samsung Series 3 (Model
> XE303C12-A01US).

Mirroring depends on external display's capability and doesn't always work.
This is unchanged and has been the same.

Thanks again for reports.

Comment #32 on issue 196452 by j...@johara.net: ARM Chromebook won't mirror
Thanks for all the efforts.

By "crash" I meant the displays go black and the Chromebook then reboots,
the same as it does when restarted after a shutdown. It doesn’t happen all
the time, but it does seem more likely to happen if the display being
selected as primary has nothing on it except the wall paper.

As I mentioned in my comment you do not have to "Unmaximize" (the term on
the Chromebook is "restore" which is borrowed from MS Windows) if instead
of dragging the window you just drag a single tab, but you can't drag a tab
if only one is open.

Well my CB just updated this morning when I went to check the latest info
on this thread.

Prior to updating:
Version 25.0.1365.126
Platform 3428.193.0(Official Build) stable-channel display
Firmware Google_snow.2695.114.0

After updating this morning:

Version 25.0.1364.173
Platform 3428.210.0 (Official Build) stable-channel daisy
Firmware Google_Snow.2695.114.0

- TV model and resolution it accepts. 1080p or 720p? -LG HDTV that accepts
1080p

- How it's connected. Plain HDMI cable or through HDMI->DVI, etc. - plain
HDMI cable

- How it's not working. Can you move a mouse to another display? Or
does it freeze when you connect display? -

Only wallpaper is shown on HDTV. I first did alt-fullscreen and got the "no
matching" resolution message. Then I read here that the TV is workable
space and I "unmaximized" my window on CB display and attempted to drag it
to TV screen that is workable space and it did not display on there as it
did in the YouTube video link you posted above. I also tried to boot up the
CB with it connected to the TV as suggested above also to get the matching
resolution and still got the same non-working results.

Could you please describe how it behaved instead? Could you move your mouse
pointer
to TV's screen? Can you check chrome://settings/display and see if displays
are laid
out correctly as you expected?

As I mentioned earlier, "mirroring" requires supported resolution and won't
work with
many TV displays. This hasn't changed. What has been changed is that we now
show the message
instead of simply ignoring.

I've got a presentation in Chicago next week, which I planned on using my
Chromebook/HDMI-VGA adapter for, and have tried all sorts of combos to get
the thing to mirror... but the best I can do is non-mirror.. and even that
sometimes can be hit or miss.

So the prez has been converted from Slides to Powerpoint and thumb drived
in case of total disaster.

I guess the beauty of open code however is that there is always the chance
the problem may be fixed, coded, and downloaded when I open up my
Chromebook on Thursday in Chicago.

Prior to last week when I attached my Samsung Chromebook via HDMI cable to
LG 32LD450 32-Inch 1080p 60 Hz LCD HDTV the same screen automatically
showed on both devices (although the tv screen did not fit perfectly.)

When I tried this on March 30 all I saw on the TV was wallpaper. Following
suggestions above (using Cntrl + fn key), I was able to get the computer
screen to appear on the TV but the mouse cursor frequently disappeared,
requiring unplugging and replugging of the HDMI cable .. until eventually
it did not work at all (and I quit.)

I ran into the same cursor issue in a presentation in Chicago. The AV guys
at the hotel showed me how to get the cursor back by slowly dragging left
to right from the left of the touchpad and then onto the touchpad.... They
told me it was screen resolution mismatch-curve or something.
They actually were excited to work with the Chromebook/Projector setup
because of the HDMI... They told me Macbook Air presenters the week before
were really screwed because of micro dvi out incompatability. They asked
me the price on the Chromebook, and I think they may be out buying one for

Comment #56 on issue 196452 by kingenko...@gmail.com: ARM Chromebook won't
I just bought my first Chromebook today, a Samsung series 3. I'm loving it
so far, but I wasn't happy to find out that it doesn't work very well with
my TV. Apart from surfing the web and bringing it on business trips I was
planning to use it for YouTube documentary's on my TV.

My TV is a LG 37LB2R, I have tried it with numerous other units (including
laptops) and haven't experienced any issues before. It's a 720p TV but it
does support higher resolutions (which of course will be down-scaled).

When I connect the CB to the TV with just a plain HDMI cable I get the
duplicated background picture. As told in this thread I can use ALT+F4
(full screen) to move the GUI to that screen. Dragging the minimized window
doesn't seem to work though. CTRL+F4 reports the "no matching resolution"
error. After removing the HDMI cable the CB crash and I have to turn it off
with the power button. I can also get the GUI on the TV by opening settings
and choosing it as the primary screen. This would be quite ok if it wasn't
for the following issues:

* Most of the bottom bar and other parts of the screen is shown outside the
TV boundaries, so I can't see the controls in YouTube fullscreen for
instance.

* The crashing is of course annoying.

* If I go to screen settings the resolution of the TV is reported as
1920x1080, though I guess it should be 1280x720? At least that's the native
resolution of the TV.

I also tried to hook up an active HDMI switch between the TV and the CB. It
works, if it's connected before boot (otherwise the CB won't notice the
connected TV at all). The reported resolution in the screen settings is
very uncommon though, I think it was 1280x960!? This switch works great and
I have used it with DVD-players, bluray-players, HTPC's, computers,
set-topboxes, XBox 360 etc. Less of the screen borders are hidden with the
switch though so over-all the result is better.

Final thoughts:
Why would anyone want to use both screens at the same time? I would prefer
if the screen on the CB would be turned off in order to save battery when I
use the TV. I would also like to be able to choose resolution myself in
order to get the best possible picture since the CB doesn't seem to get the
right resolution.

I tried yesterday with another LG 26" LCD TV (old one, from 2006, with DVI

the TV. All I can see on the TV is a colored line in the top, the rest of
the display is completely black. Otherwise it seems to behave as my other
TV, I can use ALT+F4 to move the GUI but obviously I can't see anything.

I've had this Samsumg Chromebook 303C and the user experience is getting
WORSE over time.

I, too, struggle to get an external LCD over HDMI to work. My 46" SONY
Bravia used to work, now it doesn't.

If anyone of importance at Google ever reads these: Shame on you. You're
selling these things at RETAIL now. These devices are not "geeks-only" toys
anymore. I purchased mine at Best Buy and the sales guy tried to talk me
out of buying it because of all of the returns they're getting. I assured
him I knew what I was buying. I've even seen the Acer Chromebook at
Walmart, now.

If Google wants their Cloud Computer devices to take hold, this will not be
acceptable. It borders on the embarrassing.

Hi, I turned off my new ACER Chromebook, plugged in my HDMI cable and
rebooted the computer. In the settings box above the clock it showed the
SONY Bravia tv communicating with my Chromebook. It asked if I wanted to
start mirroring and I answered yes. Now, my Chromebook is mirrored on my
Bravia tv. If I unplug the HDMI cable the connection is stopped, but when I
plug the HDMI back in it asks again for the mirroring request. No further
reboot. This has solved my previous issue...

When I first purchased and tried to use an external screen (tv) to view
video it worked but was very difficult to actually figure out. Anyway,
last night I tried to view a movie I purchased from Google Play and it
constantly crashed when trying to view on my Pioneer Elite TV. I thought
maybe it was a an issue with Google Play so I tried Netflix and same
effect.... crash! This functionality needs to be restored as it is one of
the reasons why I made my purchase.

I am having this same issue with build 26.

Version 26.0.1410.57
Platform 3701.81.2 (Official Build) stable-channel daisy
Firmware Google_Snow.2695.117.0

I am using the following TVs:
Sony Bravia S-Series KDL-32S5100 32-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV
Sony BRAVIA KDL60NX720 60-inch 1080p 3D LED HDTV with Built-in WiFi

HDMI cable only, direct to TV, no adapters.

Mirroring mode always gives the error "Can't duplicate images on attached
monitors. No matching resolution found." even though my TV supports the
Chromebook's resolution (though it is not the same natively).

Extended desktop works sometimes. Sometimes I loose the mouse when
connecting HDMI and have to reboot. Other times the Chromebook freezes and
I can still move the mouse, but nothing else responds (Issue
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=220033 claims this only
lasts 10s). Other times I can drag minimized windows or tabs over to the
external display and use them. But then when I unplug the Chromebook
freezes and must be rebooted (Issue
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=219947 fixed in build
27 beta).

There are also bugs with hooking up projectors (Issue
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=220322) which I need to
do for a presentation at Google I/O Extended next week.

My presentation about Chromebooks isn't going to shine a very positive
light on them if I have to reboot multiple times in the presentation or
cannot get it to work on the projector.

I'm also having this issue. I can't mirror to a monitor or to a TV.
Plugging a HDMI cable into my 1080p Panasonic TV does nothing other than
bringing up the error message about resolution and sometimes crashing the
chromebook. The TV stays black, no signal at all. I get no wallpaper on
either TV or Monitor (that I've tried). My chromebook's screen sometimes
resizes and I loose the menu and cursor, although I can drag the cursor
back onto the chromebook screen if I track left, so I assume it thinks its
extending the desktop to the right. Hard booting while plugged in does not
work. ALT Full screen does nothing other than make my chromebooks screen
reset randomly. The HDMI cable works fine with a PS3, so its not that.

I can't believe this problem has been around for 2 months with no
resolution, what is going on at Google?

CB: Samsung ARM XE0303C12

My screen cracked, and I cannot see anything.
I can only connect to my TV, and alt + maximize does not make the TV
primary display.
ctrl + maximize gives me an error that resolution is not the same.

I then disassembled the screen and removed it, disconnecting it from CB
completely, hoping that HDMI will take over and become the primary display,
but no luck. CB still things it has the screen...

Any way to make HDMI primary in hardware (completely disabling the LCD
screen)?

If you noticed when you drag the cursor to the right and off the screen in
dissapears from chromebook and appears on the external monitor. Since it is
operating off split screens instead of duplicating the images try using the
(split-screen) method , simply click on the tab you want to display to the
external monitor source and drag it over to the right until it appears on
the display and drop it there... Simple As That.

I have a $249 Samsung Chromebook and a Philips 46" LED TV, resolution 1920
x 1080p.

When I connect the TV and the chromebook using a plain HDMI cable, two
things happen on the TV screen: First, the automatic resolution goes to 960
x 540p on the TV screen (e.g. extremely poor quality). Second, the TV
screen does not appear proportionately (e.g. the icons on the toolbar at
the bottom of the screen do not show -- this happens at
top/bottom/left/right of screen). When I manually adjust the screen size to
fit the parameters of the TV screen, I click OK but nothing changes.

On the chromebook screen, I get the message "Can't duplicate images on
attached monitors. No matching resolution found."

I have tried every possible solution on this message board (booting with
the TV monitor connected, Ctrl+Maximize, etc.) without success.

The funny thing is that when I connect the chromebook to my neighbor's
monitor (a 32" Vizio 1080p LCD TV), everything works fine.

Any solutions available to get the right resolution and the right screen
dimensions on the TV monitor and the mirror function to work? Thanks!

Regarding Comment #90, I updated the OS to Version 29.0.1520.2 dev. Once
connecting to the TV monitor, I select the "overscan" option under "manage
displays" and the screen automatically adjusts to the size of the external
monitor -- this is a great improvement.

However, the resolution on the external monitor continues to register
as "960x540 (best)," which is a locked value. Given that others are able to
get the external monitor to have a resolution of 1920X1080, is there a
manual way to override this automatic setting or a planned fix in an
upcoming OS Version? Thanks.

With regards to comments 99 and 100, please contact Google Support to voice
your concerns. Putting that information in a bug tracker report is
counter-productive and causes these types of issues to get fixed slower or
be lost in all of the complaining.

The situation with display mirroring has gotten a lot of attention over the
last couple of months and things are much better in the Beta channel. The
work however is not done and is not available in the Release channel. It
looks like the last major issue will be wrapping up in the next couple of
weeks and then should find its way into the Beta channel sometime in July.

#104, you probably missed the "If you have owner permissions" comment
and "Learn about owner permissions" link. Basically, the first user
registered on the device is the owner. If you can't log in as that user,
you can follow the links to "clear your local user data"
(http://support.google.com/chromeos/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=183084), and
the first user that registers after that will be the owner.

Display mirroring works on the current Dev channel, but please note that
Dev channel is not stable, i.e. you might experience more crashes if you
switch to it. Also, switching back to Stable channel is not as easy - if
you just change the combo-box value, you will be auto updated only when a
Stable version newer than your Dev version will be released. To force
return to Stable channel you'll have to recover your device from USB stick.
The instructions are here:
http://support.google.com/chromeos/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1080595.

^^ Exactly the same for me using an LG 620TV ^^ blank 'no signal' on TV,
when turn TV on it makes chromebook adjust screen so cable works okay but
can't get anything on TV at all.

I can only assume this may be a resolution issue, maybe it doesn't output
at 1080p and therefore doesn't 'understand' the signal. (sorry i'm not that
technical!)

suspect I could try any number of TVs and monitors and it would do the same

I am extremely un-technical (which is why I bought a chromebook). My HDMI
to HDMI 1080 TV connection used to work fine, now there is no signal. My
housemate's laptop works fine.

When shall we expect a fix for this as it appears to have been a problem
since March? Or should I just take mine back as I feel it has been mis-sold
to me, and as part of my consumer rights within the UK I am able to return
if the product does not fit the seller's promises.

The comments in this bug diverged into 2 issues:
1. Display mirroring is not available
2. External TV/display is blank

For the second issue, one possible cause is a regression in interlaced
modes support.
Both these issues should be fixed in 29.

I came to this thread originally because I was trying unsuccessfully to
mirror my chromebook on a brookstone pocket projector. I have the $249
Samsung.

Last Tuesday (I believe) I received an update to 29 on the beta channel. On
Wednesday evening I was setting up to present at a meeting and I was just
going to use extended screen mode. I hit the wrong shortcut to switch
primary screens, and my chromebook started mirroring.

So, 29 is available on the beta channel and may fix your mirroring issue
(it fixes mine)

Thanks very much for finally getting this fix. I've been running the Beta
29 release and it does seem to fix the issue. Thanks again, my Chromebook
is now much more useful than it was before!

I switched from a srable 28 to a beta 29 last night. Before I switched, I
was able to connect and watch videos on my TV using the ALT + Full Screen
trick. Now, my Samsung Series 3 hangs and the tv goes blank when I connect
the hdmi cable. I tried turning both off and on in various orders, but got
the same results. I sure hope this gets fixed with the "stable 29" release!

My samsung chromebook isn't able to connect to the TV. The display
settings do not allow me to select either mirror or make primary options as
they are greyed out and unavailable. I'm not sure how to fix this - please
can you help. It used to work fine from an older laptop. Man thank.

IT WORKED! Thanks for help here, the advice from #26 osh...@chromium.org
DID IT.

Had the same problem as most - just the wallpaper, no reactions by
mouseclicks. But pressing ALT & FULLSCREEN key (line on the top, the one
with arrows in screen) like oshima adviced make it work.

Thanks a lot
