ofallonmobuilding1, someone did indeed delete you attachment, but I'm not
sure who. In any case, I can still see it, and it agrees with r3rek's--in
both cases there are error logged:

Failed to read message header, read returned -1

r3rek, can you confirm that the older, 39.x release also worked for you?

One thing you could both try is installing the current 42.x pre-release;
you can download it from
http://dl.google.com/dl/chrome-remote-desktop/chromeremotedesktophost-42.0.2311.4.msi.
We haven't made any changes specifically to address this issue, but I'd
like to know whether or not it still affects the upcoming release.

I just tried the pre-release and it is unfortunately the same for me. Shows

@jamiewalch

Just tried version 39. Doesn't work, it just goes into offline in the list
after I activate the remote connections on the host. Actually, I don't
thing it ever worked on this PC and can't understand why :-/

Been experiencing this same issue since Friday, Feb 13th.

If I install remoting_host.exe version 39.0.2171.46 on the Host, we can see
and access it but says "out-of-date". Then automatically updates a few
hours later making the host unreachable again.

We have many Chromebook users that have not been able to work remotely for
almost 1 month!

Thanks.

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=464044

The error message "Failed to read message header, read returned -1" in the
logs doesn't seem to be related to the problem. It comes from the native
messaging host whenever the native messaging process is shut down, e.g.
when the app is closed.

Logs show that the host loads config, fetches authentication tokens, and
then never succeeds connecting XMPP to talk.google.com. Before M41 release
the host was connecting to talk.google.com on port 5222, now it connects on
port 443. If it was working before and then stopped it means that the
firewall on the network that the host is connected to blocks
talk.google.com:443, but not talk.google.com:5222 .

Re-opening this since it seems there's something strange going on on port
443; I wonder if there may be some enterprise or ISP level protocol
sniffing going on? Except I don't think XMPP vs HTTPS would be detectable,
since both start off w/ TLS?

Another possibility is that some AV software basically MitMs the local
network stack, adding its own certificates to the OS store so that browsers
will trust it - cert pinning in the host would spot that and abort the
connection, IIRC.

If there was some kind of crapware installing local certs and MitM'ing
connection then it would also break all https connections in chrome to
*.google.com, and then host registration would fail as well, so I doubt
that's the problem here.

I suspect the issue here is that the current version of the host (and
client) uses fake-TLS and the firewall doesn't like that. This was fixed
recently, see bug 459756. So if this is the problem in this case it should
work properly in the M43 release.

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=464044

Good day dear all,

Apologies for not posting my issue related to this CRD thing here at first
time, but i only have found this forum today. Bellow there is a paste of my
original post in productforums.google.com, which did not return any valid
reply from support team.

The company i work for was one of the first ones to acquire the full google
suite, that includes the corporate Gmail domain (@tensator.com).
I have been using Chrome Remote Desktop App on the enterprise Corporate
scenario for about 4 months now, adding and remote controlling dozens of
remote hosts, and i was very happy with the stability and ease of use it
offers.
I had one issue 2 months ago, when a few hosts came offline (grayed out)
on the RD app hosts list. The issue was that even though i uninstall and re
install the app on the grayed remote hosts, they would never again be seen
as online to the other hosts. After some search, i read somewhere on this
forums other users reporting the same issue, and telling that what could
cause it was the fact that they were using corporate google accounts as
user. I have gone physically to all the remote hosts site locations i could
not access anymore, and remote accessed all the hosts that were still
showing as online, and linked them to this gmail account i am using now.
All hosts become online, stable and accessible for around 1 month.

3 days ago, without any modification from my side on the software, OS or
Networks of the hosts, all the hosts i have with chrome remote desktop
connection become as offline and grayed out, showing a (OUT OF DATE)
message, even though they are all online, accessible from and to the
internet, with the latest version of the app installed (nov. 2014...), with
the latest version of Google Chrome installed. A good percentage of this
hosts are not behind any hard of soft firewall, have windows firewall
service disabled as well.

I tried on the hosts i could access physically:

Disabled and re enabled remote connections
Uninstalling and re installing the Google Chrome Remote Desktop App
Uninstalling and re installing Google Chrome
Windows updates
Creating a dummy gmail account and adding the hosts to it
Creating a passphrase to encrypt the data of user account that controls the
hosts on the Advanced Sync Settings

Despite all this modifications i have done, ALL the hosts are still grayed
out as offline, even though i know they are online. The only hosts i can
see always online, even after i change account owner email, is a Ubuntu
Server...
This is Bizarre and is taking my professional productivity bellow to a
dangerous level, as i am getting hit with support calls from hosts i cannot
reach physically. Everything related to my work is pilling up, as i greatly
rely on Chrome remote desktop app to accomplish my day to day tasks...

Please help!

Best regards

Use port 5222 for XMPP connection from Me2Me host.

Connection on port 443 may be redirected through proxy. Proxied connections
do not work in the service process
(see bug 467960). This is a temporary workaround for that
issue.

Hi there,

Confirmed!! All the gray offline users are back online after uninstall of

Lets see if all the hosts now stay online and reachable with stability.

#33, is there any reason that version isn't linked to in the "Out of Host"
section of the Help page?

The reason I ask is because I installed Chrome Remote Desktop on a new
desktop this afternoon and it installed the "out of date" version 42.
Using the Help page was of little use since it just links to the previous
version.

Having the same issue as jricco. Just update chrome and installed remote

Work computer is behind firewall. Does the remote assistance use different

I'm having the same issue with only one (Win7) computer of several I access
using CRD. As soon as CRD is installed on this computer and enabled it
shows the computer available, but if close the CRD window and restart it
the computer is shown as offline. This only happens with this one computer
and all ports are confirmed open. It worked previously using CRD but has
not for some months now (not sure which version worked). I've tried
uninstalling and reinstalling using the older MSI files in this thread
without success. I can get to the computer using other systems (e.g.
GoToMyPC) but CRD fails to run and continuously shows this one computer
as "offline."

I just ran into this issue tonight while attempting to install CRD on an
Ubuntu box. I noticed my main computer (Windows 10) was showing up as
offline when I was staring right at the computer. I attempted to fix the
issue by removing the authentication and then reauthorizing i. System
showed up as online on it's own CRD window, but when looked at from a
secondary device it shows up as offline. After closing and reopening CRD
on the problem system I noticed it was showing itself as offline now as
well. I completely uninstalled CRD from the problem system and
reinstalled. System again shows as offline on secondary devices and
offline on itself only after CRD window is closed and reopened. I have
attached a .etl file taken during a CRD stop/start.

I submitted a bug report but I am adding my voice to this discussion.

I have only one computer that I need this to work on and on Tuesday
everything was fine, albeit the host saying it was out of date we could
connect to it.

Yesterday began the host computer saying that it is offline. I have been
through this whole thread and tried all the different versions from
39.0.2171.46 up to 44.0.2403.25. I also before this re-downloaded the
chromeremotedesktophost.msi manually from the help page and uninstalled
manually from the Control Panel. Beyond that I have also removed everything
related to CRD, signed out of the browser and signed back in, added CRD
back to Chrome and installed the chromeremotedesktophost that downloads
automatically as part of this process.

The only thing in common with each of these troubleshooting steps is that
after installing the host service the computer will show online on the
host, but if I refresh or try accessing it from the other computer, the
host computer shows offline since the time of the host service
installation. I also get the "this computer is currently shared under a
different account" message but this computer has only ever been set up with
one specific Google account.

I'm hoping that since this thread has the most recent replies we might be
able to get a better fix soon. Thanks for all of the hard work.

I experienced the same problem. I have 3 remote computer registered on CRD.
Only one pc always grayed out and I can't connect to the PC.

When I install CRD there are two accounts on local machine and I remove one
after the installation.

After reading messages above
(https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=464044#c50) I restored
remove account back and now the grayed item changed to black and I connect
to the PC.

There may be some logic in CRD which checks original account configurations.

Hope this helps.
