New issue 164300 by jinsuk...@google.com: Launch Chrome on Android in
Fullscreen via load URL intent
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=164300

Feature request - in order for web apps to act like native ones, Chrome on
Android needs to be able to start in fullscreen mode when launched via URL
intent.

Note that JS fullscreen API ('tab' fullscreen) cannot be used for this
situation as a solution, since it is not permitted to enter fullscreen when
the html page is loaded ( security reasons). Handling it at intent level
(and thus using 'browser' fullscreen) will be more appropriate.

It will be better if the visual UI elements of Chrome are hidden as much as
possible upon launching as this will make the web apps look more like
native ones.

Pending prototype implementation of the full screen support but we will
likely have to address security concerns that are likely to be triggered in
supporting this.

This mode also needs to hide on-screen system soft keys (menu, back, home)

If the user is on a website, they can (after staring, Saving, going into
bookmarks, pressing and holding - 7 unintuitive clicks in total)
eventually "Add to Home screen".

The use case for "adding to home screen" implies that they want to use the
app on its own and regularly, so the presence of the address bar is in my
opinon unnecessary and takes up too much room for what is probably an
immersive experience. I cannot see a security issue as the user has made a
decision to save to home screen and therefore is confident that the website
is OK. An additional dialog could be included when adding to ask if the
user wants it in full screen mode? ios has the head metatag <meta
name="apple-mobile-web-app-capable" content="YES" /> which flags the mode
which the home screen app is to be opened. So two points really:

1. Seven is too many clicks to "Add to Home Screen".
2. When launching from the home screen, it should remove the address bar.

This is an important feature that let's the Android system down. With
HTML5 Apps proving themselves to work well on iOS it's time they looked
nice on Android too...

The new chrome 'full screen' implementation doesn't really work when trying
to create an immersive web app experience on Android. Having an address bar
re appear whenever the user scrolls up looks bad.

Apple's implementation of apple-mobile-web-app-capable works really well
for creating an immersive web app experiance, and the Firefox OS
implementation of all websites added to the homescreen (a minimal
navigation panel at the bottom of the screen, excluding an address bar)
works really well.

@klobag: If it's not initiated by an intent, then how would you suggest
this full screen mode is initiated?

Is the new "Application shortcut",
https://developers.google.com/chrome/mobile/docs/installtohomescreen,
satisfy this?
