Encounter this same issue. First time you try to save something, takes a
long time for the save file dialog to appear. Subsequent times, save file
dialog appears quickly.

Thought it was something with mapped networked drives but removed all the
mappings.

IE, Firefox and Safari work correctly.

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/535.2 (KHTML,

Clean up your downloads folder!
I had the same problem and it was taking up to a full minute for my save
dialog to open. After deleting or moving over 1,000 files my save-as time
is completely normal.

Unfortunately this does not help at all in my case. Did you perhaps change
something else as well? (Quite apart from the fact that it should not be
nessesary to clean my download folder. Other browsers don't have an issue
with the size of my download folder. Why should Chrome?

Just chiming in with the same issue. I believe it might have something to
do with the jungle Disk I use for work as my client drive. It might be
taking it's time to contact the cloud service there but I have doubts to
that end too since none of the other browsers I use have this issue, and I
use them all for web development to check browser compatibility.
Additionally, the service is seriously fast with it's caching, only with
huge files have I noticed a delay. Also, I've had jungle disk on this
laptop since day 1 and chrome has been my primary browser. This issue
didn't appear until some time later which lead to think it was cache but...
I've cleared cache, cleared tmp files, cleared history, cleared cookies.
Done all I can to get some speed up on that initial download click. I've
also set chrome to ask me every time where I want to download the file to.
I don't use the download folder because as others have said it tends to get
full of crap awfully fast. I prefer to put things right where they belong
instead of the catch-all downloads folder. This is on a WIN7 Pro machine
fwiw. Plenty of horsepower to run photoshop and friends. I'm 100% sure it's
not hardware slowdown. Thanks!

I deleted my previous comment because it occurred to me while writing it
that I had never run CCleaner which is a great utility for clearing out old
caches and whatnot. After I ran it and did a restart my save as dialogue
opens right away in chrome. If you are encountering this problem I
encourage you to check out CCleaner. (this is in no way an advert, if you
have another utility that does this function, whatever floats your boat...
this just happens to be the one I've been using for the better part of 5

This has recently started happening for me on Windows 8, and it's

Happening for me as well. I am running the latest version of chrome on
Windows 8 64-bit. Started happening probably about a month ago. The only
addons I have enabled are ghostery (and I've just disabled the google docs
addon and will let you know if this fixes it).

I'm still having this problem since my last reply too. I am still
occasionally clearing out caches and junk with a 3rd party utility and it
runs pretty normal for 2-3 days before it gets bogged down. I'm actually
wondering if it might have something to do with my JungleDisk cloud drive.
Perhaps when the save action starts it polls available drives and since one
of my drives is on a server off in a rackspace data center somewhere maybe
it takes longer to reach it than local drives. Anyone else having this
problem also have mounted a drive attached to cloud storage? I will try to
experiment with it myself but it's a pain since I need that drive for work.

Same problem for me. It's been going on for about 6-8 months. I'm on
Windows 7 64, Chrome is up to date, and I clear my cache pretty regularly.
I hate to do this, because I've loved Chrome for a long time...but I think

Shame on Google to not fixing this issue for ages!

It is definitely something with Chrome, because no other programs do it.
Sometimes the delay for initial save dialog is several minutes. I almost
always try to repeat the action, if I was not clicking on save properly,
and then 2 or 3 dialogs open at once. It seems like Chrome is searching for
mounted network drives or whatever, but it makes no sense to do it, because
the save path is always the last used (because of my settings - to always
ask for destination folder). And it is local folder in almost all cases.

27.0.1453.116 - just going to update, but without false illusions that
anything is going to be fixed...

I have run into this issue on multiple windows systems.

I suspect it is related to the number of files in the downloads folder.
Initially downloads were taking ~45s to start. After deleting all files in
my downloads folder (roughly 200 files) downloads now start in under a
second.

to finally open (the window pops up immediately, but it doesn't get

I started having this probelm after we installed a NAS in our home network.
While it is running, the dialogue opens immediately. If it is switched off,

Ditto. It also seems to take extremely long for a file to "populate" in
the file selector once selected. This is typically instantaneous.

Same (25 second delay before save) problem on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with Chrome
35; everything works OK with Firefox 30.

Cleaning Downloads folder is no help.

Computer is on isolated network (with access to our intranet, and no access

has to do with mapped network drives. I know this because I can reconnect
my company's VPN and Chrome starts working again perfectly. Terribly

I have this exact same issue. Clearing the download folder has no effect. I
tried clearing Chrome's settings, and even a clean install and the problem
still occurs. It's very annoying. It only happens in Chrome. IE and Firefox
are both okay. Also, I don't have any network drivers... Does anyone have

Alright, after trying all sorts of fixes, I was finally able to figure out
what was causing the issue for me. I had previously checked off IPv6 of my
ethernet connection for configuring a specific device, and I left it off (I
had only IPv4 turned on). This is what was causing the problem. After
enabling IPv6, closing and re-opening Chrome, I'm glad to say the problem
is finally gone. I hope this helps someone out. Or at least make sure you
check your ethernet settings because that proves Chrome can have some
really strange behavior based on that, which apparently should have nothing
to do with. I even turned IPv6 off again just to make sure and I could
replicate the problem again.

IPv6 enablement did not seem to change anything for me. Still slow file
dialogs (both browse for file to upload, or browse for location to save
as). This is not consistent, some times it works fast later goes into super
slow mode again. Slow I mean it could be 30 seconds, could be 5 minutes
until dialog opens. Sometimes I even forget which site it needed it for
when it suddenly shows up.

I use Chrome with a lot of sessions and many tabs (up to 100 tabs). I have
been using it like that for years and problem started happening only in
recent few months.

Hello,

When I'm using chrome and try to attach a file from my computer in any
website, I have to wait for about 10-20 seconds for the file dialog starts
to show and the navigation inside of it is extremely slow. This started
today after update my windows 8 x64 to windows 8.1 x64.

To solve the problem I tried:
- uninstall chrome and install again
- Reset chrome definitions
- disable all extensions
- try to attach file in incognito mode
- clear all data
- use basic html gmail.
- run as administrator

Nothing seems to work. I noticed that now the file dialog is opening
pointing to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\38.0.2125.111
and it used to point to My documents folder or the last folder I have
accessed.

The first file dialog after a reboot or SO initialization works perfectly,
but after that the problem starts to occurr.

This issue is only happening for chrome.

I will try to update flash player and visual C++ Redistributed to if it
works

Any other ideias?

Wow, I just tried installing the 64 bit version, and suddenly all is
perfect. I tried everything else mentioned here at one point too. It's
not just that it updated my profile because it's using the same profile as
before.

I wonder if it's an optimization problem with version mismatch. If you
have 64 bit windows, make sure you've installed the 64 bit version.

You can tell what version you have by looking at your task manager. Under
processes, if Chrome has *32 next to it, you know you're running the 32 bit
version. The 64 bit version doesn't have a version designation next to it.

I only recently started having this problem - but it is still happening for

Same thing for me, save as requester takes forever to open, Win 8.1, Chrome
39.0.2171.95 m. Obviously been a bug for a while now, and no effort made to
fix it.

As someone has previously mentioned I figure it has something to do with

Hi,

this has been driving me mad for a few weeks. I have unistalled chrome and
reinstalled but the same result. Then I tried firefox and found the same
effect, so then I thought it might be a windows thing and found this...

"If You disable the Client for Microsoft Networks in properties of Local
Area Connection - the issue disappears (maybe only in my case)."

Not sure what the knock on effect of that might be up now my files appear
immediately when i try and upload them!

A few things that could be causing delays with the "Save file" dialog are:

- Windows Shell extensions.
- Memory pressure (not having enough memory).
- Having mounted network devices that are slow or disconnected.
- Malware and other badware.

Often there isn't much that Chrome can do, and you are likely to see this
kind of problem crop up with other applications on your system as well. If
the problem is reproducible, you can try producing a profile dump:

1. Visit chrome://profiler on a new tab.
2. Click the little "[snapshots]" link on the top right.
3. Click the "Add snapshot" button to add a snapshot.
4. Start a download. Preferably a small one since the size of the
download is likely immaterial. Wait for the "save as" dialog to open and
complete. Don't start any downloads or do anything in the meantime to
reduce noise in the profile.
5. Click the "Add snapshot" button again.
6. Save the profile (use the "Save" button), and send it to us.

If something within Chrome is causing an unnecessary delay, this should
help us figure out where that might be.

This happens for me too, I can wait a minute or two (really is two minutes,
im not just saying) and sometimes it gives a "not responding" thing that if
you continue to wait it solves and open. Both on FF and Chrome (IE works
great, which is, very very strange).
It started happening only few days ago, on TWO computers I have, Though I
didn't install anything new in neither of them.

I tried the suggestion Stub said, and disabled "Client for microsoft
networks", didn't change anything.
I checked I have few GB of free internal memory and on my HD.
I disabled all plugins, didn't help.

From asanka respond I understand he thinks the problem i when u download a
file and try to save it.
At least for me it isn't. To me it's actually when I want to upload a file
to a web site using his <input type="file" runat"server"> web control.
Meaning no data is actually being transferred, since I can't browse the
file I want to send.
(After I press the "browse" button, u can see the button was clicked since
its U.I is changed to "pressed" and back, but the browse dialog takes
forever to open. Again it happens in FF as well, but work perfectly fine on
IE)
I added the profiler snapshots as requested.

*I'm working on a Virtual machine with windows 2008 64 bit which is
connected to a network.
On both Chrome version 37.0.062.102 m and 39.0.2171.95 m

Hi folks!
I’m on a Windows 8 i5 8gb ssd drive. With v32.0.1700.107 the file browsing
was working perfectly. As soon as I migrated to v39.0.2171.95 the file
browser became very, I mean, very slow. It struggles for 10 to 15 seconds
before open the dialog to save any file.

Started happening for me less than a week ago. No memory pressure,
the 'Downloads' folder has only ten files in it, and there's no

UPDATE:

I've had this problem and just fixed it after snooping around in the temp
folders.
Deleting/Renaming the
folder "C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User
Data\Default\JumpListIcons" has solved this issue, it was 1.5 GB big and
had files that couldn't be seen.

Running Chrome Version 41.0.2272.89 m, this problem has been happening for
perhaps 2 weeks now? It started off only some save file as... were slow,
now all of them are taking up to 5 minutes (no exaggeration) for the dialog
box (or all half dozen of them, as I forget after a few minutes whether I
ahve clicked or not) to appear.

Bonus laugh: I uninstalled Firefox a few days ago because I got tired of it
pushing and hassling me for updates. And now Chrome. These browsers really
know how to get in your face and just flat out stop you getting anything
done.

It sure sounds like it'd be a website problem or a computer problem,
doesn't it? Well, at least in my case, it definitely isn't. I'm a web
application developer, and the problem regularly happens to me when I'm
testing an application running on a *local* server with a *local* database.
(By "local" I mean "the exact same computer that's running the browser.") I
can flip over to Firefox on the same machine, log in as the same
application user, and download the same thing with no problems. From
Chrome, however, there's a tremendously weird very long wait. The
downloads I'm testing with are not "heavy" for the local server; they're
very simple results of fast database queries, and web application logging
clearly shows that only a few tens of milliseconds are consumed up to the
point where Jetty starts (attempting to!) stream out the response.

Thanks for the extra information. It's hard to say what could be causing
such anomalous behavior. Logically we can eliminate the web site and your
computer (since they work fine in Firefox) and we can eliminate Chrome
(since it works fine on my computer). However that sophistry won't resolve
your problem. The only thing I can recommend is either a chrome:trace or an
ETW trace (see my Mar 2 reply) or both. I will happily look at either type
of traces and I suspect that one or both of them will reveal what is
actually going on. Without traces it is virtually impossible to investigate.

Note that chrome:traces can contain information about URLs in other tabs.
The saved files are text .json files so you can check for that. ETW traces
can contain information about the names of files being accessed and what
other processes are running, but by default do not contain URLs.

I'll try to get a good trace, but the UI I see when I go to about:tracing
doesn't really match up to the description you provided. (I'm on Linux, if
that matters.)

(Specifically: I see a top bar with a "Record" button, a checkbox
labeled "Monitoring", a "Capture Monitoring Snapshot" button, all on the
left. There are then a trio of buttons labeled "Save", "Upload",
and "Load", then a smiley face. To the right is a pair of checkboxes, one
labeled "Flow Events" and the next labeled "Highlight VSync". Then there's
an input field with no label, and two little arrows pointing away from

In the 4 years it has been a problem someone from Google could of driven to

One likely cause for delays in opening the save file dialog on Windows is a
storm of requests to update the Windows 7+ jumplist icons. This has been
addressed with change https://codereview.chromium.org/965503002 which is
now in canary. I will be interested to see if this reduces the frequency of
this issue.

If the issue continues then attaching a Chrome trace (see reply 103) may
allow for a quick investigation (see reply 104).

I had some luck solving this problem by uninstalling Avast anti-virus
(mitigated only, not entirely removed, but the save dialog at least shows
up now). I think it's actually specifically the sandboxing feature of Avast
which isn't disabled for some reason when you disable real-time scanning
(so disabling Avast doesn't actually help it). There was option to disable
the sandboxing feature separately, which might help for those who don't
want to uninstall it. It might've just been hardware accelerated
sandboxing, but I had problems with that in some other apps as well and it
was hard to pinpoint. Anyway, if you have Avast, try disabling the hardware
accelerated sandboxing and see if that helps.

had this problem going for 6 months now. File Download does not initiate
fast. Takes 5 minutes or longer. Drag and Drop Upload Widget on websites
does not function either when I locally drag to chrome browser. Only
solution is to restart.

Same issue exists if I am on local network or if I am on VPN which
eliminates any firewall issues. Problem does not exist using wget or other
browsers. I have been reading resonses and there does not seem any solid
solution. Just "maybe" solutions. Is it for a fact jumplist icons or not?

I suspect that the jumplist fix will correct this for some people - perhaps
a majority. But, probably not all. There are probably other factors that
can cause a backlog of tasks and therefore delay the save file dialog. If
you want to verify whether the upcoming fix will work for you then you can
either try a canary build (which can install side-by-side with the regular
builds) in order to see if the problem is gone, or else record a chrome
trace of the problem so that we can analyze it. Or, wait.

I found that the google browser has a slow dialog box when I have a
filesystem that is not available or having responsiveness issues. Almost
without exception, the long waits and long response time of the dialog
window is due to a NFS mount (under linux) that disappeared on me e.g. I
moved my laptop to another location but the mount was still active. Various
types of filesystems cause the save dialog to take a long time to be
respond to commands and enumerate *any* directory.

Firefox never had this problem for me, but I also think that firefox is not
using the native save dialog box.

Linux: most distribution versions that I have used and typically under KDE
since I use KDE as my desktop.

Just want to update that I stopped using Chrome due to this and other
extreme performance issues for quite a while. FireFox had none of these
issues.

I prefer Chrome so after a while I switched back. On a new, fresh install
of Chrome things ran fine for a while. But the more I used it the slower...
and slower... and slower everything got again. It's maddening.

Seems to be a Windows 10 window snap issue. If you have Chrome maximized,

Unfortunately, while we know that this problem is real, we are unable to
reproduce it. Therefore, the only way we can make progress on identifying
the cause and fixing it is by getting traces from people who are seeing the
problem. This can be an ETW trace (see the instructions in
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=103737#c123) or a
chrome://tracing trace. My preference would be an ETW trace, which should
be relatively straightforward. I can almost always determine the root cause
of performance problems by looking at ETW traces.

Can you tell me more about the trace? It seems to show the file dialog
appearing after about 6 s, and then going away 14.7 s later. This seems
consistent with an initial delay of 6 s while waiting for a response from
the server, then 14.7 s of user interaction, and then the file download
completing.

It would be helpful in interpreting the trace if I knew when it was
started, in relation to when the download was started, and what sort of
delays were observed. That makes it easier to untangle what is
working-as-expected and what is anomalous.
