Comment #5 on issue 381425 by g...@chromium.org: Google Chrome MSI
installler Failed
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=381425

Thanks. Here's a timeline I can assemble from those logs:

10:13:43: Chrome 34.0.1847.116 uninstalled started
10:14:19: uninstaller timed out waiting for a GoogleUpdate process [*]
10:14:19: uninstall complete
10:14:19: MSI executed
10:15:32: MSI failed
10:59:09: Chrome 34.0.1847.116 installed started
10:59:20: install complete

Based on [*], my guess is that Google Update was busy doing something else
and therefore refused to run the installer contained in the .msi. If you
can reproduce this error, it will be very helpful to see the log from
Google Update. To capture it, create a file named C:\GoogleUpdate.ini
(you'll need to be an Administrator to do this) and put the following in it:

[LoggingLevel]
LC_UTIL=6
LC_SETUP=6
LC_SHELL=6
LC_CORE=6
LC_JS=6
LC_PLUGIN=6
LC_SERVICE=6
LC_OPT=6
LC_NET=6
LC_REPORT=6

[LoggingSettings]
EnableLogging=1
LogToFile=1

Then try the installer again. This should create a log file in either
C:\ProgramData\Google\Update\Log or C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\Google\Update\Log, depending on your OS version.
Please find that log and attach it. Thanks.

meetbibin: Thank you for providing that log. Here's the interesting line
from it:

In brief, Chrome's installer failed to unpack itself on your computer. This
could be a result of the .msi being corrupted, or of the installer running
into a problem on your computer. There may be more detail in
C:\Windows\Temp\chrome_installer.log. Since the .msi you are using is
already out of date, you could try fetching the latest version
(https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/business/browser/admin/) and try
with that. I'd be glad to look at chrome_installer.log if you'd attach it
to this issue.

This explains what I saw in comment 5: Google Update is still running in
the background after your uninstall step, so the subsequent install cannot
proceed. Why are you trying to uninstall before installing the new version?

Has there been any resolution to this issue? I'm experiencing the same 1722
custom action [DoInstall] failure error . This install is being done on a
newly staged computer with no prior version of Chrome or any other Google
processes running. Installation being done on XP with Chrome intended for
use as interim browser solution. Using 66.77.16514 version of

Bibin -- I was able to resolve my issue. not sure if yours is related, but
in my case, it turned out I had registry key
HKLM\Software\Policies\Google\Update that contained some registry values.
(this might have been set by a group policy I have that configures Chrome
settings - still looking into that. This policy - unfortunately - applies
only to the ONE development machine I was conducting my testing on! Hence,
it failed on this machine, but installed properly on all others). In any
case, once I deleted those keys, the application installed properly - no
more 1722 errors. (I've also seen some postings that indicate similar keys
may exist under HKLM\Software\Google\Update).

No, ERROR_SERVICE_DOES_NOT_EXIST will not cause Chrome's installation to
fail. In fact, even if Google Update cannot install itself, it will still
run the Chrome Installer.

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=381425

This is the same failure in HasXmlParser as issue 503981. It appears that
your computer does not have MSXML installed. Here is one of the relevant
lines from one of the procmon logs you provided:

12:36:16.3233127 PM GoogleUpdate.exe 3856 RegOpenKey
HKCR\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{F6D90F11-9C73-11D3-B32E-00C04F990BB4}\InprocHandler

Note that there's no class registered for the DOMDocument CLSID
{F6D90F11-9C73-11D3-B32E-00C04F990BB4}.

I can't explain why your computer is lacking this. MSXML is included in
Windows Vista and Windows 7. You could try downloading and installing it
from https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/data/ff683553 and see if that
resolves the issue for you. Please report back with your findings. Thanks.

Both the Google Update log and the ProcMon log indicate that the msxml COM
objects are not registered on your machine. The program I've attached to
this comment will attempt to load msxml, logging diagnostics to the console
in the process. Please run it from a cmd prompt to see if msxml is found on
your system.

Comment #57 on issue 381425 by zibree: Google Chrome MSI installler Failed
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=381425

Hey, does anybody care about this problem? I am willing to help here, if
you provide some utility to check what's wrong I can run it and check.
As of now the only program I am having problems with is Chrome. So I don't
think my system has problems, it only has for some reason a situation you
didn't think of.

The problem is about chromesetup and googleupdate, it involves all
installer versions, online and standalone. Please provide me a way to debug
this so I can solve the problem.

I ended up installing the latest build of chromium.

Thanks for ignoring me and all others with the same problem. The problem is
your shitty installer and your lack of interest in fixing it.

Ok, dropbox now uses the same installer, named DropboxUpdate... And it
gives the same error, obviously.

Here are the process monitor full logs. PLEASE HELP!

From that procmon log, I see that the default value for the key
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{F6D90F11-9C73-11D3-B32E-00C04F990BB4}\InProcServer32
points to msxml6.dll on your computer, yet it points to msxml3.dll on every
machine I've inspected, all of which also have msxml6 installed. I can't
explain how this happened, but that seems to be the source of your
problems. I'm not sure if Microsoft provides a tool to restore proper MSXML
registration.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling all of them.. also using regsvr32...
it always stays that way... but the ONLY program I seem to have problem is
this installer. Can't you just modify it? Or tell me what to check? Or give
me a utility or something? I don't think that is the real problem anyway.
Everything else works as of now. I installed and uninstalled many programs
every week... not a single problem.

The Windows SDK ships with a tool called oleview.exe. For some reason I
don't see this tool installed with the Windows 10 SDK (maybe it's been
killed?) but I do see it in the Windows 8.1 SDK and earlier versions.

If you have one of these SDKs installed, perhaps you can run this tool.
Then expand Object Classes -> All Objects and scroll all the way down to
the X's. You should see the following (sample):

XML Document
XML Document 3.0
XML DOM Document
XML DOM Document
XML DOM Document 3.0
XML DOM Document 5.0
XML DOM Document 6.0

You can right click on any of these and choose "Create Instance". One or
more of them will most likely fail. It would be useful to know which
ones. Perhaps manually restoring the registry settings of whichever ones
fail to a known good state will solve the problem.

Note that there is both an x86 and an x64 version of oleview.exe, you will
want to do the test in both versions. For the Windows 8.1 SDK, they are in:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.1\bin\x86\oleview.exe
C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.1\bin\x64\oleview.exe

Thanks! Finally someone who got it right!
You wereright I had TWO instances of XML DOM DOCUMENT.
One of them was not working.
I ran this Microsoft FIX it: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/278636
Then this:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=3988

Then rebooted.

Both Chrome and Dropbox installers now work.
I suggest you to add these instructions somewhere.

Thanks for your help!

Glad it works. FWIW I also have 2 copies of XML DOM Document on my
machine. So I think that's normal. But on my machine they both work. I
guess it will remain a mystery how one of yours got into a non-working state

IMHO, you should just do an open instance on XML DOM Document.. if it works
the installer proceeds, if it doesn't it should give a readable error or
fix the problem, or just tell the installer to use "the other" one.
