New issue 110343 by ggarcia...@gmail.com: Page randomly turns into
red/green gradient boxes or solid blue
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=110343

Chrome Version : 16.0.912.75
OS Version: 6.1 (Windows 7)
URLs (if applicable) : N/A
Other browsers tested: none

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Browse the Internet.
2. Occasionally a tab will encounter a glitch pictured in the attachment.

What is the expected result?
The tab should display its contents normally.

What happens instead?
It doesn't.

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if
possible.
I'm able to work around the glitch by switching to another tab and back
again (although this does not work if the other tab in question is only
showing the New Tab page). Refreshing also fixes the glitch. Sometimes,
especially on YouTube, I get a completely blue (#0000FF) page, but any
plugin content like the Flash player remains unaffected. The glitch usually
occurs when I switch tabs, but I've seen it happen in the background while
another application has focus.
These errors started occurring after I upgraded my Intel graphics drivers.
I don't know how to downgrade them, or if that's even an acceptable
solution.

UserAgentString: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/535.7
(KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/16.0.912.75 Safari/535.7

Comment #3 on issue 110343 by ggarcia...@gmail.com: Page randomly turns

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=110343

As of 19.0.1084.46, I'm no longer seeing the gradient boxes, but I find
that I'm now unable to interact with tabs under the same conditions as
before (that is, it often happens immediately after closing a tab,
switching to another tab and back alleviates the problem, and so on).
Scrolling has no visual effect until I switch to another tab and back,
although, as before, Flash content like YouTube videos are still
unaffected. The issue also occurs sporadically when I click on a link,
causing the page with the hyperlink to remain visible even though the
linked page has loaded and should be visible.

Are there any web pages where this tends to happen particularly often? Are
there any particular things that tend to trigger it?

I would be interested to know whether or not this happens for pages with
Flash plugins but with links I can go and look myself.

The contents of the about:gpu page is very helpful. Also, whether the
systems have dual integrated / discrete GPUs and, if so, which is active at
the time.

Thx.

This happens on a page that used AJAX and several small flash based helpers
(e.g. a small flash clipboard app and a voice app that uses flash to access
the USB headset). However its an internal app so I can't easily provide
access. Just an FYI, I am not using any of these things when it happens. I
can simply have the tab open fine for a while and than randomly it pops up
this graphic. I did notice that I can quite consistently reproduce by
killing another tab (seems to trigger this gradient). Adding GPU info.

Noticed this started happening from time to time when switching between
tabs of windows that had a flash component after the latest (21.0.1180.60)
release.

Noticed Pepper Flash came enabled with the latest update as well which also
is causing some audio issues for me.

Disabling Pepper Flash and relying on gcswf32.dll under chrome://plugins
seems to have fixed this and my audio issues so far, hope this helps.

I am also experiencing this issue (same gradient grid image as show
above.) I also had multiple tabs open at the same time. I am able to
reproduce it easily on this site:
http://www.w3schools.com/html5/html5_video.asp and click the "Try It
Yourself" button under the example code. This will open a new window (no
flash - just HTML5.) When I close the new window I see this back on the
original page. I also noticed that the grid remains until I move my mouse
over the window - this the page refreshes to the correct content.

I have Lenovo G570 i5 on Win7 x64.

Someone above mentioned webpages that this happens on. For me, it happens
when I have multiple tabs open in the websites of www.espn.com and
www.cnn.com. When I close a tab and the next tab is one of these websites,
it happens sporadically. I first noticed the problem roughly 7-10 days ago.

i'm having this issue as well. Has happened on multiple pages but
repeatedly on chelseafc.com which frequently has video in the main window.
I think it is been related to video/flash since all the webpages it has
occurred on have this.

conclude it is not caused by any extension.

It's been happening for me very occasionally as well since 21. I've
attached the top part of my chrome://gpu.

One time it happened while I was somewhere on bugasalt.com, I closed the
tab, and then the next tab selected by Chrome after the tab close was
filled with the gradient boxes.

I seem to remember it happening when closing a Chrome window that was on
top of another Chrome window. The tab in the window below was then filled
with the gradient boxes.

Scrolling with the mouse wheel and clicking inside of the tab and switching
tabs back and forth didn't seem to make the gradient go away; refreshing
the page did.

It is happening for me too, Lenovo Thinkpad T520 Win7 pro 64 bit

A url where it sometimes happens:

(spaces intentionally inserted, not for people under 18)

Screenshot:

I have also seen it happen on YouTube

I virtually always have quite a few tabs, I don't know if that impacts it
or not.

Same problem. Using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Google Chrome
21.0.1180.77 m.

The bug is popping up quite frequently and is getting quite irritating.
Scrolling will sometimes make it go away.

Untested theory: Flash plug-in crashed a few times at the same time,
perhaps the two are related. I guess I could disable Flash and see if it
goes away.

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=110343

We have found easy steps to repro on two local machines. The good news is
that the problem doesn't seem to exist post Chrome 21 (e.g. Dev channel
(22) or Canary (23)).

It repros pretty consistently by doing the following:
1. Turn on "compositing on all pages" in about:flags
2. Start the browser, go to www.google.com.
3. Open one more tab and once again go to www.google.com
4. Switch back to the first tab and close the second tab by clicking the
corresponding red X button in the tab strip (without switching to it first).
5. At this point, the first tab will start showing the pattern. If it
doesn't, click on the + next to the tab to open a new tab, and then switch
back to the original one. This time it may be black (another manifestation
of probably the same issue).

Interestingly enough, this only happens when there's no horizontal
scrollbar. Making the window small enough for the horizontal scrollbar to
appear at the bottom seems to make the problem go away. Same thing is true
if the FPS counter or the composited layer borders are shown.

It seems to only be happening with integrated Intel GPUs and it looks most
likely like a driver bug.

We have a possible fix (a workaround really) that's being tested.

I met this screen couple times. I just press Ctrl +, Ctrl - couple times or
use the wheel of the mouse to change the display scale. The wired screen
will disappear immediately. That's interesting.

I just tested the method provided by vange...@google.com (Comment 61).
After enable the "GPU compositing on all pages Mac, Windows, Linux" from
about:\\flags, I can call out the wired screen as "vange..." mentioned. I
also tested used Ctrl+, Crtl-, or Ctrl+ mouse wheel to change viewing
scale. It still can eliminate the wired screen.

I get the red/green boxes too. Almost always on igoogle website. I use
Windows 7, Chrome, desktop PC. Refreshing doesn't fix it... well, it does
fix it, but only for like 15 seconds, before the boxes come back. Sometimes
closing Chrome and reopening works.

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=110343

Update: I've now had this problem for 3 weeks. Not getting better, but
not getting worse. I have a Toshiba Laptop P745. Intel Core 13-2350M CPU
@2.30 GHz, 64-bit.

The red/green boxes most commonly appear when I - have a window open with
several tabs, open a NEW browser window (from a link in one of the original
windows), then shut that new window. The boxes appear on the top (last)
tab of the original window. Refreshing helps once in a while, clicking in
the scroll bar will sometimes clear it; normally the window has to be
shut. This does not happen at every site. It seems to happen more
frequently when clicking links that have the little plus symbol over them,
like Yahoo News. Sometimes the boxes will blink on and then go away. This
problem is intermittent - sometimes the exact process to call it to happen
will do it, sometimes not.

correctly but then bugs out and display the red-green gradient grid pattern
array of squares.

This problem happens on practically every web page I go to. I can be
sitting on news.google.com and it will do a periodic update of news sources
and the page will flip to this annoying pattern. While I was not on that
page I was not interacting with it. Changes to content driven from an
external source can cause this to pop up.

I gave this a try on my i7-2600 (with HD Graphics 2000), but couldn't
reproduce it. That's with recent drivers. I notice those about:gpu logs
show they're using drivers that are about a year old. I found those drivers
but they failed to install. I believe they might be OEM-specific.
