New issue 345916 by melody...@chromium.org: New Tab is a blank page
called "Untitled" & web pages are not loading
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=345916

This issue appears to be back in 33.0.1750.11,see user report below
(confirmed by several other users):

https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/eH3jbFBV9Xs

This morning I opened up Google Chrome and my Homepage came up. I went to
open a new tab and a blank page called "Untitled" opened. I closed the tab
and tried again, smae thing happened. When i went to put a new webpage in
the address bar it just kept loading and loading, nothing happened. When I
went to favorites and tried to open one, it just kept loading and loading
like the address bar from before.

I tried closing and reopening the browser, same thing happened.

I read that you just updated Chrome last night and there are some problems
but I have not seen this one before.

I now am using IE because I cant use Chrome and our IE has it own problems.
This is my Version:

Google Chrome 33.0.1750.117 (Official Build 252094) m
OS Windows
Blink 537.36 (@167220)
JavaScript V8 3.23.17.13

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=345916

Also found corresponding reports in Feedback:

"When attempting to open a new tab, the page does not load and displays
only as "Untitled."

I can open LINKS on a page in a new tab as normal, but bookmarks, homepage,
settings pages, or blank new tabs all show the above.

There is a brief (a few seconds) window when I first start the browser when
I CAN open new tabs normally, which I thought suggests that this is related
to a plugin. I'm running only a handful, and I've tried disabling them one
at a time to no effect.

I really don't want to have to reinstall chrome, since I'm not sure what
all information I would lose. Please help if possible."

Comment #3 on issue 345916 by msn...@google.com: New Tab is a blank page
called "Untitled" & web pages are not loading
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=345916

We have the same problem We're running Chrome 33.0.1750.117m on Vista Home
Premium SP2.

Anything that opens a new tab causes Chrome to lock up. For instance, if
you open GMail in the first window, then go to the Chrome Settings page, a
new tab marker opens at the top of the window but nothing ever loads in
that tab or in any other tab.

Another failure scenario is to start Chrome, go immediately to Settings,
choose "Help" on the left hand side, then press "Report a Problem." Nothing
happens and Chrome is dead.

Another symptom is that once Chrome stops responding, all of the extensions
start crashing. We have a mail checker extension and a dictionary
extension. They start throwing an unending series of balloons in the
bottom, right of the screen saying "Extension has crashed. Click here to
restart it." If you restart the extension, it immediately crashes again.

Comment #4 on issue 345916 by matt.zuba: New Tab is a blank page
called "Untitled" & web pages are not loading
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=345916

Seems like this is affecting everyone who is running Chrome 33 on Vista
(including me).

Opening Chrome works fine, my home page loads (whichever home page I have
set), and I can click on my bookmark links to load other sites, but after
about 5 seconds of Chrome being open, no other pages load. I can't
navigate to any chrome:// urls either. If I try, Chrome converts the link
into something like this:

I type: chrome://settings
Chrome changes it to: chrome://www.settings.com

And the page never loads or goes anywhere.

Trying to open new websites only shows a spinning loading indicator but
nothing ever happens.

New tabs show come up blank with 'Untitled' in the tab title.

However Chrome works just fine if I 'Run as Administrator' from the
shortcut on my desktop.

I have NO extensions installed whatsoever, and I even uninstalled Chrome,
removed the Google data directory from my 'Local' folder and reinstalled
Chrome. The problem persists.

Are you on 64-bit Vista Home Premium SP2 or 32-bit? I tried with a 32-bit
vista home premium sp2 VM and a fresh install of Chrome and did not run
into an issue. I can also dredge up a physical Vista box as well.

The Run As Administrator... hint is very interesting, thanks.

I want to triage if this is a networking issue or something else.

If you could start Chrome with the option --log_net_log=C:\temp\netlog.txt
(or any other path for the file) that will capture the networking details.

You could then either attach to the bug or send directly to me at

Comment #11 on issue 345916 by matt.zuba: New Tab is a blank page
called "Untitled" & web pages are not loading
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=345916

To answer your first question, I have 32-bit Vista Home Premium SP1. I
didn't realize SP2 was available, I just did a 'check for updates' in
Windows Update and it shows everything is up to date. I can manually
install SP2 if desired, though a few days ago Chrome was working fine.

For the log - I think the right flag is --log-net-log? The underscores
didn't produce anything, but the dashes did. Attached.

Here's what I did in the browser:
- Fired Chrome up and loaded home page of www.google.com/ig (Loaded
successfully)
- ctrl-clicked Yahoo.com bookmark to open Yahoo.com in a new tab (Loaded
Successfully)
- Single clicked Detroit News bookmark to open detroitnews.com in current
tab (Loading indicator just spins and spins, never times out)
- Clicked 'triple bar' icon to open a new tab (opened grey screen
with 'Untitled' in tab title)
- typed 'chrome://settings' in new tab and pressed enter (nothing happened).

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the feedback!

it was --log-net-log rather than --log_net_log, thanks for the correction.

The log definitely shows that yahoo.com loaded fine.

For detroitnews.com, we do the preconnect/presolves (you can see with
the HTTP_STREAM_JOB in the log) but a request is never issued in the
first place. This leads me to worry that this is a bug higher up in
the navigation stack.

The chrome://settings never even shows up in the log.

This definitely shows that yahoo.com loaded fine.

Adding navigation and GPU in case it is one of those. This does not look
like a low-level networking bug. Key points are that no navigation is
allowed, but starting Chrome as administrator does not run into the
problem. This also seems to impact Vista users the most.

Same here.
Windows Vista SP2 32-bit.
Works fine if run as Administrator.
If not Administrator, can open Tools->Extensions if it's the first thing
done, but after that nothing will open.

As an update, after disabling all my extensions and enabling them one by

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=345916

I'm still getting this problem and none of the above has helped. Here's
some more detail on the symptoms. You can't open any webpages from the
omnibox or from bookmarks. When you enter a URL you just see the existing
page or a grey area in the case of a new tab. So the browser is pretty well
unusable. But, oddly, some things do still work.

The default page always opens correctly in the first tab. From that page
you can navigate normally by clicking links in the page. But when you type
a URL in the omnibox it doesn't open. As you type, google displays various
suggestions. But when you hit enter, nothing changes and you continue to
see what was there before.

When you hit enter, the icon to the left of the omnibox changes momentarily
to an X, then back to a circular arrow. This behaviour suggests that chrome
thinks it has downloaded a page which is blank.

I'm running Version 33.0.1750.117 m on Wndows Vista Business SP2. The
problem started for me today.

Another quirk is I keep getting the bell icon and the message "Hangout
services has crashed" in the notification area.

Things I tried that made no difference.

Reinstalling chrome. I completely uninstalled chrome from the control
panel, then reinstalled a fresh copy. I tried two ways (keeping and erasing
history) with no difference.

Disabling extensions. After re-installing there were no extensions
installed apart from Docs 0.0.0.6 which seems to come free with the install.

Program compatibility. I am not running chrome in compatibility mode, so I
couldn't turn it off.

Same problem as number 23, also could not view Flash websites on a client's
computer today. (Vista 32)
I've been working on this computer for almost 3 hours with no luck. I've
tried everything including:
Disabling Flash
re-installing Flash
Deleting Users
Uninstalling Firefox
Uninstalling Safari
Uninstalling Chrome
Checking for malware and viruses
Cleaning the registry
Rebooted numerous times
Renaming both Pepper Player directories
Re-installing chrome numerous times
Uninstalling antivirus (Avast)
... The list goes on.

What I think finally worked was:
Going to plug-ins (type chrome:plugin in your chrome address bar) and in
Adobe Flash Player section place a check mark in the always allowed box.
Restart Chrome.

Hope this helps most of you if not all of you

I tried the change on plugins - no help. Yes I found that opening as admin
does work but is not a good long term solution (can't click on links from
emails and have them go to Chrome among other reasons.)

Appreciate the attention to the problem.

Same as iamadria. Changing chrome://plugins made no difference. Run as

all the time. I'd be happy to run any diagnostic tools if this will help.

I've been having the exact same issue. I'm lucky if I can open a page at
all. I cannot open the settings or any "chrome:// " links, even if I type
it into the first (and only) tab. Every time I try to open any tabs besides
the initial one, it simply says "unavailable" and doesn't even try to load.

I have the same problem as listed above. Administrator works, but user

Please help? Using windows Vista Home.
