New issue 266674 by teflons...@gmail.com: Audio from Chrome playing to
wrong channels in Audio Interface.
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=266674

Chrome Version : 28.0.1500.95
URLs (if applicable) :
Other browsers tested:
Add OK or FAIL after other browsers where you have tested this issue:
Safari 6: OK
Firefox 20: OK
IE 7/8/9/10: On a MacPro, no IE.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open Chrome
2. Navigate to any page on the internet that plays audio.
3. Attempt to play the audio on that page (youtube, soundcloud, direct link
to .wav file or .mp3 file.

What is the expected result?
Audio from sources playing in chrome is played through the Master channels
(9 and 10) of my MOTU MK3 Audio Interface.

What happens instead?
Audio is played through the Analog 1-2 outputs of my MOTU MK3 Audio
Interface.

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if
possible.

This above sums it up pretty succinctly. I am a music producer, and as
mentioned above use a MOTU MK3 audio interface. I play all of my audio
through the master (XLR) outputs, using the software (MOTU Audio Setup)
provided with the interface, I am able to set the audio routing
configuration, the Main Out Assign is set to Main Out 1-2. Audio plays fine
for all other browsers, and all other applications, but Chrome never plays
sound out of the Main Out. Instead, Chrome plays audio out of the Analog
1-2 channels, and I can't figure out how to fix this.

The same has been occurring using my Native Instruments Audio 10 for months
now. I have the audio configured in OS X 10.6.8 to route through channels
other than the default main outputs. Audio in Chrome and only Chrome is
intermittent as to which set of outputs is used. Some sites will send
audio to the main outputs and others will send it to the OS configured
outputs. I have even run across the case on http://soundcloud.com in which
multiple audio clips are loaded on the page and some play through my main
outputs while others on the same page play in the configured outputs.

I'm seeing the same issue with my RME Fireface 800. Most websites get it
right (youtube, soundcloud, etc.) and output to my main stereo out (channel
1 + 2), but a few like boomkat.com tries to ouput to channel 3.

Same problem with RME Fireface 800, on OSX 10.6.8, Chrome 30.0.1599.101.

AudioMIDI Setup is configured to use outputs 27-28 as the "stereo" outputs
(Configure Speakers). Every other application honors this. Chrome insists
on routing all audio to the first pair of outputs for the RME, outputs 1-2.
Most annoying.

On the Motu 828mk3 firewire audio interfaceI I have go the same problem.
All audio is going through main out 1 & 2 except for Google Chrome going
through analog 1 & 2.
This goes for all audio from Google Chrome that is produced within Chrome.
No matter which Google Chrome I try, it's all the same (normal, beta, dev
or canary). I'm on Mac 0S 10.9.

I have this same issue with the Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6. Any
audio that is played via an HTML5 video player gets sent to the audio
channels 3/4 but no matter what remain in audible some how. The only way
to hear the sound from these video is to switch the OSX audio settings back
to internal sound. OSX 10.8.5 + Chrome 31.0.1650.63

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=266674

I'm unsure whether this is a separate issue or not:

When mono sound sources, such as the HTML5 version of
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARgilIn8JVI plays on my multichannel
interface plays, Google doesn't upmix it to dual mono, so I'm only getting
output on channel on channel 1 of my interface, instead of a duplicated
signal to channel 3+4, which OS X is configured to do.

Also, this entire bug seems specific to multichannel interfaces - Chrome
behaves as expected when I set my system-default interface to be a
two-channel output, such as the headphone port on my mac.

Hey everyone, I've put together a test build which might help with this
issue. I don't have a multichannel interface to test with though. Can one
of you please try this build?

http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/dalecurtis-shared/chrome-ch-layout.tar.bz2

Please launch it from the command line like so after extraction:

./Chromium.app/Contents/MacOS/Chromium --user-data-dir=/tmp/.data

And then let me know if this URL plays sound out the expected channels:

Chrome 31.0.1650.63 - audio uses erroneous main channels
Chromium 34.0.1778.0 (244019) - orchestral whimsy from the correct channels!

I tried this out using youtube with the same results. I hope this makes it
into an upcoming Chrome build, great work!

Pass through channel layout on OSX if hardware supports it.

Allows OSX to handle remapping channels according to a user's

I think there has been some kind of regression here.

Chrome (35.0.1916.114) has recently started outputting the sound of many
Youtube videos via channel 3 again, just like before the fix. Could
coincide with OS X 10.9.3, but not completely sure.

Is anyone else seeing this?

Always use the source channel layout with AudioBufferConverter.

There are no web sites currently using this feature, but it causes
all multichannel users to waste resources unnecessarily upmixing,
generating, and transferring empty channel data.

Further this breaks fancy OSX multichannel users which have non
standard channel layouts. Mostly because we don't want to deal
with the plethora of ways OSX wants to map channels ourselves.

Instead we can require that MSE users which want to change channel
counts, must specify the maximum number of channels in the first
initialization segment.

This also fixes use cases where clients routed multichannel streams
into WebAudio for processing instead of actual playout.

Thanks guys, I'll get this merged to M36 soon. Sorry for the
inconvenience. Sadly it won't make it to M35, but you can switch to Chrome
Beta channel for something more stable than Canary.

I'm currently running Chrome 36.0.1985.49 beta, and a Focusrite Scarlett
8i6 where system audio is configured to output to channels 3/4, and am
still having issues:

1. Audio is still sent to 1/2 instead of 3/4 (this happens in all versions)
2. Mono sources are not upmixed/duplicated - a video such as
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQgzLzOcYpk only outputs audio to channel
1. If I set the system audio device to a stereo device (such as
Soundflower 2-channel), the mono channel is duplicated.

The fix for most users requires us not to upmix the audio when we detect
the system supports more channels than requested by playback; we instead
leave that up to the OS. So that's the cause of #2.

For #1, by configured do you mean you have the channels for stereo set in
Audio MIDI Setup?

This is what I guess is puzzling me. My interface reports 12 physical
channels, but to applications, it is still a stereo-only interface, and
Chrome upmixes/duplicates those just fine.

I've attached the plist files from /Library/Preferences/Audio

com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist 8.1 KB

Still having this issue. Is there a way to manually force Chrome to be
only 2 channels. I only have stereo speakers connected anyway and I
realize this is an edge case thing, so I'd be happy even with a manual fix
at this point.

Really sucks that Flash can handle this just fine. One of the reasons why
media people criticize HTML5.
