Postmessage from chrome app to webview, event.source is null

I have a chrome app that relies heavily on the exchange of messages between itself and the webviews it creates.

Most of the communications execute smoothly, however some of the messages reach the webview with event.source as null, rendering the webview unable to respond and breaking the chain of communication on the very first message.

Anyone encountered this problem before and found a solution for it? I noticed this after I updated my testing machine from v39 to v42, not sure if it's connected...

Please file a bug at http://crbug.com/new with minimized reproducible test case if possible.
