Check your chrome://policy/,
look for the policy value of GenAILocalFoundationalModelSettings:

"When the policy is set to Allowed (0) or not set, the model is downloaded automatically, and used for inference.

When the policy is set to Disabled (1), the model will not be downloaded, and the existing model (if already downloaded) will be deleted."

Hi Paul,

Can you send a screenshot of chrome://on-device-internals, specifically of the Model Status tab?

FWIW, it's working fine here, with the exact same Chrome version.

Cheers,
Tom

I encountered a rather unusual issue during my development session. Everything was functioning correctly until the On-Device Model suddenly became unavailable.

Specifically, I noticed that the "On Device Model" entry has completely disappeared from chrome://components. To investigate whether this was a hardware limitation, I tested the same environment using Chrome Canary (Version 150.0.7839.0, arm64). Surprisingly, the Prompt API works perfectly fine in the Canary build.

I reset all flags. Only enable WebMCP now

Alright, this should be the information we need. Could you please file a new Chromium bug with these details? Feel free to post the bug URL here, so I can triage it to the right team.

Problem resolved.

Here are the steps I took to fix it:
  1. Visited chrome://settings/system and found that the "On-device AI" setting was disabled.
  2. Enabled the setting.
  3. Opened DevTools > Console panel and ran "await LanguageModel.availability();" & "await LanguageModel.create();" .
  4. The model discovery triggered and started downloading.
After checking chrome://on-device-internals/, the model is now ready. It is a bit strange, though, as I don't recall ever going to chrome://settings/system to turn the "On-device AI" setting off in the first place.

Hi Paul,

This of course explains it. Could you update the bug accordingly, please? This setting is rather new, so maybe there was a mistake with its state when it was rolled out? Definitely let the team on the bug know that you didn't knowingly touch it. Thanks for the help!

Cheers,
Tom

No problem, I've updated the ticket with the detailed steps. Hopefully, this helps the team track down the root cause. Thanks!
