Hello,

I saw that there has been progress towards a built-in HLS feature in chromium and wondered if there was a plan to bring to eventually enable this feature for the android webview & chromium/chrome browser use case and for it to fully support the HLS standard?

Would it be possible to share how far along is the current development? e.g. is it largely functional but unstable and needs proven out? Or are there significant gaps in functionality still?

The chromium bug tracking the HLS feature is here...
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=1266991

The runtime flag controlling the feature is here...

I could not find plans for it on https://chromestatus.com/features but would be interested to hear about it!

I understand there is existing support for HLS on Android but that it is rather limited (single-origin manifests) and believe it uses Android MediaPlayer instead of the internal player in chromium: https://www.chromium.org/audio-video/

Please let me know if I've misunderstood anything!

Graeme

As far as I can see this looks like it should be supported by WebView as well as Chrome when it's finished and rolled out; WebView shares its media stack with Chrome and things generally behave the same. But, I've not actually talked to the folks implementing it.

You'd have to talk to the media team who are implementing it.
