  • Is it possible to update Android WebView to the latest version on older Android version?
  • Where can I find the platform-level dependencies for Android WebView?

Hi, can you give us a little more context to help us answer your questions?
  • Are you a user trying to update WebView only on your personal device, or are you a software developer trying to ship out devices and configure the Android ROM for those devices? If you're just trying to update it on your own phone, then most users will have the Play Store installed on the device and this will automatically update WebView. If you're trying to design custom Android ROMs, then please read through our technical documentation at https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src/+/HEAD/android_webview/docs/aosp-system-integration.md and reply here to ask any follow up questions you may have.
  • Can you elaborate what you mean by platform-level dependencies? If you can be more precise with the question here then I think we can give a better answer to help you.

We upgraded our Android Q devices to the latest webview, so yes, it's possible. There was nothing else required other than figuring our how to build this project, and replacing the existing webview prebuilt in our system image.

I would also add: it's not only possible to use an up-to-date WebView version, but we actually recommend you do so. The latest WebView versions benefit from security patches, bug fixes, and new features. So if you're shipping an Android Q system image, it's ideal if you try to use the latest available WebView version (at time of writing, that would be M146) rather than whatever version of WebView happens to be in the AOSP branch for Q (I think this was M74-ish).

You can always check https://chromiumdash.appspot.com/releases?platform=Webview to see the latest stable WebView release.
