After the current version Version 64.0.3282.190 (Official Build) (64-bit) was installed I cannot login to my chromebook as owner.

After the recent OS update, there is a small red triangle with an exclamation point next to my name as owner. I click to enter my login name/password and it keeps going on a loop repeatedly asking for login name/password to be re-entered without letting me sign-in. The username/password/connection are all correct.

I don't want to do a hard reset/powerwash yet and lose all my files/settings.

I have already submitted multiple tech 'report an issue' detailed reports to Google. It is clear to me that this issue only began after the recent OS update, what is the solution?

HELP! Any suggestions please. I would appreciate any advice!

To provide a little more insight this issue was posted in the Chromebook Central forum and so far four users have encountered it -
All appear to have run into the issue when updating to Version 64.0.3282.190 (Official Build) (64-bit) but the devices don't seem to have much in common.
(2) Acer Chromebook 15's (yuna), (1) Asus Chromebook Flip C101PA (bob), and one Acer Chromebook 14 (edgar or lars ???)

Unfortunately, no one has been able to figure a way out this apart from a powerwash or recovery which the posters are trying to avoid if possible.

This sounds like it could be due to filesystem corruption, the symptoms are similar to e.g. https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=786999 .
Unfortunately, the only workaround I'm aware of is powerwashing the device.

+ hashimoto@ and gwendal@ who dealt with filesystem issues in the past may know if there are better ways to diagnose / deal with such issues.

Just to clarify, I only had the issue of being unable to login as owner of my Chromebook after the recent OS update (Version 64.0.3282.190 (Official Build) (64-bit). I am able to login as guest and am able to add user and login.

Questions:

1) What does the red triangle with exclamation point next to my name on the main login screen indicate? Some sort of sync error? Why did that only appear for the first time after the OS update? I am able to sign in to my gmail account through the browser once I've logged into Chromebook as guest or other user.

2) If it is a file system corruption, why am I able to use the Chromebook with any user other than owner? Why would that occur only after the OS update?

3) I cross-posted this issue on the Chromebook Central Help Forum. Other people reported the same issue of being unable to login as owner after OS update and some users reported that doing a powerwash did not solve the issue. They had the same problem of being unable to login as owner even after doing a powerwash.

4) Any other suggestions besides a powerwash? Any way to retrieve/save files/settings of owner without being able to login as owner?

Thanx Pavol for the crbug reference.

It seems this issue or something similar to it has happened in the past but it's a bit strange that it's happening to multiple users when updating to M64.

In an older related crbug.com/430125 the following was mentioned:

Errors in cryptohomed during login can be found in system logs, file:///var/log/messages,
which you can get to in guest mode even if you can't login.

I wonder if gathering those logs from the affected devices might be of help.

Have you checked if your API keys are right in your build?

I've found that if you restart your Chromebook enough times, it will eventually ask for your email and password, and you can sign in. If you don't sign out, you can continue using your Chromebook, and you could back up your files or something in case you have to eventually powerwash.
