Why is Chrome OS so much faster than my developer build?

Just got my Cr-48, a great surprise!
If you haven't heard anything back from your application for the
Pilot, know that there's still hope!
I'm surprised though, Chrome OS seems exponentially faster than the
developer build of Chromium OS that I compiled at the beginning of the
month. I'm guessing that the kernel's been compiled only to work with
the Cr-48 (Mario) hardware, and that the read speeds from the drive
are faster than those of my old USB drive my old netbook -- which I
run my self-built versions on. But does that explain the added speedy-
ness?
Chrome OS is of course different than Chromium OS. And this build is
marked Beta, where the one I compiled using the Chromium Build
Instructions was listed as Dev (I think.) Being that I don't need the
developer features (I was dropping into Terminal just to start SSH,
which is still available from Ctrl+Alt+T) is there a way to build a
comparable Beta version of Chromium OS? If the difference in versions
causes the speed difference, I'd rather just build the faster one.

cr-48 has no hard drive.. prolly has something to do with it..

Booting off an ssd gives waaaaay better performance than booting off USB.

Thanks for the help guys!
I'm going to try and snag an SSD so I can run Chromium OS full-time on
my old laptop. Building from source as we speak via a fresh Ubuntu
Server install, controlled over SSH on my Cr-48.
