amd64-generic/x86-generic have already been converted to freon.  you didn't say which board you're trying to build for though.

there is no raspberry pi 2 overlay which means you created it which means it's entirely up to you how the board is defined.  if you want to use freon in it, then do so.  if you want to use X in it, then do so.

look at amd64-generic in the latest tree as an example of integrating freon.  if you look at the git log for that repo, you should be able to easily find the commit that made the change.
