chrome.exe launches on Windows startup

Whenever I launch Win7, I find a chrome.exe process running in the
task manager. I have already disable the Google Chrome entry in
msconfig (where it has the --type=service flag), but it keeps re-
adding itself. Where and how can I prevent Chrome or Chromium from
launching at Windows startup?

Thank you for your reply.

Whenever you go into options, the service process will be started if it isn't already running so that it can be asked about it's settings. If you close the options page, and none of the things the service process is responsible for were enabled, it will exit when Chrome exits.  If you've enabled something that the service process is responsible for, like the Google Cloud Print connector (Options / Under the Hood, at the bottom), then the service process gets itself on the auto run list for when you log in, and will continue running when Chrome exits.

The service process will also re-add itself to the login launch list if you've enabled something it's responsible for and you then enter Chrome preferences. Because, hey, you asked it to do something, and it's just trying to do it's job.

If you opted in to Google Cloud Print, it makes it this service process always run.
Opt out and it should take care of it.

I would like step by step instruction on how to stop this crap from re-adding itself to my startup. I do not believe I opted for the Google cloud print connector and do not appreciate this browser tampering with my settings.

Do you have a Chrome Icon in your system tray?
Try right clicking the icon and deselecting "Let Google Chrome run in the background".

You may also want to check chrome://chrome/settings/
At the very bottom, in the section "Background Apps", uncheck "Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed"

These may be related to the process you are seeing.

Cheers

It is buried under "Show advanced settings...", in case you did not see it.
After clicking it, under "Google Cloud Print", if you have "Disconnect printers", click on it.
Also, make sure you unchecked the checkbox under "Background apps".

Please, keep the list as a CC recipient so others could benefit.

Also, you should post a new thread for that (with answers for the following questions ;)) -
What "auto-feature"?
In what cases is the browser going full screen? Clicking on something?

Any thought on preventing the browser from going full screen on me. I like to see my tabs and the auto-feature is a nuisance.

I have a similar situation. However, I have de-installed Google chrome. No app., no tray, But, now, at every start-up, a chrome process is initiated. I can delete the process via task manager. And, for this ession, it is not in initiated by anything else. But, I have no idea who or what is initiating this process at start-up. Could this be started by google drive ?

Any thoughts ?

What is the command line of that process (you can add this column to the task manager)?
Perhaps it is just malware. If not - as long as you uninstalled Chrome successfully (according to the uninstaller, anyway) and the official chrome.exe was not deleted - once you end that process, you can simply remove the Chrome folder from C:\Program Files\Google or C:\Program Files (x86)\Google (or %localappdata%\Google).

--type=service in my experience is Google Cloud Print; it keeps Chrome running as a service in the background because Cloud Print goes through Chrome to print to cloud-enabled printers.

You can disable Cloud Print in chrome://settings.

There may be other Chrome-based services, but this is the main one I'm aware of.

I am still having issues with this fake chrome.exe. I have uninstalled chrome and delete my folder from my Program files(x86). Am I missing a step in the process?? I could use a little help here getting rid of this.

I'm not having the same problem, but I am wondering if it is possible to still allow apps to run in the background, from when Chrome is first launched, but to not have them start at windows startup.
Anyone?

Wondering the same thing, I have a slow hard drive and Chrome DOUBLES the boot up time, it adds a minute from the time the desktop shows up to the time the PC is usable, but opening on demand after that only takes 10-20 secs, which is weird. Then I want it left in the background, since the RAM can handle it, but the HDD won't.

PS: It reenables itself on Windows 7, but on Windows 10 I disabled it and it never started again.

I have found that Google Cloud Print can no longer be disabled because an available printer "Save as PDF to Google Drive" will always be available. This virtual printer cannot be removed (chrome 43.0.2357.130). Seems like Chrome runs on startup to speed up PDF generation that most users won't need.

Simple enough really

win+r, or goto the start button and type "msconfig.exe" without quotes. It should just pop up when you start typing it if you run it through the start menu search. Once you run the program, click on the startup tab, and click "Chromium". It will ask for restart or exit, choose either. Once you restart, chromium should not execute next time on startup.

This works for other annoying startup programs you do not wish to slow your load up screen. It is recommended that if you really don't want to use the software, then uninstall it then.

a late post but for anyone just looking it up, if you have microsoft 360 security it monitors how fast your boot up time is. when you go in that to optomise
your speed, click manual. it will have a list of everything that runs on start up. you can turn off chromium there and it stays off on start up and will only run when you open an item that requires it.

This should be default. I've been chasing this down for months, too bad Chrome is such a memory hog. Thanks

I was having the same issue on a new install of Windows 10 Enterprise.

I was able to stop the launch at startup behavior by going into the Startup tab in Task Manager and disabling Chromium on startup.

If you have chrome.exe as a startup item (seen via msconfig or task manager's startup tab, depending on your Windows version) AND you have printers under chrome://devices/ that you have previously registered for Google Cloud Print, you can click the 'Disconnect printers' button.  Doing that solved my 'High impact' startup of chrome.exe on my Windows 10 system.

I had a similar issue, chrome.exe was launching by itself at startup and using 30% of my cpu. In my case it was malware (two trojans). The interesting thing is that Malwarebytes could not detect the malware as long as Chrome was installed on my computer. When I uninstalled Chrome, the malware then hijacked my other web browser Firefox which suddenly began launching by itself at startup. I therefore also had to uninstall Firefox, and only then did Malwarebytes detect the two trojans so I could finally remove them. I reinstalled Chrome and voila, the problem was solved.

Hi there,
I'm having this same issue since last week. Suddenly I realized that my cpu temp is getting higher then normal. I thought it could be happening cause of the summer, but I was wrong, yesterday I discovered there's chrome.exe is running in background at windows startup. Even I didn't allow it to run as startup. Since I found the chrome.exe is the thing that ussing my cpu around 25-30% and heating up my cpu, I'm deleting this process manually. My windows defender is upto date and didn't able to catch this malware or whatever it is. Plz let me know is there any way to get rid of this issue. :-(

Does it have the Google Chrome icon (colorful or yellowish circle), or the Chromium icon (blueish circle)?
For the former, I am not sure, but for the latter, it sounds like malware.

The Chromium binaries that the Chromium project makes available online (for testing only) do not update, install or launch automatically.
You are probably infected with some malware that use some customized Chromium binaries as one of its malicious mechanisms. :(
See this thread for at least removing that rogue Chromium -

I had the same problem with this Google Chrome startup, but I found the best solution. Just install AVG TuneUp (or similar software) and securely disable this startup. When you do this Google Chrome will only start when you run it and update when it is necessary. Choice is yours. :)
