Good Morning,
I am sure that most people have noticed a large increase in SPAM on this forum. At least one of the spam posts has not been removed after 3 days of it being posted. Can anything be done to prevent these?

Keith,

The spam filters are not perfect, but I'd recommend (at least for those using Gmail) to simply mark these emails as spam (if anyone is not sure how to: just press the down arrow to the right of the email and select "Report spam"). With enough votes, it should be taken care of before anyone else sees it and hopefully it will improve the filter in the future.

As for the last reply, I'd say this is recommended reading...

Looking at spam filters for chromium-dev it appears there are a number of similar messages in review that have not made it out to the list. Unfortunately, a number have and as Finnur points out clearly violate CoC.

Spam filters and deleting messages only helps with new topics. For a while now, we've had problems with spam messages coming as replies to existing threads (like the ones on this thread). These don't seem to get filtered out, at least using Inbox.

Thanks - in this case I personally received a response, but I believe it was held up by the spam filter for the group.

The spam messages are still cluttering digest emails as new threads. It seems deleting them after the fact doesn't help here, and local filtering obviously doesn't work if half the message is spam but half is an useful digest.

+community ...

Yes, unfortunately there's not much we can do about that (I think this is probably a limitation of Google Groups).

If the spam problem persists, I'm not sure if we'll have any real alternative besides moderating first posts from members. We can certainly do that, but at that point we'll probably want to recruit some experienced contributors as volunteers to be moderators, or have some people take it on instead of a sheriff rotation.

Does anyone strongly object to that idea?

I have been moderating chromium-discuss and google-chrome-developer-tools, I do not mind moderating chromium-dev as well.

Note - I have not been doing a great job in the past two weeks because I was a bit overloaded, but I generally approve them, during Israel business hours and days, within ten minutes to an hour (I created an extension that goes to the moderation page in a new non-active tab and checks if there are messages, stupid but works. I wish there was a Google API for fetching that list). That reminds me... I will moderate it now.

Moderating chromium-dev would (I suspect) increase the latency between question and answer which seems non-ideal. :(

Is that a strong objection, or just an observation :) ?

You are correct that that's the tradeoff, at least for first-posters. It's unclear how big a hurdle this is.

We tried moderating blink-dev@ for a couple months, prior to flipping it to match chromium-dev's settings. The delay was rarely an issue in practice.

Oh! I missed the "first post" caveat. Nevermind. Carry on.

At least one spammer took a real subject line from a thread from 2013, and use that to get first post approval.

Sure, I expect anything that allows people that existing members don't know to join can probably be abused.
