New issue 131863 by rzakar...@google.com: Chrome crashes when using Synergy
and copying from one computer to Chrome on Ubuntu
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=131863

Chrome Version : 20.0.1132.27
OS Version: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS the Lucid Lynx

I'm using Synergy to work with my mac laptop and ubuntu. Ubuntu is the
host. What I'm doing is coping urls from my mac and then pasting them into
address bar or any text area in gmail and chrome crashes. This is an
intermittent issue and only happens on Linux Chrome. I have not seen it on
Win7 or Mac. It seems that the issue happens because the clipboard doesn't
yet have the line that was copied and when I try to paste it into Chrome it
just hangs and there is no way to come out of it other than to force kill
it. So what I end up doing is pasting into gedit first and then into Chrome
and that works, gedit never crashes.
Let me know if there is anything else I could provide.

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if
possible.

ubuntu -> synergy -> ubuntu has the same issue... had it for a while , now
12.04.01 LTS

The process doesnt want to die either, needs a killall/kill -9 to get it to
die.

I am affected by this bug as well, and often have to kill chrome about 9-12
times a day.

win7 (synergy master) <--> ubuntu (synergy client).

My chrome doesn't crash on win7, only on ubuntu.

As a side note - I have found that if I restart the Synergy client when
having this issue, Chrome will come back to being responsive fairly quickly.

The workaround: firefox. :)

I've no idea what is wrong with Chrome on Ubuntu, but it is really broken
for me. On one machine (host) Chrome runs like a dog. On the client, it
locks up if I try and copy and paste.

Annoyingly, it is not all the time, but once it starts it gets stuck there.

I don't know, who is triaging Linux bugs.

@thestig: Can you triage this issue please (if possible) and take a look at
the crash reports?

Thanks in advance.

If you are having this problem, can you post some crash report IDs? The
ones from rzakarian don't seem related.

It's really hard to get crash IDs for this because the browser doesn't
really crash, it just freezes and nothing functions. However it did crash
on me just now when I was performing the same steps listed above, I got
this ID

Ya, those two crashes look the same. It looks like Chrome is hanging
waiting for data in the clipboard code:

I'm not sure if it can be easily fixed with the current iteration of
clipboard code. The GTK function in question runs a nested message loop
while it waits for the clipboard selection owner to respond... and if the
selection owners never responds, then we just hang.

I think lambroslambrou@ actually covered this case in his clipboard code
for Linux chromoting (which uses X11 instead of GTK), and erg@ is working
on converting the clipboard code in Chrome to use X11 as well, so maybe
this is something we can address in the future.

Actually, I wonder if this is related to
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=44915#c17 -- unfortunately, I
haven't found the associated patch to fix the issue there, but maybe we can
try a similar strategy in Chrome and see if it fixes the issue.

(If we do implement this, we probably want to keep the comments in
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=63991#c3 in mind as well)

The chromoting clipboard code is asynchronous - it triggers a registered
callback whenever it receives new clipboard data. In the case of an
unresponsive application that has claimed ownership of the clipboard, we
will simply fail to trigger the callback. So there's no need to spin up a
nested message-pump in our case.

There was a 5-second timer in an early iteration of our code (which
controlled whether to process a new clipboard notification or continue with
an existing process), but we removed it on closer review.

I can confirm that after restarting synergys (which I run on the same
Ubuntu machine running Chrome) is a way to recover without killing Chrome.
Chrome begins to respond after a few seconds.

That's not really a solution though. Restarting synergy is way more painful
imho than restarting Chrome which reopens with all of the tabs saved.

I run synergyc on my laptop, and synergys on my desktop. If I use my laptop

Hello,
I'm affected also by this bug since long time ago..
Gentoo+Synergys on one hand
Debian+Synergys+Chromium on the other hand.

It's really annoying and crap, as crap as your incapacity, head in the
wall, since the release of chrome to just follow the standard Unix
behaviour with 3rd button's click & paste right in the middle of a browser
page.
