Comment #1 on issue 156038 by zeroflag0: Chrome Hangs after Resume from
Trying to get more details for this issue. It seems chrome always hangs
(not just 50%) when resuming from sleep, BUT it's different on some sites.
E.g. google.com refreshes after about 10-20 seconds but opening a new tab
or using addons (Google Mail Checker to open mail.google.com) took more
than 100 seconds to even get started (after that it was very quick, about 3
seconds from opening the tab to finish loading).

I don't think it's related to addons though. I tried disabling all of them
before and it still froze.

One more note: Content heavy (loads of images, layout and even flash) seem
to cause longer freezes than light sites (like google).

It could be a timing issue between the browser and WIFI adapter, as I'm
having same problem too when resuming from hibernate/sleep, chrome doesn't
respond at all, and when the WIFI re-connects, chrome just hangs while
trying to refresh the pages again, browser doesn't even close properly
(have to go to processes and force chrome.exe's to close down. Then I have
to reboot laptop to get Chrome to work properly again.

System: Win 7 64bit, 21.0.1180.83 m, Intel i5 2430 m, 6GB RAM. ASUS k53s

On a side note, I haven't tried this with the "Open the new tab page"
and "Open a specific set of pages" at start up option. Also Chrome will
occasionally work when entering a new address into an existing tab after
hibernate but is slower than normal, and any new tabs created just hang.
Average chance of this happening is over 70%.

I've been having similar problems for several months now. Chrome generally
works for 1-2 hibernation cycles, but will always eventually stop working
(that is: new tabs/typed URLs don't load; links from currently open tabs
may or may not open; new windows generally don't launch in any appreciable
way). When this happens, Firefox and IE work fine and can be used to
connect to WiFi or LAN normally. If Chrome is completely closed, several
instances remain listed in Task Manager processes; if the one that uses the
most memory is ended, all of them tend to close down, but all that lets me
do is open another non-functional Chrome window. After reboot, Chrome
functions normally.

Version 22.0.1229.94 m, Win7 64bit.

zeroflag0@, I am NOT able to reproduce this issue with Chrome#23.0.1271.26
on my Win7 laptop and also tested on Latest Canary#24.0.1312.0 & Latest
Beta#23.0.1271.52.

Could you all please try with a chrome fresh installation, since it seems
to be specific to few machines as per **zeroflag0@** update(By deleting
*User Data* from your machine C:\Users\XXXXX\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome)
by removing any specific Extensions/Plugins.

Thanks in advance!!!

"I _think_ it's true that every time this happens I've moved to a new WIFI
network that requires logging in through a portal..."

Nope, just restarted at home and Chrome, which had been working when I went
into hibernation, is again nonfunctional. WIFI was definitely connected by
the time I tried to use Chrome. Links on tabs that were open through the
hibernation still work fine, but no new tabs or windows load anything.

I have the same problem, although I don't have to reboot my Win7 laptop.
If my computer goes to sleep, chrome tabs that I have will not be
responsive and new chrome tabs/windows won't work. I have close and reopen
Chrome, and when I reopen it it works. This is fine if I have only one
Chrome window open, because it will remember the tabs (does not give me the
crash screen).

Update: Switched of Hibernate and only using sleep for now, seems to have
solved the problem, also moved the location of the Chrome cache. When
booting from hibernate Win 7 takes a long time to reload saved data from
disk to memory, Recommend closing Chrome before hibernating and
have "Continue where I left off" enabled in start-up so that pages load
properly.

I have the same problem now for about 9 month. I tried out all the things
like completely removing chrome and personal data. I can definitly confirm,
that it has something to do with hibernation. Stand by works fine, but
after hibernation the symtoms are all the same as above with recent tabs
not loading new links and new tabs keep blank. After closing the window a
bunch of chrome instances remains in the Taskmanagers list. The only way to
get it running again is a reboot.

at least for last six months chrome hangs and then crashes on resume from
hibernate (win7 64) with 90% probability I would say. driver updates do not
fix it. and as neither firefox nor ie crashes with same sites open I'm
pretty sure it's not a "wifi driver" problem but rather chrome/google
coding issue.

Strange thing: before crash, chrome window moves to the left of screen
under task bar (I have set task bar to vertical on left side of screen) and
then crashes.

Hi!
I just found this bugthread while searching for a solution as I've got this
problem since a week. I'm also using
version 26.0.1410.64 m
on a Windows 7 x64 - box and using hibernate for letting my computer
sleep :-).

I've never had this problems before a reboot last week and the autoupdate
to this version! The reboot was caused by a bunch of windows updates also
being installed last week. So one of the installed fixes / updates seems to
cause this very ugly behaviour.

Ditto.. just upgraded to Chrome Version 26.0.1410.64 m a week or so ago
during an automatic update after a reboot 7 days and 17 hours ago.. ever
since then, every time I suspend and resume in a different location
(haven't tried the same location), Chrome needs to be closed completely and
restarted before it will start loading pages again. I ran procmon.exe and
filtered by chrome.exe.. I don't see anything glaring out at me... when I
reload a page, it will try to do a reg read on
HKCU\Software\Google\Update\ClientState\{8A69D345-D564-463c-AFF1-A69D9E530F96}\brand
and say NAME NOT FOUND.. meanwhile the chrome tab will reload all black..

I'm running on Windows 8, 64bit, for the record.. don't think there is a
32-bit, but whatever.. ;)

It seems - I will have to get a longer uptime to confirm that - that either
a new Microsoft-Patch yesterday or the actual Adobe Flash Update seems to
fix these freeze problems at least here.
The feeling within Chrome at all is now as it was before - still being on
Version 26.0.1410.64 m.

I must confess, that neither any new nvidia nor any windows update did
definately fix this problem. Moreover, I just discovered that there are
some applications like "DVB Dream" that hang also a little bit on closing a
window. Therefore, it must be somehow a system library or some
microsoft-internal library used by all of the problematic software tools!?!
I also had another business app using - afaik - some .net libraries for it
to work. Maybe it's worthwhile to match the common files used by all of
these "problematic" apps?

@#28 : Yeah, I'm beginning to think that this is not a general problem of
Chrome. I've now seen other tools hanging too on close (as already
mentioned).
I'm also using the newest nvidia drivers on my 8600 GTS. I had an update to
the newest nvidia drivers also around the time of updating to Chrome
26.0.1410.64 m - since this combination, all problems started...

Is anyone from the Chrome-Devs here to help on this? Looks more or less
like a "nice" chatting here....

Steps to reproduce:
Have Chrome window open to website
Put computer into Hibernate
Place computer on docking station
Power on laptop
Note that Chrome window still appears, can be dragged around, new tabs can
open.

Internal content of tab is all blank. Opening new tab and typing in

message only a blank area.

Also have Dell Latitude (E6520, previous 15" model) with the issue rodney.d
and jedi.net and others have!

- Chrome Version # 27.2.1453.110 m (Chrome says it is up to date)

- NVIDIA DVS 4200M Graphics, Driver 8.17.12.9679 (Driver Date 5/12/2012)
- I'm concerned with installing the latest driver from NVIDIA site. I may
call Dell for advice on trying a later version than support.dell.com
recommends for my machine.

- This Chrome Window black-out just started 2 days ago (~6/7/13) after I
installed the latest NVIDIA graphics driver I regrettably updated to (from
support.dell.com site's diagnostic/downloader, along with the
Mouse/Track-pad driver, Network Driver, Audio Driver). Also, Dell did a on
site replacement of my LCD and mother board due to their failure (1.5yr old
machine).

With my personal laptop that has an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 540v, Chrome
started hanging recently when resuming from standby. The system hasn't had
anything else changed, just Chrome auto-updated. Clearly a Chrome issue and
not an OS/ driver one.

chrome works fine on a fresh restart of windows 7...then after i close
chrome, i put the windows 7 in hibernation. then if i resume the pc from
hibernation and open chrome again, chrome wont load any pages, not even the
new tab page, keeps showing "loading" as the tab name. clicking on the icon
of any extension produces no response, but clicking on the chrome menu
displays the menu. yet i cant open the menu items, eg. settings, extensions
etc. now even if i exit chrome using chrome menu -> exit or close button,
two chrome processes continue to run forever in the windows taskmanager
unless i end those processes manually. now if i restart (warm boot or cold
boot) my windows 7, and start chrome, it works fine. i updated all
extensions and chrome itself but in vain.

This issue has been marked as WontFix.

The common resolution is to update your video card drivers. If that
doesn't work also update your motherboard BIOS.

Comment #60 on issue 156038 by fraser.m...@gmail.com: Chrome Hangs after
I currently see a new behavior. After resuming from sleep on a laptop with
two cards, each chrome page shows initially as black, but after a few
seconds (3 to about 8 seconds) the tab gets recreated and starts appearing.
I've been updating nVidia drivers with the Nvidia GeForce Experience tool
which came with the drivers I updated (which I keep running on the tray
icon).

I don't think this issue should be maked as WontFix. Either this is the
accepted fix (the current behaviour) which seems not to be a very good one,
or It should be given renewed attention as the card changing technology on
laptops me around for a while.

It not depends on count of tabs. Seems like some other programs hangs too.

Same issue. I have been experiencing this at least a year. I have
uninstalled/reinstalled, updated drivers, etc. Nearly every time I put the
computer to sleep from work, and resume when i get home (and vice versa)
Chrome freezes and goes gray (Chrome Not Responding). I have been
complaining of this for a year, and see that Chrome is being updated from
time to time too...but still exists.

This may be related to how Chrome responds to network disconnect/reconnect.
Not only my chrome slow to reconnect after my laptop awakes from sleep (30
seconds or more. I tried to open new page or refresh existing page AFTER OS
has established network), it also shows same problem when I switch from
normal connection to VPN, or from VPN to normal connection.

Brady, when you sleep and resume, are you doing it on the same network? I
think our problems are reproducable based upon both changing networks
between sleep/resume, and certain websites that may be more complicated
than others. I personally fail EVERY time when Salesforce is open.

Comment #69 on issue 156038 by simeon.pilgrim: Chrome Hangs after Resume
I would like to add to this issue, Chrome also stops working for me after
sleep/resume with a network change (home -> work or work -> home)
Winows 7 Enterprise SP 1, Chrome 39.0.2171.71 m

This has been occurring for over a year.
I have four extensions installed:
Hangouts 2014.1112.433.1 ID: knipolnnllmklapflnccelgolnpehhpl
Hangouts 2014.910.433.1 ID: nckgahadagoaajjgafhacjanaoiihapd
No Smooth Scrolling 1.1 ID: oikddacoldignalphkgeppnpalkmkgbo
Search by Image (by Google) 1.5.1 ID: dajedkncpodkggklbegccjpmnglmnflm

the chrome visible windows disappear, and only the tab on my taskbar is
present, and the only action is responds to is close, and then Windows says
the apps not responding, and I can kill it. Today, my system has been
running for 30+ minutes at work, and it's not recovered, so time seems to
not be an issue. After killing/restarting everything is happy. During
the "locked-up" time, hangouts also is locked up (no surprises there)

I use Wi-Fi at home and LAN via dock at work, and having the Wi-Fi off when
the laptop is plugged in doesn't seem to avoid it locking up. I have duel
monitors at work, and at home just use the laptop screen.

Its only the fact that chrome remembers my open tabs on crash recovery that
have stopped me moving away, but it's super annoying.

I have problems with start after hibernate about 90% of the time. With my
new laptop, I have had these problems since day one. It's been maybe eight
months or so but i havent gotten around to reporting it. Basically, it's
enough to have a webpage open that has some average content load (not
google start page alone but basically anything else will make it freeze). I
have to kill from either task manager or from "close window" on task bar -
the close button up to the right will not do.

I only use this laptop at home so no changing networks like other users
report.

One a user note, I do hibernation so often that I have reverted to other
browsers awaiting an eventual fix, it has become annoying enough. I have
two other older laptops where hibernation with chrome works excellent,
though they are running respectively windows 7 x86 and lubuntu x86.

I have been facing this issue as well ever since i stated using chrome many
years ago.
steps
1) Have multiple tabs opened in multiple windows.
2) go to standby/hibernation
3) come out of standby/hibernation
do either of a) click/focus on any existing chrome window b) open a new
tab c) open a new window
4) all three cases in step 3 causes chrome to hang. only way out is to kill
it from Windows Task Manager

Current configurations in use:
Chrome version: 40.0.2214.93 (Official Build) m
OS: Windows 7 Enterprise with SP1 (64 bit)
Hardware: 64 bit Lenovo W530
Intel core i7 @ 2.7 GHz, 8 GB RAM
nVidia Quadro K1000M graphics card

This problem is persistent version after version...
removing different plugins and extensions (like flash) also did not help.
also tried starting chrome with different commandline options... this too
did not change the symptoms.

Same issue. Looks like this issue dates back to 2012. It was bad enough
that I ended up switching to Firefox, but then Firefox started dumping
sponsored links on their new tab page and buttons for their Telephonica
affiliate in the toolbar. So, now I'm back, but it looks like this issue
still is around. I'm running Windows 7 on an HP dm4 Laptop. Nothing special
here. Seems to be a cross-platform issue (both Mac and Windows). I've
checked and the recovery time is *exactly* 30 seconds.

My issue has gone for a few months now since I last reported it - not sure
what remedied it. The only major chnage I did was to flush my router with
DD-WRT firmware, which also greatly improved the wifi re-connect time when
laptop comes out of sleep/hibernate (from at least 30 seconds to a few
seconds). Thought this info might be useful for someone.

text in a text box make the hard drive read and write a lot ! I´m on Chrome
Versión 44.0.2403.39 beta-m (64-bit) right now, but also happend in 32 bit

opened webpage on Chrome, do that Windows swap all memory to hard disk at
hibernate state, and after a wake up, not all threads are refilled to
memory, so many if them remain in swap file memory, and changes between
tabs on Chrome, force the OS to reload from swapfile. The same issue does
not exist on IE, Firefox or even Opera with the same opened web sites, but
