Hello, sorry I bet this has been asked a lot- but I didn't see any obvious info- I have a chrome extension that has about 800 users from the web store, and about 13000 from chromeextensions.org (I put it there before the web store existed).

It's a very simple extension in that it just executes a bit of javascript on document ready, and reformats certain elements if it finds them.

Is there some way for me to make money from this?  I don't necessarily want to charge users, but if they want to donate then that would be great.  Or is there something I should be doing with adsense?  I'm a total n00b when it comes to this.

Why would you not put the donate link if you think that your users are willing to donate?
(they not, by the way, but who knows...)

I could- I just wanted to know if there was some other way.  For example, you can associate a google analytics id with your extension- why?  As far as I was able to see you need to dump a bit of javascript in your web pages to use analytics.  What is that there for then in regards to extensions?

And because you can link your analytics account and your adsense accounts I was thinking there might be some way for the extensions themselves to generate revenue based on use.

There's a lot of questions around this (for me anyways).  If the answer is simply, 'You can't make money off an extension' that't okay, I just want to make sure I'm not missing something.

There exist some sort of black market for such things - you sell your users, they will pay from 0.5 - 2 $ per user.
And then will annoy them by advertising till the extension will not be uninstalled.

I will not give any contacts of course...

Not sure about adsense, i think it is prohibited for extensions, but you can use some other advertising services. Also Google documentation explicitly state that it is okay to charge for an extension, using the payment services.

you can associate a google analytics id with your extension- why?

You will be able to use analytics to analize the visitors of your Chrome Web Store page - very handy.

As far as i see, most such black hat (a hint) advertisers then try to persuade you users to install some sort of crapware, which will integrate self with the system. Some download manager, or something like this (a "free" programs). You can actually do this directly if it is ok for your conscience - all publishers of this crap have an affiliate programs and will pay you for every install.

But i think that charging users directly for some additional service or functionality, of course if you extension allow such things, will give you (and your users) much more.

But unlikely this is your route if you only now start to think about this.

Yeah I'm very very against the crapware and such stuff.  I much prefer to have written a nice free extension that helps some people out and not get anything ever rather than go that route.  If there was a legal and unobtrusive way to make a bit of money I would maybe check into it but it seems to not be worth it.

Respect.

By the way, do you prefer to write nice free extension more than nice commercial one (in which user must pay to activate all the functionality or to buy a license to use it beyond some free trial period)?
And why, if so?

Second route potentially might allow you to do your nice work longer and with a more commitment (read - quality), don't you think so?

Interesting question- I prefer the first route I suppose.  I already have a full time job, and I nerd out on extensions for fun.  If I was to charge people for it I would want to make sure it is really well supported, which takes more time.  Exactly that quality thing you mention.  As it is, I check in on it every once in a while to see if there are any bug reports but that's about it.

Also, it's a super simple extension- it only took me a few hours to write and updates just take a bit of time here and there.  I don't feel right charging money for that somehow.  And quality seems to not be a huge problem- because of it's simplicity it just does it's little job and there's not much that can go wrong.

A lot has changed in the Chrome web store ecosystem in the last couple months which may have affected your ability to effectively monetize your extension. If you’re looking for new, Chrome-compliant ways to make more from your extensions and apps, check out the FairShare monetization platform. With FairShare you can connect your extensions and apps with hundreds of premium advertisers and show relevant ads that integrate seamlessly into your users’ browsing experience.

You can check out the overview and how it works on our website but in a nutshell:

  1. You drive users to co-install the single-purpose advertising Fairshare extension

  2. You’ll earn revenue based on the advertisements the user sees and engages with

You can motivate users to install Fairshare based on goodwill, or you incent them by content-locking some of your premium content or features so that they can only be accessed by users that have Fairshare installed.

Check it out and let me know what you think!  We’re looking for feedback on how we can make our offerings better for users and developers / publishers

Best,
Elvie

The Chrome Web Store has started supporting extension monetization since March 2014. Here is the blog post:

You can either make it require an up-front payment, or use in app purchases. They payment support is integrated with the webstore and is easy to use.

Never inject adware to extensions and get banned within few days and also it is against T&C.  Extensions are meant to extend browsers functionalities, but not make money injecting ads.  Instead, use their in-app payment services and get paid by offering value added services!

You can also monetize your Chrome extension with ExtensionPay! It allows you to take payments directly in your extension without needing to run a backend server. It's free to sign up, you get paid directly through Stripe, and its JS library is open source and works cross-browser so you can release your extension for all browsers.

I developed a browser extension called Circle Reading Assistant, which can extract the content of the webpage and rearrange the layout into a more suitable interface for reading. as follows:

default.png

There are three main profit models for this expansion:
  1. One is user donation, of course, the income is also pitiful
  2. One is to hang Google ads on the official website, the income is not as good as donations
  3. One is to include paid functions, the basic functions are free, and the advanced functions need to be paid for.
The new version has just launched advanced features, and the payment is okay. If you are interested, you can visit here for details: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/circle-reading-assistant/dhpfcgilccfkodnhbllpiaabofjbjcbg?hl=zh-CN&authuser=0

There are 6,000 users in the chrome extension market, 8,000 users in the Edge extension market, and a total of 30,000 users in other browsers
