Hello Chromium committers,

Here is an update regarding our migration plan milestones, timeline, and one new tool we can leverage to ease migration efforts:

DIR_METADATA files will be created to store the same metadata information present in OWNERS files. Tools  that depend on OWNERS COMPONENT, TEAM and OS information within OWNERS files need to be updated, so they can fetch this data from DIR_METADATA files instead. A new tool (dirmd) has already been provided  which provides dual-read and parsing capabilities, so that tool owners can leverage this tool to simplify migration efforts. Along with DIR_METADATA files creation, we will be removing metadata from OWNERS files, a new PRESUBMIT check will be added to validate the contents of the new DIR_METADATA files, also OWNERS files owners will be cc in our CLs to review and raise concerns if any.

Schedule is as follows:

  • 7/24/2020 - Tools that extracted metadata from OWNERS files have been migrated to DIR_METADATA files.

  • 7/31/2020 - Chrome Operations to add DIR_METADATA files with migrated data, and to remove metadata from OWNERS files.

For more detailed information please keep referring to the Migration rollout document which is up to date.

Thank you,

Edward Lesmes and Norman Rosas on behalf of the Chrome Operations team.

TL;DR: Last milestone of the DIR_METADATA files migration postponed to 8/10 due to Chromium CQ production freeze.

Hello Chromium committers,

There is only one milestone pending to complete the migration to DIR_METADATA files. However, we are postponing this milestone as noted below,  due to the Chromium CQ Production Freeze (July 28th to August 3rd) announced (separately) earlier this week.

  • Previous ETA: 7/31/2020 New ETA: 8/10/2020- Chrome Operations to add DIR_METADATA files with migrated data, and to remove metadata from OWNERS files.

We will keep you posted if anything else changes. Finally, thanks to all the tools owners that migrated their tools to support both OWNERS files (temporarily) and DIR_METADATA files; hence completing our previous milestone.

For more detailed information please keep referring to the Migration rollout document which is up to date.

Thank you,

Edward Lesmes and Norman Rosas on behalf of the Chrome Operations team.
