Hi All,

It seems that the patents related to mp3 encoding/decoding have expired and Red Hat, for example, has already green-lighted the shipping of mp3 support in Fedora [1]. Can we enable mp3 support by default in Chromium as well? If Google legal isn't already looking into this can someone poke them about it?

Thanks,
Marshall

I'll double check that we can, and get back to this thread. If do confirm it, then patches welcome :)

Hi Marshall,

Thanks for reaching out/ following-up.  Downstream developers are free to enable support, in their build configurations, at this time we have no plans to make it the default.

Regards,

Anthony

Sorry I didn't see this thread earlier. To provide a bit more color, even though we have no plans at this time, I have reached out to our lawyers about this (some time ago in fact). We do actively want to reduce the number of things that require special flags to enable for reasons of testability and maintainability.

And as luck would have it, the lawyers had forgotten to send their update, so now I have an update to share: We'll be enabling mp3 in M62 for Chromium builds. Hope this helps!
