Our extension turned into an app by itself, so now we can't update it

We have an extension - ecnphlgnajanjnkcmbpancdjoidceilk - which has had some weird behavior over the last few days. We can't update it, since we get an error message 'Apps may not contain a browser action.'  This doesn't make any sense, since it's an extension, not an app.

The listing at https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/notable-docs-%E2%80%93-pdf-viewer/ecnphlgnajanjnkcmbpancdjoidceilk?hl=en-US&utm_source=chrome-ntp-launcher has changed into an App - although if you download it now, you actually get the extension -  and the reviews all disappeared at the same time (but the ratings have been kept).

This is our manifest here: http://pastebin.com/NHyNLzXG - as you can see, there is no 'app' section. The extension has been published with that manifest for the past few weeks, and has always been an extension.

It seems to me that this has been caused by some change on the Chrome Web Store, seeing as all this happened without us actually releasing an update.

Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas on how we can get the web store to change our listing back to being an extension?

Hi Jordan-

I asked the webstore team about this, and it turns out you have a non-standard key in your manifest and are running into a bug on their end. Apparently the one which is causing this bug is:

"container" : "GOOGLE_DRIVE",

Apparently if you remove that it should workaround the problem, and they'll work to fix the bug in the mean time.

BTW, did you get that field by copy/pasting from the google drive app? Two other potentially nonstandard keys I noticed are "api_console_project_id" and "gdrive_mime_types". Again, I'm curious if this was just copy/pasting or you explicitly added these for some reason?

Hi Antony

Thanks - I added those lines in order to add Google drive integration (so when you install the extension you get the Google drive integration also), following the instructions here: https://developers.google.com/drive/web/listing . I guess that's mostly for apps but it's not explicit about that, and when I added it the integration and badge worked, up till a few days ago.

I'll try removing that part of the manifest and see if it solves the issue. Ideally we'd be able to keep those lines in the extension once the bug is fixed, so then our extension users don't need to install another separate app to get the integration.

Thanks
Jordan

Hi Antony

Unfortunately removing those lines still doesn't let me update - When I upload the new zip file, I get an error - "An error occurred: Failed to process your item. This item is an app, please specify app section in manifest".
Is there a way I can fix that?

Thanks
Jordan

Any updates on this? We're still unable to update our extension, been almost two weeks now.

Cheers
Jordan

Oops, sorry about that. The webstore folks are continuing to look into this.

WRT the manifest fields, unfortunately our organization boundaries are showing up here - those of us working on the browser client software hadn't really been aware of what the drive apps folks were doing. I pinged some people from the relevant teams and hopefully we can get things straightened out soon.

I heard back from the webstore team that they have a fix working it's way through their release process, which will likely be live by Monday. Unfortunately until that point your item will remain stuck, I think unless you actually want to turn it into an app instead of an extension.

So maybe before Monday, they can manually fix it for my extension?

Webpage Screenshot is one of the first extensions of Google Chrome.
We are the extension developers, makes Google Chrome what it is today.

Please do not leave me in times of trouble

Just change the manifest,json,
This is one minute of work, and will have effect on hundreds of thousands of users

Extension id: ckibcdccnfeookdmbahgiakhnjcddpki

1) Remove this keys:
"container":
"api_console_project_id":
"intents":

2) Add "activeTab" to permission.

That's all.

Hi Antony

Is the fix ready to go on Monday? Being unable to update is causing us some major issues as our users are having problems we are unable to fix until we can release an update.

Thanks
Jordan

It's now turned back into an extension again and we are able to update. Thanks for your help!
