we're running into GH size limits with our mirror at:

before we take drastic measures, I'm wondering if we can drop branches we aren't using. specifically, does anyone care about the refs/branch-heads/? they aren't visible in the GH UI, so I wonder how many people actually care about them.

do people care about tags? maybe keep tags from releases over the last year or so?

I believe some Chromium embedder projects watch release tags on the Github mirror. They might have an opinion on dropping older tags. +embedder-dev@ for that.

+ some other folks that have noticed the github mirror being frozen.

I am interested in the tags on GitHub for my tools, which are currently broken due to the lack of tag updates.

+1, I noticed the mirror has been stuck lately.

For my use cases, https://chrome-commit-tracker.arthursonzogni.com/ depends exclusively on the GitHub mirror's main branch. Dropping other branches and tags SGTM.

The Chromium C++ codebase grows by roughly 10% per year. If we're hitting a hard repository size limit rather than a branch/tag limit, dropping branches is just buying us a little time before we reach the same threshold again.
Ultimately, the GitHub mirror is valuable because it lets us use the GitHub API, avoiding fetching the repository. If we can't get the mirror working again in the future, I have some possible workarounds to avoid depending on Github.

We use the github mirror for some of our CI checks - we mostly use tags for this, and we don't need anything older than a few months back. We don't use refs/branch-heads outside of the official Chromium repo.
