I don't know if this is a bug or if it is the intended behavior or not, but when an input has placeholder text on an iOS device it shows up as "UNKNOWN_TYPE". For example:

<input type="search" class="search-field" name="CDSearchText" placeholder="Quick Calendar Search" style="background-image: url('/images/search.png');">

I'm happy to file a bug but before I waste anyone's time can someone tell me if this is actually what is meant to happen for some reason?

I am guessing you did not enable anything on chrome://flags (assuming it is even supported on iOS).
If this is the case, it looks like a bug.
You can search crbug.com for an existing issue and star it. If you cannot find one, file a new issue using the "New issue" link on the same page.
Please, do not add a "+1" or "Me too" or "Confirmed" (or similar) comment. It just wastes the time of Chrome engineers and sends unnecessary e-mails to all of the people who starred the issue.

You can reply with a link to the found or created issue and might get triaged (and fixed) faster.

Thank you.

I don't see anything similar in  crbug.com

I don't recall changing any chrome://flags but it isn't impossible. Any clues about which one might be relevant?
