Spec

https://github.com/WICG/media-capabilities/blob/master/eme-extension-policy-check.md

Summary

Provide applications the ability to query whether a specific policy, e.g. HDCP requirement, can be enforced before requesting licenses.

Goals for experimentation

Validate that the API provides sufficient functionality for content providers using it to deliver an improved user experience (example signals: higher resolution right at the beginning of the playback). This will be measured by content providers that join the origin trial and choose to share their internally measured results and feedback.

Experimental timeline

The experiment will be enabled on Chrome 66 and 67 on Dev/Beta/Stable channels.

  • Dev: 03/01/2018 (M66 Branch Point) - 05/24/2018 (M68 Branch Point)

  • Stable*: 04/17/2018 (M66 Stable) - 07/24/2018 (M68 Stable)

* Stable dates are estimates: https://www.chromium.org/developers/calendar.

Any risks when the experiment finishes?

No significant risks - content providers can fall back to their current behavior when we disable the origin trial.

Ongoing technical constraints

None

Will this feature be supported on all five Blink platforms supported by Origin Trials (Windows, Mac, Linux, Chrome OS, and Android)?

No. This feature will not be supported on Android and Android WebView. This is because we use MediaDrm API on Android where currently there is no way to check policy.
