Dear Board Members and Dr. Trice,

Whichever school is selected for closure, families will need support in talking with their children about what this means.

This is a difficult message: their school will close, but not immediately. Students will remain at their current school for 2026–27 and transition to a new school in 2027–28. In the meantime, many will not know where they will go, whether they will attend with friends, or what the transition will look like.

Children should hear this news from their caregivers first, not from classmates or as something overheard on the bus. I hope the district will quickly provide parents with simple, age-appropriate guidance for discussing the decision. I also ask that the district allow excused absences for any child at the selected school on the school day following the vote.

I hope the district will also share a clear support plan for affected students, families, teachers, and staff, including when more information about redistricting, transportation, and services and supports will be available.

This decision will be painful for whichever school is selected. Clear communication and support will help demonstrate care and respect for the affected community.

Thank you,

A. Boxer
