Dear Colleagues:
As many of you know, Chandra has undergone several re-budgeting episodes in the past year, including the Operations Paradigm Change Review (OPCR) held in May of this year. These have resulted in funding reductions that have impacted the community, and in potential threats to the continuation of the Chandra Mission. Following the OPCR review, funding was restored to continue operating Chandra in FY25, at reduced levels.
At present, Chandra is preparing for NASA's 2025 Senior Review of operating missions, for which the mission has been directed to address budget guidelines that represent a reduction of >60% for FY2026 and beyond, which would require decommissioning the observatory. The CXC is working on a proposal with requests beyond these guidelines that would preserve the unique capabilities of the observatory, and the support to the community of Chandra users. The CXC is announcing a virtual Town Hall to summarize the current status of the observatory and its funding, and to brief the community on the approach to the Senior Review.
